Chapter 116 - Father-Son Conflict, Memory Mirror

Blackbird slowly descended into the forest near Lake Erica. They weren't sure how many sentry posts and spies Stryker had set up here. For safety, they chose the most cautious approach, concealing the Blackbird within the forest.

The dense trees were enough to hide the Blackbird's not-so-large frame, and the mutants' senses, far exceeding those of humans, allowed them to avoid most human eyes and ears. Of course, if some unlucky fellow accidentally stumbled in here, these mutant elites wouldn't mind letting him enjoy the wilderness for a couple of days.

Looking towards the towering Lake Erica dam through the layers of trees, someone asked.

"Do you think that base is really inside the dam? I can't see anything at all."

Magneto closed his eyes slightly, and after a moment, he opened them and said.

"There is indeed a huge base under the dam, but I can't sense anything inside. Neither metal nor bio-magnetic fields. It seems Stryker has made ample preparations, even shielding my magnetic field sensing."

"So how do we get in? Are we just going to march up and knock on the door?" Quicksilver asked what was on many people's minds. Ever since they heard that Professor Charles Xavier might be on their enemy's side, courage had begun to gradually drain from them. This was almost unavoidable.

Magneto naturally understood this too, but he didn't have any better solutions for the situation. Because even he himself was worried about Charles's situation. Although he had ways to shield himself from Charles's mental interference, the mutant elites around him didn't have this ability.

And once Professor Charles Xavier was controlled by Stryker, the elite mutants around him would turn their spears towards him in an instant. So, no matter what, he had to make a quick decision. The longer they delayed, the closer the predicted disaster would get.

"We don't have much time to waste. Maybe just a minute slower, and it could drag us into the abyss. The mutants can't withstand such a storm. Let's attack directly and solve this as quickly as possible."

Almost without hesitation, Magneto voiced his thoughts. In his mind, there was almost no mention of casualties. Perhaps in his eyes, so-called casualties were just an acceptable part of the price.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa. Are you thinking of just charging in like that? That's a military base, and we don't even know where the entrance is. Isn't that a bit reckless?"

Quicksilver quickly reached out to stop the seemingly impulsive Magneto, pointing at the huge dam and gesturing with his hands.

"We don't even know what's inside, or even if it's a trap. Are you trying to get yourself killed by charging in like that?"

"Then what do you propose?" Magneto narrowed his eyes, and a lot could be seen in his gaze towards Quicksilver. There was disappointment, anger, but most of all, coldness. They were father and son, yes, but their relationship had nothing to do with the typical human father-son affection.

He might have a tiny bit of paternal feeling for Quicksilver, even Scarlet Witch. But compared to his career and the future of mutants, this tiny bit of emotion was completely negligible.

Quicksilver knew this too. It was precisely because he couldn't accept Magneto's willingness to sacrifice anything for his so-called cause that he and his sister had left the Brotherhood of Mutants and joined S.H.I.E.L.D. Instead. So, even if he had to work with Magneto now for the survival of mutants, he had to understand what Magneto was thinking.

"We need to figure out what's inside, what kind of enemies we'll face. Or, what's your real plan?"

"I've already told you my plan – to buy every second, to end this battle that determines the survival of mutants." Magneto's voice remained unchanged; he always stuck to his story.

Quicksilver scoffed. He knew Magneto too well.

"Erik, do you think everyone's a fool? One thing I've never believed is that you wouldn't have any plans or backup. If you're unwilling to be honest, then I won't take Wanda to her death either. Since we're going to die anyway, I'd rather die knowing the truth."

Hearing Quicksilver's straightforward answer, Magneto snorted coldly. Invisible force instantly spread out. Countless birds were startled from the forest, and although there were no unusual phenomena, everyone present felt the pain spreading throughout their bodies.

It was the pain caused by the forced interference of their own bio-magnetic fields and the violent reactions of the metal elements within their bodies.

"Are you doubting your father? Pietro Maximoff."

"No!" Quicksilver gritted his teeth, not backing down at all. "I'm questioning you, the most insane mutant leader in the world."

