Chapter 12 - Chapter No.12: Tragedy On The Horizon, Part 2

With his head so overwhelmed with thoughts that he can't even focus, Gilles is sitting in his car behind Bill's, prepared for the race to get started in any moment. He feels his heart pumping unhealthy fast, his brain shattered into many pieces, his hands feeling cold, so cold they could fall off any time. It's obvious that he doesn't feel well, in fact if he could, he wouldn't even race this day.

After few more moments the race is started and in the sound of revving engines trying to shout louder than the other, all the drivers set off the starting line!

The race goes on and Gilles chases Bill down furiously, trying to close the gap as much as he can and stay in the slipstream. They practically race in their own league now, leaving all the other drivers behind them.

After many laps Bill goes into tahe pits for new tires and Gilles follows him right at his tail. Bill changes on hard tires, Gilles on soft ones. After few seconds both drivers leave the pits, coming on the track side by side, Gilles is on the inside and doesn't intend to slow down to let Bill pass him. Gilles goes through the first turns of this oval circuit, what he didn't think of was the fact that with such a speed he will not manage to stay on the inside line on the exit part of the corner and so it happened that he drives too wide and finds Bill behind him and not only that, Bill seems to gain more and more speed on the straight line so he gets ahead of Gilles again.

"What the hell happened now? I should have thought this would happen! Is he that good or am I just... too bad?" Gilles says to himself.

Gilles than tryes to push to close a gap on him and get into the slip stream and so he manages. He copyes Bill's line through the corners literally perfectly. After few laps he even seems to be faster than Bill. Gilles notices this oportunity and on an exit of a corner he presses the throttle clutch down to the floor and uses the air pocket behind Bill gain way higher speed than him and right before the entry of the next corner gets beside him on the inside. He then brakes hard to rapidly slow down and twitches his steering wheel into a skid and so it happened that he finally finds himself on the first spot!

But Bill doesn't give up! He is right behind Gilles' tail, not close enough to pass him, but close enough to push Gilles to the limits not of his own but more importantly... his tires. Gilles' main mechanic notices this strategy and after few laps he shows him a signal sign to change tires and Gilles does come into the pits right after he sees this.

What he also sees is Bill pracitcally flying around the pits and taking his leading spot back. Gilles' pit stop couldn't be worse. The mechanics can't manage to take the old tires off the wheels for a while and then the new tires fall all around the place. Gilles clearly mad starts shouting at the mechanics for ruining his race and the main one tryes to calm him down that he will still have time to pass him but he is taken aback by Gilles' next words.

"Fuck more time and fuck another chance to pass! I had a wonderful advantage over him and you ruined it for me! I can drive over my limits, over limits of this car and it is for nothing because you can't manage to do what you are supposed to do!"

"Calm down, kid! We picked the strategy we thought was the best."

"Then you should have picked better because it sucks!" Gilles lowers his visor and sets off the pits.

For many laps that he tryes to push as hard as he can his mind races wildly and doesn't let him rest. He regrets his words.

"Why did I shout at him? Why was I that mad? They maybe screwed up, sure. But everybody makes mistakes and moreover this would be a good strategy but Bill's one is just a total counter to it. Was this in an affect of the race or am I becoming one of the selfish ones, aggressive ones, the unliked ones, the... monster ones? I think that I am the monster one! There is no doubt that she will not stay with me after what she will find. She doesn't deserve such a fate. I am sorry Joann." He then looks into the fan crowd to catch in sight the one last hope he has but unfortunately for him, she isn't here today.

He then looks back in front of him where a lot of cars are and one is right ahead of him. He needs to decide if to overtake him before the next corner or to slow down and pass him in the exit part of this corner. Before entering it he decides to overtake him while he still have the advantage to do this maneuver on the straight line. He indicates to go on the inside line and as expected, the driver ahead shuts his way there but in the spot were the track is already curving. While turning his car, its wheels touch the grass in a high speed and his car loses grip causing it to skid into the track. Gilles tryes to twitch his steering wheel to dodge the car... but he fails to manage this maneuver.

His front wing touches the spinning car and he skids as well. Doing many spins in the high speed before turning to face the barrier before crashing into it. The front part of the car departing from the rest of it. The car bounces off the barrier and ends up in the middle of the track.

"Someone help me! Please! I... I can't move my leg!" Gilles looks at the part of the leg that hurts him and then he witnesses his bone sticking out of his thigh, area around it covered in blood. After this he passes out.
