Chapter 33 - The Blood Guard — Provocation and Clash

"Man, what were you even thinking?"The one speaking was Josh. During Whistler's disappearance, he had taken over Whistler's job—modifying all kinds of weapons for Blade so they could effectively kill vampires.

Josh was never a proper, upstanding citizen. He used to be a street thug, known for illegally modifying cars and running away fast whenever things went south. The reason he became Blade's assistant was simple—his "talents" were useful for cops, maybe, but utterly useless against vampires. And when he ended up as prey for the bloodsuckers, he ran into Blade—turning the hunters into the hunted.

Maybe Blade's mission felt cool to him, so he volunteered to join. Not too long, not too short—exactly two years. Until Whistler was rescued by Blade.

"Sounds like a good idea," Blade said casually, his attention still fixed on the gear in his hands.

"And what's your real opinion?"Whistler limped forward, frowning. "These guys aren't exactly known for keeping their word."

Blade put down his equipment and slipped on his gloves before giving his honest view.

"Given the chance, they'll bite us. Hard. As in: tear us to pieces."

Josh had been smoking, but after hearing Blade's words, he immediately flicked the cigarette away and rushed over."So that means we're not taking this deal, right?"

The guy had a strange habit—he always touched his lower lip with his finger when he talked.

"We'll play along for now. Use the opportunity to get inside their organization, figure out what they're really up to. Once this whole thing is over, I'll take care of them myself."Blade spoke, revealing a slight flash of fangs.

"That's what I love about you, man!" Josh became excited and punched Blade in the chest. "Just imagine my babies ripping through these freaks—it's gonna be awesome!"

"I know enough about these bastards already."Whistler leaned on the railing as he limped downstairs. "Right now, they're probably scared out of their minds. Losing their spot at the top of the food chain must piss them off real bad."

Seeing Whistler's odd behavior, Josh covered his mouth, whispering to Blade:"Seriously, man… I'm worried about him. I know you two are close, but you need to keep an eye on him. Nobody recovers from being turned and turned back in one night."

Having said his piece, Josh walked off, feeling he'd given the perfect warning.

Two years ago, Whistler had been captured by vampires. As an old-school vampire hunter and Blade's mentor, they hated him fiercely. They tortured him not only physically, but deep into his mind.

And the best way to break someone like that?Turn him into the very monster he had hunted his entire life.

They turned Whistler, froze him, and kept him preserved until Blade found and rescued him, injecting him with the cure. But none of them knew whether the cure would fully take. Even if Whistler could still walk in the sunlight… nothing was certain.

"That man was right. They're not at the top of the food chain anymore."Descending silently from above, Zhou Yi landed inside the factory and spoke to Blade.

Blade wasn't surprised to see the Daybreaker arrive. A man who could fly could go anywhere—especially in a drafty factory like this. So he asked plainly:"Well? Any leads?"

"Yes." Zhou Yi replied firmly. "They're expanding fast—and they're deliberately avoiding our searches. Only attack traces left behind, nothing else. Tell me, how exactly are our vampire allies planning to locate these things?"

"Maybe they've got some secret recipe for catching rats."Blade told a joke with a cold expression, but neither of them laughed. The mutated vampire threat hung heavy over both their minds.

They had no idea how far the mutations had spread, and no clue what the Vampire Empire was plotting. One misstep, and human society could face catastrophic consequences. That was something neither of them wanted to see.

Time passed quickly. The last ray of sunlight vanished, and night covered the land. And the creatures of the dark began to move.

Zhou Yi stood silently on a high platform, waiting for the vampires to arrive. He was connected to the NYPD surveillance network, hoping to catch some trace of the mutated bloodsuckers through their cameras.

Blade had already retreated to his room—he needed to suppress the bloodthirst. As a Daywalker, he still carried the nature of a vampire, especially the craving for blood. Every single day, he fought against it. Sometimes through sheer willpower, but often through medication.

Bloodlust was a horrifying disease. Even hardened warriors with iron wills struggled against the madness it caused. Once it took over, they would become monsters. Blade had endured for so long—and he would continue to endure.

The vampire princess Nissa entered Blade's base with a group of strange figures. Odd as it was, this time they truly came as allies.

Stepping into the factory, Nissa immediately spotted Zhou Yi—but she ignored him and instead addressed Blade's assistants.

"I have brought the Blood Guard as promised. Where is the Daywalker?"Vampires preferred calling Blade "the Daywalker"—they saw him as one of their kind, even if he hunted them relentlessly.

Whistler merely fiddled with his welding tool as if he never heard her.Josh, cigarette hanging from his mouth, grinned wickedly.

"Lady, if you're looking for that guy, you should try the office upstairs. Name's—"

Nissa walked past him without even acknowledging his existence. Behind her, the Blood Guard chuckled mockingly.

"You're welcome!" Josh called out with a shrug, unfazed by their ridicule.

Soon, Nissa returned—with Blade now fully composed, following her.

"Allow me to introduce our Blood Guard."She began pointing them out one by one.

First was a shirtless, tattooed, axe-wielding bald brute with a massive physique—and a red-haired female vampire clinging affectionately to his back.

"Lighthammer. Verlaine…"At that moment, both lovers simultaneously raised their heads and flashed their fangs at Blade. Clearly, the pair worked as one.

Next, Nissa gestured toward a well-dressed vampire with long, flowing hair.

"This is Priest."He placed a hand to his chest and bowed gracefully like a true gentleman.

"Snowman!"An icy-faced, Asian vampire unsheathed and resheathed his katana in a blur of steel, then bowed like a samurai.

At last, she pointed toward a burly, Western-farming-looking vampire in half chain armor and the bald man beside him.

"Chupa. And the captain of the Guard: Reinhardt."

Hearing his name, Reinhardt strode forward arrogantly, chin lifted, nostrils flared.

He sized up Blade and said with disdain:"Hey, all of us—" he pointed behind him"—we're kinda wondering…"

He covered his mouth dramatically, as if asking about Blade's unspeakable flaws.

"Oh? Wondering what?" Blade tilted his head, listening.

"Whether you can even blush."Reinhardt leaned in, spelling it out word by word into Blade's ear.

A roar of laughter erupted from the Blood Guard.

It wasn't about Blade's skin color. Vampires judged by bloodline, not color. Otherwise, Asad wouldn't be the steward to the Vampire Lord—one of the highest positions in their empire.

The real meaning was:Does the guy who hunts us for a living deserve to lead us?

Blade smiled. He exchanged an imperceptible glance with Zhou Yi.Then he walked casually to Reinhardt's side.

"I get your point."

And suddenly—Blade struck.

He drove a fist deep into Reinhardt's gut, forcing the big vampire to double over.

Then Blade swung a brutal roundhouse kick toward his head. A blow strong enough to rip apart a pureblood's face.

But Reinhardt was elite. Dropping to one knee, he forced his body upright, letting Blade's kick pass just inches from his face.

Blade didn't pause—he spun, delivering another whip kick.

This time Reinhardt was ready. He crossed his arms, tanked the blow—bones cracking—and used the impact to spring into the air, driving a vicious knee toward Blade.

In such a short instant, he had taken an injury, reversed the momentum, and launched a counterattack.

The strength of the Blood Guard was clear.

But Blade was still Blade—the most aberrant mutation among vampires.Faster, stronger, and more powerful than any of them.

Using only his hands to stop a flying knee—normally impossible.Unless the power gap was that vast.

Which, right now… it was.
