Chapter 4 - - Oh No . Updated

The first thing I see when I wake up is a notification floating approximately three inches above my nose.

GOOD MORNING, Status Update

Status: Alive

Vital Stability: 83%

Fatigue: High

Emotional Stability: Suspiciously Good

Previous Event: Imperial Victory Ball — Completed

Next Event: FAMILY VISIT

Difficulty: High Affection / Extreme Embarrassment

Recommendation: Brace.

I stare at it.

Then slowly pull the blanket over my face.

"No."

A familiar voice drifts from somewhere near the window.

"An excellent strategy."

Lyriel.

"If your family sees only a blanket mound, perhaps they'll assume you've escaped."

I lower the blanket just enough to glare at her.

"Can I?"

"No."

"Could you open a portal?"

"Yes."

Hope blooms.

"I won't."

Hope dies.

"Traitor."

"Physician-adjacent traitor."

"It's worse when you qualify it."

Morning light spills softly through the tall windows of my palace room, turning the curtains gold at the edges.

The place has been invaded.

Quietly.

Completely.

Seraphine occupies the sofa near the fireplace with a stack of documents balanced beside her. Her crown is nowhere to be seen. Instead, her hair is loosely braided over one shoulder, and she's dressed in a soft white morning gown rather than anything remotely imperial.

She looks unfairly domestic.

Every few minutes she signs something, stamps something else, then glances toward my bed to make sure I'm still breathing.

Elira is sitting cross-legged on the rug near the foot of my bed.

Polishing a sword.

In my bedroom.

At eight in the morning.

I still haven't learned why she needs that sword here.

Maybe romance requires defensive steel.

Lyriel stands by the window surrounded by notebooks, loose papers, and enough medical diagrams to make me deeply uncomfortable.

And Mira—

Mira is curled into an armchair with pale rose yarn looped over one finger.

She's knitting.

I stare.

"What are you making?"

Mira looks up.

Then immediately smiles when she realizes I'm properly awake.

"Nothing."

Suspicious.

"That is clearly something."

She looks down at the soft bundle in her lap.

"It's..."

Her cheeks pink.

"A shawl."

"For who?"

Silence.

"Mira."

"You get cold."

My heart folds in half.

"Oh."

Her smile turns shy.

"It isn't finished yet."

"Take your time."

I pause.

"Preferably several decades."

The room goes quiet.

Damn.

Still learning which jokes land differently when you're terminally ill.

Mira's expression softens.

Seraphine's pen stops.

Elira stops polishing.

Lyriel looks up.

I grimace.

"Sorry."

Seraphine is the first to recover.

"We'll accept several decades."

Her voice is gentle.

"But I expect at least eight."

I blink.

"Eight?"

"Decades."

"Ambitious."

"I am Crown Princess."

"Is that medically relevant?"

"No."

"Then why—"

"Because I said so."

Fair enough.

Mira abandons the knitting and comes to my bedside.

"How do you feel?"

"Like I danced for half the night, publicly confessed my love to four women, caused the chandeliers to develop romantic pyromania, and got home significantly later than my doctor would approve."

"I am your doctor."

"Exactly."

Mira places one glowing hand against my forehead.

Warmth spreads through me.

Not enough to erase the exhaustion.

Just enough to soften it.

My legs still ache from dancing.

My chest feels heavy in that familiar, distant way I've begun to recognize as my body's version of a warning rather than pain.

But I don't feel terrible.

More importantly—

I feel happy.

That's almost stranger.

Seraphine sets her papers aside.

"Any dizziness?"

"Only if I stand too fast."

"Shortness of breath?"

"No."

"Nausea?"

"No."

"Sudden desire to run away with the green-dressed envoy who stared at you for half the ball?"

I blink.

"Maybe."

Four heads turn.

Even Lyriel.

I hold up both hands.

"Joke."

Elira points her polishing cloth at me.

"Don't."

"You can't ban jokes."

"I can ban that joke."

Seraphine looks frighteningly thoughtful.

"I might actually have the authority."

"Absolutely not."

The HUD flickers.

