Chapter 144 - The Hive Falls, Crisis Erupts

Four in the afternoon, deep beneath Raken City.

A line of people in biohazard suits stood before a steel door, holding precise instruments and constantly monitoring the data displayed on them. It was as if their lives depended on these readings.

And the data lines on the instruments were like a smooth highway, without a single ripple. This straight line stretched on, until the people in biohazard suits had scanned every corner, every crack of the door. From beginning to end, the data showed no change.

This finally eased the tension in the person holding the instrument. He breathed a long sigh of relief. He made a gesture to the people behind him and shouted.

"Safe, no leaks detected. The door can be opened."

After he finished speaking, the people behind him immediately began to operate like cold machines. Some of them took instruments and connected them to the devices beside the door. Through this, they could bypass the underground base's intelligent system and control the opening and closing of the door.

And more of them raised their firearms and moved to the front. These were the Vanguard Team, and they were to investigate the situation inside, clearing all obstacles for the base's reactivation. They knew very well what kind of obstacles they might encounter.

"Alright, everything is ready." The person in charge of opening the door made a gesture to the person in charge here. After seeing this gesture, the person in charge came before the Vanguard Team.

"You know what you're up against, so I expect you all know what to do."

His tone was incredibly serious, as cold as steel. But the Vanguard Team didn't care about his tone; they cared about what he said. Their lives depended on it.

"Alright! I'll repeat it one more time. No matter who you see, whether they're alive or dead, open fire immediately. Shoot them in the head. That's the only way to kill them."

"Protect the teammates around you, and don't get hurt by anything inside. If something goes wrong, report it to me immediately, understand? If you don't want to die, if you don't want to become those monsters! Now, answer me, do you understand what I'm saying?"

"Yes, sir!" The Vanguard Team answered in unison. Nobody would take such life-or-death instructions lightly.

"Good. Two minutes left. Check your equipment. As soon as the door opens, move out." With that, the person in charge turned and walked away. He went into a small tent and connected to a communication device inside. At this underground depth, only this special signal device could connect to the outside world.

"Sir, everything is ready. We can open The Hive now," the person in charge said seriously. Soon, Raymond's voice came from the other end.

"Very good. You can start on your side. Everything goes according to plan. Also, report to me every half hour, and I'll be waiting for your news."

"Understood, sir!" The person in charge hung up the communication. When he walked out of the tent again, the gate had already begun to slowly open. The deep darkness revealed from behind the door made him feel a chill from his bones.

He shook his head, trying to shake off the feeling. Then, he issued an order to the Vanguard Team who were already fully prepared.

"Move out!" With the order, the Vanguard Team silently entered the darkness. The person in charge stared intently at their backs until they were no longer visible, then he withdrew his gaze. At this moment, a sense of unease enveloped his heart, making him feel that something was bound to happen.

He had felt this way before, on the battlefield in Iraq. And that time, his best friend and brother had died in a terrorist attack. As a soldier, he didn't believe in God, but he did believe in the ethereal fate and premonitions.

He was worried about his subordinates, all of whom he had cultivated bit by bit. But he couldn't stop this operation just because of a premonition, because he knew what this operation represented.

If they succeeded, they could climb another level and become Umbrella's most elite combat personnel. But if they failed, both his subordinates and he would die, and they would die miserably. Therefore, this operation had to proceed, no matter what he sensed.

However, things might not be as bad as he thought. So far, the news from the Vanguard Team had been good news. Although there were a few zombies blocking the way, they couldn't pose any obstacle in front of the elite soldiers.

The Vanguard Team went through without any obstruction, and they had gone deep near their predetermined target. This situation made the person in charge relieved. Their predetermined target was the first external access point of the underground base. As long as they could contact the Red Queen, the central computer of The Hive, they could basically control the entire situation of the base.

However, at this moment, a scream suddenly came from the headset. Then came a series of intense gunshots. This made the person in charge's heart tighten, and he immediately shouted.

"What's happening? Report back to me immediately. Do you hear me? Answer immediately."