The fury in Magneto's eyes grew fiercer, and he increased his power, making the pain Quicksilver felt even more intense. But Quicksilver persisted, clenching his teeth so tightly that his gums started to bleed, yet refusing to yield.

Father and son were locked in a deadly standoff until someone finally couldn't watch any longer and intervened.

A faint red mist enveloped Quicksilver, and within its embrace, he exhaled sharply, his entire body relaxing. It was clear that the power Magneto had exerted on him had vanished.

"Stop it, both of you. Now is not the time to resolve your conflicts." Scarlet Witch, Wanda Maximoff, calmly stood between them. She was the only one here who wasn't afraid of Magneto's immense power, and the only one capable of stopping him. "If you continue to bicker like this, destruction will be our only outcome."

"Wanda, are you also going to obstruct my plan?" Magneto narrowed his eyes, staring intently at his daughter. His feelings for this woman were far more complex than those he held for Quicksilver.

Because Wanda's power was far greater than Quicksilver's, even exceeding his own. That mysterious, almost unimaginable ability always made Magneto harbor a subtle wariness towards her. Especially since he knew that this woman went against the dream he had pursued his entire life.

"No!" Wanda waved her hand, and the rich red mist in her palm almost condensed into a real illusion. "I'm here to resolve your conflict, or rather, I've brought information."

"Information?" Jean murmured, observing her surroundings. She noticed a figure had appeared among them.

It was a soldier in special camouflage. Judging by his equipment, he was definitely a special forces operative. Even in active service, his gear was rare, something the average soldier wouldn't even see.

"I found this guy in a hidden spot nearby. Looks like a highly skilled sniper. I think we can get some information from him," Wanda casually flicked her fingers. With her gesture, the elite soldier moved towards her like a puppet, step by step.

Seeing the soldier's dazed expression, Jean couldn't help but ask, "Do you think he can tell us anything in this state?"

"I don't expect him to tell us," Wanda smiled faintly at Jean. Red mist surged from her hands, as if it had a life of its own, entering the soldier's eyes, ears, and even his mouth. "We can just watch ourselves."

As she spoke, more red mist condensed, forming a hazy mirror in mid-air. Then, the mirror began to show many figures, all in military uniforms.

"This is... his memory?" Jean glanced curiously at Wanda, not understanding how she had done this. Was she also a mutant with psychic abilities, like herself?

Wanda subtly raised her finger, gesturing towards the mirror.

"Shh! Look closely. Our enemy might be hidden within his memories."

Jean fell silent, focusing on the images reflected in the mirror. Understanding their enemy was more crucial than discussing her teammates' abilities.

The images in the mirror were fragmented and disjointed, as if unimportant details had been forgotten. Much of it was useless to the observers, but some of the reflections provided valuable information.

The most striking were two images.

One showed numerous individuals with strange physical features standing in a dimly lit environment, like soldiers awaiting inspection. They stood rigidly at attention, while a gray-haired man in a general's uniform stared at them with a detached gaze.

At the same time, a voice emerged from the image.

"Damn it, The General really has control of these mutant freaks. What's he planning, world domination?"

"Shut up, you idiot. You want to try the Serum the General has?"

"You're right, man. I should shut up."

The image slowly drifted away from the faces of the controlled mutants, and at that moment, Jean couldn't help but cover her mouth, saying in a voice of disbelief, "Scott?"

The mirror didn't change because of her emotions, and soon a different scene appeared in the mirror.

It was a completely sealed door, or rather, a coffin. Thick metal and tempered glass layered one upon another, constructing a huge and special enclosed space. A faint white mist drifted around this thick, coffin-like isolation room, giving people a cold feeling just by looking at it.

And in this huge coffin, through the glass filled with white mist, a petite figure seemed to be frozen. And for this figure, the owner of the perspective looked at it as if they were looking at a demon.

"The General really wants to control this monster, oh my god. He must be crazy."

"Shut up. We need to move fast before that monster wakes up."

"Dude, can I bail? Damn it, I'm really scared that devil will wake up."

"Quiet! If she wakes up, we're all screwed."

The image gradually faded, finally settling on a gate with a name engraved on it.

"Eryssa Otis."