GROUP JEALOUSY: 19%

Status: Contained

Recommendation: Do not mention attractive foreign diplomats again.

I dismiss it.

Coward.

Then someone knocks.

Three measured knocks.

Not servants.

Not guards.

Something changes in the room.

Seraphine sits straighter.

Elira rises.

Lyriel closes her notebook.

Mira smooths her dress.

My stomach drops.

"Oh."

The system wasn't joking.

The doors open.

House Ardentis arrives.

Not enters.

Arrives.

There is a difference.

My father comes first.

Marquis Cassian von Ardentis.

Tall.

Broad-shouldered.

Dressed in black and deep crimson with the Ardentis flame-rose embroidered discreetly across his collar.

Silver runs through dark-gold hair at his temples.

His face is stern enough that portrait artists probably ask permission before adding shadows.

But his eyes—

Sapphire.

Like mine.

Only darker.

A banked blue fire held behind years of noble restraint.

Beside him is my mother.

Marchioness Helena von Ardentis.

And seeing her hurts.

Not badly.

Not physically.

Somewhere deeper.

Her hair is a rich gold-red, gathered elegantly behind her head with crimson pins. Her green eyes are soft, bright, and already suspiciously wet.

Her dress is dark burgundy rather than court crimson, practical by aristocratic standards, with flame-roses embroidered around the sleeves.

Behind them are two younger faces I know before my brain supplies their names.

Isolde.

My older sister.

Poised.

Beautiful.

Her dark-gold hair falls in controlled waves over one shoulder, and she carries a folded fan like a concealed weapon.

Then Lucian.

My younger brother.

Tall and lanky, with messy dark-gold hair and the same Ardentis blue eyes.

He looks like he fought formal clothing and formal clothing barely won.

Servants follow carrying boxes.

Blankets.

Baskets.

Flowers.

And one enormous covered pot that smells—

My chest tightens.

I know that smell.

Before I know why I know it.

Herbs.

Chicken.

Orange peel.

Cloves.

The memory doesn't belong to Fumiko.

It comes anyway.

Rain against estate windows.

A much smaller body buried under blankets.

Mother sitting beside me.

Another spoon, little flame.

Father pretending to read while secretly checking whether my fever had broken.

Lucian, much younger, sneaking sugared almonds underneath my pillow.

Isolde braiding my hair because I was too weak to sit up for long.

The memory hits hard enough that for one horrible second I don't know whose heart is breaking.

Mine.

Fiametta's.

Maybe that distinction doesn't matter anymore.

"Fia."

Mother says it.

Just my name.

No title.

No Hero of Dawnridge.

No Flame of the Empire.

No Final Calamity.

Fia.

Her daughter.

My throat closes.

She crosses the room.

Every ounce of noble composure disappears.

"Oh, sweetheart."

And suddenly I'm in her arms.

I stiffen.

Not because I don't want it.

Because some part of me remembers this embrace so perfectly that it terrifies me.

One hand goes around my shoulders.

The other cradles the back of my head.

She smells like rose oil and the Ardentis estate.

Home.

A home I have never lived in.

A home my body remembers anyway.

Mother draws back.

Her hands immediately frame my face.

"Look at you."

Her eyes travel everywhere.

My cheeks.

My eyes.

My lips.

My shoulders.

"You've lost weight."

"Have I?"

"You're pale."

"I'm always pale."

"Your eyes are tired."

"I attended a ball."

"You should not have attended a ball."

"Mother—"

"You should have attended half a ball."

"That's not how balls work."

"It is now."

Something dangerously close to a sob escapes her.

Then she pulls me back into her chest.

My protests die.

Because her arms are shaking.

She's trying to hide it.

She isn't succeeding.

"I'm sorry," she whispers into my hair.

That confuses me.

"For what?"

"For not being here when you woke."

My chest tightens.

"The messenger said you'd collapsed."

Her voice trembles.

"Then another said you were stable."

Her grip tightens.

"Then another said you had gone to Dawnridge."

I close my eyes.

"Mother."

"Then they said you had used your authority."

She pulls back.

Tears stand openly in her eyes now.