However, no one answered him. What came from the headset was almost entirely chilling sounds of tearing and chewing. This situation meant only one possibility, and this possibility was the one the person in charge least wanted to see.

"Close the doors, close the doors!" he shouted, wanting to close the entrance to The Hive as quickly as possible. But those in charge of the doors hadn't reacted to his order yet, and several shadows had already pounced out of the doors.

The person in charge saw these shadows, and at this moment, everything was too late. Death quickly swept over, even accompanied by even greater fear.

Half an hour later, Raymond put down the communicator with a grim expression. He knew very well what it meant to lose contact with the people who opened The Hive. It was something he, and even the entire Umbrella's upper management, didn't want to see. However, no matter how unwilling they were, it had happened. He could only report it now, hoping to find a solution before the situation worsened.

Soon, he came alone to the top-floor conference room of Umbrella. There, a group of old men were staring at him intently; they had already received Raymond's report. And now they needed to know just how bad things were.

"Speak, Raymond. What's the situation?" The old man sitting in the first seat spoke the moment he saw Raymond enter, his voice unhurried. But it made Raymond's whole back start to sweat. Even though he knew it was just a holographic projection, he still couldn't control himself.

Oswell E. Spencer, one of the founders of Umbrella, and the only one still alive. He held absolute power over the entire company, and he was ruthless, employing methods that were often bloody and cruel. Many people knew about these methods, and it was precisely because they knew that they were so wary and fearful of the old man. Because they knew they couldn't achieve that level of ruthlessness, that level of evil, like a devil. Although he had withdrawn from Umbrella now, he always had the final say at the most critical moments.

"We have completely lost contact with The Hive, and half an hour has passed. According to the estimates, we can confirm that the thing we least wanted to see has broken out," Raymond said tremulously, facing Spencer's inquiry.

After hearing his words, Spencer fell silent. The group of people around him began to discuss.

"Stop this incident, we're finished if it breaks out."

"Maybe we can contact the US military, they can help us solve this problem."

"Where's my security force? Have them establish a defensive line immediately! We've invested so much money, is it all going down the drain?"

Each voice represented one of the most powerful people in Umbrella, and at this moment, they were almost all of one mind: to stop the event from developing, to stop this terrifying Biohazard. However, they had too many opinions, so many that they were completely unable to reach a consensus.

For a moment, the entire conference room was as chaotic as a marketplace, completely unimaginable that the people who were making these sounds were usually so arrogant and overbearing.

However, the voice didn't last long, as Spencer spoke again.

"Enough, I know what to do."

As soon as he spoke, all the voices immediately disappeared. Everyone, whether those holographic projections or Raymond standing there, watched him silently, the feeling as if subjects were facing their king.

Spencer enjoyed this feeling, but he knew it wasn't the time to indulge. He looked at Raymond standing below him and said in a calm tone.

"Raymond, I remember you still have the weapon projects transported out after the Biohazard at The Hive, right?"

"Yes, sir!" Raymond searched his memory and then answered affirmatively.

"Very good, since the Biohazard has already broken out, then Raken City is beyond saving. Raymond, immediately transfer the research personnel stationed in Raken City. They are the most precious wealth and must be taken out of Raken City before everything becomes irreversible!"

"I understand, sir, I will arrange it immediately!"

Seeing Raymond's respectful demeanor, Spencer nodded. He continued to instruct:

"Umbrella paid a huge price to build Raken City. Now that Raken City cannot be saved, we must salvage our losses as much as possible. Raymond, I authorize you to launch the Nemesis Project. Experiment with this weapon in Raken City, which is about to erupt."

"You are fully in charge, and you must record all the data on this weapon for me. It is your guarantee of survival. If anything goes wrong with it, you should know what will happen to you!"

"Yes, sir. I understand!" Even with Spencer speaking to him like this, Raymond only nodded and bowed in response. He didn't dare to have any other thoughts in front of Spencer.

"Very good, at least you still have some use. Now, there are two things I must remind you of, and these two things you must accomplish."

"Dr. William and our new friend, Mr. Zhou Yi."