"And then they said you had collapsed again."

Nobody in the room moves.

Mother gives a small, broken laugh.

"Do you know what it's like to receive six letters in a day and have every one begin with Lady Fiametta survived?"

Oh.

I don't have an answer.

Her thumb strokes my cheek.

"It is a terrible sentence."

My eyes burn.

"I'm sorry."

"No."

Father's voice.

Low.

Firm.

He has reached the bedside without me noticing.

"Do not apologize for surviving."

I look at him.

For the first time since entering, his expression cracks.

Not much.

Cassian von Ardentis is apparently a man who experiences emotion in geological movements.

But it's there.

Fear.

Relief.

Anger.

Love.

He touches my hair.

Just once.

"Apologize for terrifying your mother."

Mother looks at him.

"Cassian."

"And me."

There.

Quieter.

Barely audible.

"And all of us."

Lucian looks abruptly at the floor.

Isolde closes her fan.

My chest hurts worse.

"I..."

What am I supposed to say?

Sorry your daughter is gone and some exhausted former college student woke inside her body?

Except...

Is she gone?

The memories don't feel dead.

Mother's soup.

Father sitting beside a sickbed.

Lucian's sweets.

Isolde's hands in my hair.

I don't remember everything.

But I remember enough to love them before I've even properly met them.

That's terrifying.

And beautiful.

"I didn't mean to scare you."

Father's jaw tightens.

"That is generally how you scare us."

Lucian snorts.

Isolde murmurs, "She's correct."

"Whose side are you on?" I ask.

"Mine."

Okay.

Definitely my sister.

Mother wipes her eyes and immediately changes targets.

She looks at Seraphine.

Seraphine straightens.

"Your Highness."

Mother bows.

Not deeply.

House Ardentis is powerful enough that even the Crown gets graceful confidence rather than fearful submission.

"Marchioness."

Seraphine returns the greeting.

Mother's gaze moves over all four women.

Seraphine.

Elira.

Lyriel.

Mira.

Then back to Seraphine.

"You love my daughter."

Not a question.

Seraphine doesn't hesitate.

"Yes."

"You were at Dawnridge."

"Yes."

"You tried to stop her?"

"Repeatedly."

Elira raises a hand.

"Very repeatedly."

Lyriel adds, "I threatened unconsciousness."

Mira quietly says, "I begged."

Mother looks at me.

I shrink slightly into my pillows.

Father crosses his arms.

"Fiametta."

Uh-oh.

The full name.

"I made a calculated decision."

"No," Elira says.

I stare at her.

"Whose team are you on?"

"Survival's."

Father nods approvingly.

I have lost control of this hearing.

He looks down at me.

"You went to an active battlefield while terminally ill."

"I was supposed to stand behind the lines."

"You used an authority-class spell."

"The line broke."

"You collapsed."

"After we won."

His eyebrow moves.

Wrong answer.

"Fiametta."

"I know."

"You nearly died."

That shuts me up.

Father's voice doesn't rise.

That's worse.

"You are an adult."

I blink.

That's not where I thought this was going.

"You are a noblewoman. You are capable of making your own choices. I will not pretend otherwise."

He leans closer.

"But adulthood does not grant you the right to pretend your death would belong only to you."

Everything inside me stills.

Father gestures around the room.

"Look."

So I do.

Mother standing beside me with red eyes.

Isolde gripping her closed fan.

Lucian staring at the carpet because he's absolutely not crying.

Seraphine.

Elira.

Lyriel.

Mira.

Father's voice softens.

"Every time you throw yourself into danger, everyone in this room goes with you."

Oh.

That hurts.

Because I've spent so much of this new life thinking about dying.

My death flag.

My illness.

My bad ending.

My timer.

Mine.

Except it isn't.

Not anymore.

Last night I said I wanted to live because I finally knew who I wanted to live for.

Apparently there is another half to that truth.

There are people who need me to live for them too.

"I understand."

Father studies me.

"Do you?"

I think of Seraphine crying over me at Dawnridge.

Mira's hands covered in my blood.

Lyriel saying she'd understand my illness even if it took years.

Elira saying home.

My mother trembling while holding me.

"More than I did before."

Father's expression softens.

"Good."

A beat.

"You're still grounded."

I stare.

"What?"

Lucian loses the battle and laughs.

"Father."

"Grounded."

"I'm an adult!"

"Yes."

"You literally just said that."

"I did."

"You can't ground an adult noblewoman!"

Father considers.

"I am the Marquis of Ardentis."

"And?"

"And I have resources."

I stare at him.

Isolde covers her smile with her fan.

Seraphine looks dangerously entertained.

"Define grounded."

"No battlefields unless deployment is absolutely unavoidable."

"Reasonable."

"No unsupervised calamity-class spellcasting."

Lyriel nods enthusiastically.

"Traitor."

"No leaving physicians behind."

Mira nods.

Another traitor.

Father continues.

"And if your condition deteriorates, you return either here or to Ardentis territory until stable."

I pause.

That's...

Actually very reasonable.

Still.

Principle.

"I object to the terminology."

"Objection recorded."

"Am I still grounded?"

"Yes."

"You're impossible."

His mouth twitches.

"So are you."

The HUD appears.

NEW TITLE ACQUIRED

HEARTH'S RECKLESS FLAMEGranted By: Marquis Cassian von Ardentis

Effects:

+25% Parental Scolding

+40% Family Protection

+50% Chance of Being Fed Against Your Will

I stare at the final line.

"No."

Mother turns.

"Open."

There's a spoon in front of my mouth.

Where did she even get that?

"Mother."

"Open."

"Did the system summon that?"

"What?"

"Nothing."

I surrender.

Warm broth touches my tongue.

And the world breaks.

Not literally.

Memory.

Instantly.

Violently.

I'm eight.

Maybe nine.

Rain against the estate windows.

My body weak with fever.

Mother sitting beside me.

The same broth.

The exact same taste.

Orange peel.

Rosemary.

Chicken cooked until it nearly dissolves.

A tiny amount of clove.

One more spoon, little flame.

I don't want it.

One more.

Promise?

Promise.

Then Father's voice from somewhere nearby:

Helena, you said one more three spoons ago.

Cassian, stop counting.

The memory vanishes.

I'm back.

Thirty-two? No.

Fumiko was twenty-two.

Fiametta's age—

My head spins.

Mother lowers the spoon.

"Fia?"

Something wet touches my cheek.

I'm crying.

"Oh."

I laugh weakly.

"Sorry."

Mother immediately sets the bowl aside.

"What's wrong?"

"Nothing."

How do I explain?

"I..."

My voice cracks.

"I remembered this."

Her face changes.

"The soup."

"From when I was little."

Mother's hands cover mine.

"You always asked me to make it whenever the physicians confined you to bed."

Another memory.

Me complaining.

Mother laughing.

Lucian stealing carrots from the bowl.

Isolde sitting by the window.

I squeeze my eyes shut.

"I remember pieces."

The room goes very still.

Mother looks at Father.

Seraphine does too.

Lyriel's expression sharpens, but she doesn't interrupt.

Mother strokes my knuckles.

"The healers told us your memories have been strange since the collapse."

I open my eyes.

"You know?"

"Seraphine wrote us."

Of course she did.

"I was afraid..."

Mother stops.

Then smiles through fresh tears.

"I was afraid you might not remember us."

My heart breaks.

"I do."

Not enough.

Maybe not correctly.

But—

"I remember you."

Mother exhales.

It's almost a sob.

Then she kisses my forehead.

"That's enough."

And something inside me unclenches.

Once everyone has confirmed that I am alive, conscious, fed, and sufficiently ashamed of my battlefield decisions, House Ardentis begins unpacking.

This is a tactical operation.

Servants transform my sitting room.

Food covers a low table.

Bread.

Stew.

Fruit.

Spiced tea.

Pastries.

Several dishes I recognize only because Fiametta's memories recognize them first.

Blankets appear.

So many blankets.

Boxes.

Books.

Letters from estate staff.

Flowers from people I apparently grew up around.

I pick up one note.

Lady Fia, please recover quickly. The east greenhouse roses finally bloomed.

Another.

The kitchen staff unanimously requests that you stop frightening the Marchioness.

I laugh.

Then my throat tightens.

These people knew her.

Know me.

The distinction keeps getting harder.

Lucian hovers near the foot of the bed.

Pretending not to hover.

He stares at my medal.

Then at me.

Then at the medal.

"You look weird."

I blink.

"Good morning to you too."

"I don't mean physically."

"Excellent recovery."

He sighs.

"The title."

"What about it?"

"Hero of Dawnridge."

His nose wrinkles.

"It sounds..."

He searches.

"Too big."

I look down at the medal.

"Yeah."

"The reports made you sound like some legendary weapon."

His expression darkens.

"The Flame of the Empire descended upon Dawnridge."

He does an exaggerated announcer voice.

"Her enemies vanished before her wrath."

I grimace.

"I hate that."

"So do I."

His humor disappears.

"Because the next report said you were unconscious."

I look at him.

Lucian's hands curl around the bedframe.

"They made you sound invincible."

His voice drops.

"Then Mother started crying."

My chest tightens.

He looks away.

"And Father locked himself in his office."

Father, across the room, becomes extremely interested in a document.

Lucian notices.

"So I broke a training dummy."

"One?"

"Three."

Elira makes an approving sound.

Mother does not.

"Lucian."

"What? They were already old."

Mother's stare says this conversation will continue later.

Lucian turns back to me.

"I hate it."

"What?"

"Your illness."

There is nothing playful left.

"I hate that everyone looks at you and sees this ridiculously powerful person."

His eyes shine.

"And I look at you and remember carrying water to your room because you were too weak to walk downstairs."

A memory flickers.

Lucian smaller.

Trying to carry a water pitcher with both hands.

Spilling half of it.

Young Fia laughing from bed.

My throat closes.

"If the illness were something I could fight..."

He looks embarrassed by the words.

"I'd kill it."

I reach toward him.

He hesitates.

Then takes my hand.

"Get in line."

He laughs.

A broken little thing.

Then squeezes hard.

"Don't die before I get a chance."

"I'll do my best."

His face tightens.

I correct myself.

"No."

He looks at me.

"I'll fight."

Something changes.

That's what he needed.

Not a joke.

Not reassurance I couldn't guarantee.

A promise to try.

"Good."

He releases me.

Then immediately ruins the moment by poking my forehead.

"Idiot."

"Brat."

"Calamity."

"Sibling affection is beautiful."

Isolde approaches after Lucian retreats toward the pastries.

She closes her fan.

"Little sister."

Something in the way she says it is very gentle.

"You've caused a constitutional incident."

"Only one?"

"Three, technically."

I sigh.

"Better than expected."

Her gaze moves toward Seraphine.

Then Elira.

Lyriel.

Mira.

Seraphine is formally my betrothed.

The other three are—

What?

Partners?

Future wives, hopefully.

Petitioners to an unprecedented legal union.

That sounds deeply unromantic.

Isolde's mouth curves.

"So."

"No."

"I haven't asked anything."

"You have an older-sister face."

"I have one face."

"That's false."

She opens her fan.

"Four women."

My ears heat.

"There it is."

"One Crown Princess."

"Yes."

"One Knight-Captain."

"Yes."

"One Imperial Archmage."

"Yes."

"One Saintess."

"Yes."

"And you announced publicly that you'd like to marry all of them."

I pull a blanket up slightly.

"That did happen."

Mother, arranging dishes nearby, smiles brightly.

"I cried."

Father looks up.

"You cried before she answered."

"I had faith."

Isolde turns toward the four women.

"And this arrangement is serious?"

Seraphine rises.

No hesitation.

"Completely."

Elira nods.

"For me too."

Lyriel folds her arms.

"I've already reviewed forty-three years of marriage statutes."

Everyone looks at her.

"What?"

She frowns.

"The legal council is inefficient."

Of course.

Mira smiles softly.

"I don't need a title."

Her eyes move to me.

"But if Fia still wants me beside her..."

My heart squeezes.

"I do."

Her smile blooms.

Isolde watches all of this.

Then looks toward Father.

He sighs.

"Yes."

I blink.

"Yes what?"

"House Ardentis will formally support the petition."

Silence.

Even Seraphine looks surprised.

"Father."

He meets my eyes.

"You want this?"

"Yes."

"All four?"

My face burns.

"Yes."

Father nods.

"Then House Ardentis supports it."

Just like that.

Mother's smile trembles.

Isolde looks satisfied.

Lucian, mouth full of pastry, raises a fist.

"Four sisters-in-law."

Elira laughs.

Lyriel corrects him.

"Potential sisters-in-law."

"You're ruining it."

"Accuracy matters."

Lucian points at her.

"You're definitely going to be the annoying one."

"I have been called worse."

Seraphine's eyes have gone suspiciously bright.

Father notices.

"Your Highness."

Seraphine straightens.

"You do not need our permission to marry our daughter."

His voice becomes gentler.

"But you have our blessing."

Seraphine's lips part.

For once, Crown Princess Seraphine Lys Albrecht has no speech prepared.

"Thank you."

Two words.

Soft.

Real.

Father then looks at Elira.

"Knight-Captain."

Elira stands straighter.

"Marquis."

"Protect her."

Elira's answer comes instantly.

"With my life."

Father shakes his head.

"No."

Everyone pauses.

"Protect her with your judgment."

Elira's expression changes.

"Anyone can die for someone."

Father glances toward me.

"Convince her to live instead."

Elira looks at me.

Her eyes soften.

"I will."

Father turns toward Lyriel.

"Find answers."

Lyriel doesn't make a joke.

"I intend to."

Then Mira.

Father's severity fades.

"Keep her heart gentle."

Mira looks almost startled.

"I..."

She smiles.

"I think she does that herself."

Father looks toward me.

"Sometimes."

Rude.

Mother comes closer.

"And all four of you."

The women focus on her.

"Love her."

Seraphine smiles.

"That one is easy."

My eyes burn.

Great.

Fantastic.

I'm crying again.

The HUD chimes.

MAJOR SOCIAL CONDITION ACHIEVED

HOUSE ARDENTIS — FORMAL APPROVALSeraphine–Fiametta Betrothal: Fully Supported

Burning Constellation Petition: House Ardentis Endorsement Added

Political Resistance: Reduced

Wedding Planning Threat Level: Increasing Rapidly

I wipe my eyes.

"That last one seems ominous."

Lyriel glances at me.

"What?"

"Nothing."

Then Lucian remembers something.

"Oh."

He turns.

Isolde groans.

"You forgot?"

"I was distracted."

"By food."

"Food is distracting."

Mother points.

"The gift."

Lucian immediately looks like he wants to jump out the window.

"What gift?"

"No gift."

"There is absolutely a gift now."

Isolde reaches behind him.

Lucian twists.

"Don't."

She takes a small wrapped package from the table.

"Traitor."

"Sibling duty."

She gives it to me.

Lucian's ears turn red.

"It's stupid."

Perfect opening.

"I love it."

"You haven't opened it."

"Preemptive affection."

He looks deeply uncomfortable.

Excellent.

I unwrap it.

Inside is a small wooden figure.

Me.

Sort of.

The little carving wears a huge cloak.

Its carved hair explodes backward like it's fighting hurricane-force winds.

Its arms are planted dramatically at its sides.

Red stain has been brushed along the cloak's edge to resemble fire.

The expression is stubborn.

Almost angry.

It's adorable.

I can't breathe for a moment.

Lucian immediately panics.

"I told you it was bad."

"No."

"It's crooked."

"No."

"The face came out weird."

"Lucian."

I look up.

"It's perfect."

His embarrassment disappears.

He sees my face.

"Oh."

Damn tears.

Again.

"Don't cry."

"I'm not."

"You are."

"Shut up."

"It's ugly enough already. Tears will make it worse."

I clutch the little figure against my chest.

"It's going beside my bed forever."

His face does something heartbreaking.

"Permanently?"

"Yes."

A pause.

"As in..."

He doesn't finish.

He doesn't need to.

As in you'll be here long enough for forever to mean something.

I hold his eyes.

"For as long as I'm here."

No.

Wrong.

I correct myself.

"For as long as I can make it."

Better.

He smiles.

"Okay."

I place the figurine on my nightstand.

Next to Seraphine's flower from last night.

The system appears.

TRINKET REGISTERED

TINY RECKLESS FLAMECreator: Lucian von Ardentis

Effect: Unknown

Then the text glitches.

Correction:

Effect: You are loved. Stop asking for statistics.

I stare.

Wow.

Even the system is getting sentimental.

The babying begins shortly afterward.

I should have anticipated this.

House Ardentis apparently interprets "terminal illness" as permission to revoke approximately seventy percent of my independence.

Mother controls food.

"Eat."

"I ate."

"Again."

"That's not how food works."

"You're too thin."

"I'm objectively not."

"Mother rules override objectivity."

That's terrifying.

Isolde controls blankets.

One.

Two.

Three.

By number four I object.

"I'm warm."

"You always become cold after magical exhaustion."

"That was days ago."

"You were exhausted again last night."

"From dancing."

"Your body does not care why."

She adds another.

Lucian controls entertainment.

He deposits novels beside me.

"These don't look educational."

"They aren't."

"I love you."

"I know."

Father controls politics.

He sits near the fireplace reviewing documents concerning my military deployment, medical autonomy, Ardentis protections, and apparently something titled:

PROPOSED RESTRICTIONS ON IMPERIAL UTILIZATION OF HIGH-RISK NOBLE MAGICAL ASSETS

I point.

"Am I the asset?"

Father doesn't look up.

"No."

"Father."

"Yes."

"That's somehow insulting."

"The document is intended to prevent people from using you as one."

Oh.

"Carry on."

Mira is delighted.

She and Mother become allies almost immediately.

This is dangerous.

"She needs more protein."

"I agree."

"Her sleep schedule?"

"Terrible."

"Hydration?"

"She forgets."

I stare.

"Mira."

She looks guilty.

"I'm helping."

"No, you're building a case against me."

Lyriel joins them.

"Her resting heart rate has improved."

"LYRIEL."

"What? That's positive."

Seraphine tries defending me.

At first.

"Fia is more capable than you're giving her credit for."

Mother turns.

"She collapsed twice."

Seraphine pauses.

"Yes."

"Coughed blood repeatedly."

"Yes."

"Used forbidden levels of magic while medically unstable."

Seraphine looks at me.

I become extremely interested in Lucian's wooden figure.

"...Yes."

Mother folds her arms.

Seraphine slowly changes sides.

"She should probably have another blanket."

"Betrayal."

Elira laughs so hard she nearly falls out of her chair.

Then Mother looks at her.

"And you."

Elira stops laughing.

"You allow her to train."

"I supervise."

"She is terminally ill."

"Light training."

Mother narrows her eyes.

Elira, mighty Knight-Captain of the imperial armies, visibly folds under maternal pressure.

"Very light."

Mira whispers:

"She once trained until she fainted."

Elira turns.

"Mira."

"I'm sorry!"

Mother goes terrifyingly still.

Father looks up from his documents.

Isolde stops arranging books.

Lucian whispers:

"Oh, she's dead."

"Not Fia," Elira says quickly.

Nobody laughs.

I sink deeper beneath my blankets.

The HUD appears.

"System, shut up."

Everyone looks at me.

"Nothing."

Mother sits beside me.

Takes my hand.

"Fia."

"Yes?"

"We are going to establish rules."

I groan.

"Reasonable rules."

"That phrase terrifies me."

"Someone from House Ardentis will remain close to the capital whenever possible."

I blink.

"Mother."

"We won't interfere with your life."

Father makes a skeptical noise.

Mother ignores him.

"But if the palace needs us, we're here."

She squeezes my hand.

"If you're sick, we'll come."

Another squeeze.

"If you need to return home, your room is exactly as you left it."

That stops me.

"My room?"

"Of course."

Mother looks genuinely confused.

"Did you think we changed it?"

I don't know what I thought.

I didn't think there was a room.

Not really.

Not somewhere outside these palace walls.

A room with Fiametta's things.

My things.

A childhood.

Evidence.

Mother smiles.

"The curtains are still awful."

"They are not."

A memory surfaces.

Deep crimson curtains covered in gold phoenixes.

Extremely dramatic.

I gasp.

"They are amazing."

Mother laughs.

There.

I remember that laugh.

I smile.

"Can we visit?"

Every face changes.

Mother's eyes widen.

"Ardentis?"

I nod.

"Not immediately."

Mira opens her mouth.

I point.

"I know."

She closes it.

"When I'm strong enough."

Mother looks close to crying again.

"Of course."

Lucian grins.

"I'll show you the new training yard."

Four women speak simultaneously.

"No."

Lucian blinks.

I burst out laughing.

"Okay."

He points around.

"This is going to be unbearable."

"You have no idea."

The afternoon fades around us.

At some point Mother sits beside me and begins running her fingers through my hair.

I almost protest.

Then don't.

Her touch is slow.

Familiar.

Too familiar.

"You always liked this when you were sick."

"I remember."

The words come naturally.

Mother pauses.

Then continues.

"You would pretend you didn't."

"That also sounds right."

"You were a terrible patient."

"I've been informed."

"You still are."

"Consistency."

Her fingers smooth through gold strands.

My eyes grow heavy.

Across the room, Father reads.

Every few minutes he looks up.

Checks me.

Looks back down.

Once I catch him.

Our eyes meet.

He immediately returns to the page.

I smile.

He turns another page.

Upside down.

I decide not to mention it.

Isolde sits near the bed reading.

Lucian is on the floor arguing quietly with Elira about sword grips.

Mira has resumed knitting.

Lyriel and Seraphine are discussing legal language for the union petition.

It's loud.

Warm.

Messy.

Family.

And suddenly—

grief hits me.

Unexpected.

Sharp.

I turn my face toward Mother's lap.

She notices immediately.

"Fia?"

"I..."

How do I say this without saying everything?

"I feel like I've missed this."

Mother strokes my hair.

"You've been gone from home too long."

That's not what I meant.

Maybe it is.

"I'm sorry."

"For what?"

I swallow.

"For being away."

Mother bends down and kisses my hair.

"Then come home more."

Simple.

No accusation.

No punishment.

Come home more.

My eyes close.

"Okay."

Eventually, duty wins.

Father is summoned to meet with the Emperor and military council.

Isolde has estate correspondence waiting.

Lucian apparently has training.

Mother calls it:

"Attempting to stab your feelings instead of discussing them."

Lucian nearly dies of embarrassment.

They begin saying goodbye.

Isolde comes first.

She squeezes my shoulder.

"I'll send books."

"Good ones."

"I know your taste."

That statement hits harder than she realizes.

She kisses my temple.

"Don't make us come racing back here because you've decided to challenge another army."

"No promises."

Her stare sharpens.

"I promise."

"Better."

Lucian lingers.

Then suddenly throws his arms around me.

Hard.

Quick.

Before I can react.

Then he's gone.

I stare.

He reaches the doorway.

"Don't mention that."

"I'm telling everyone."

"I hate you."

"Love you too."

He disappears.

Father comes next.

He stands beside the bed.

No speech.

No grand declaration.

He simply rests his hand on top of my head.

Heavy.

Warm.

"Rest."

I nod.

"Yes, Father."

His thumb moves once through my hair.

"Let us worry for you sometimes."

Something catches in my throat.

"I'll try."

"Good."

Then Mother.

She sits beside me one last time.

Her hands cup my face.

"My little flame."

There it is.

That name.

The one her voice remembers better than my mind does.

She kisses my forehead.

"Don't burn yourself away trying to keep everyone else warm."

My eyes sting.

"I won't."

She holds my gaze.

I correct myself.

"I'll try very hard not to."

Satisfied.

Mostly.

"And Fia?"

"Yes?"

"I don't care what the physicians say about how much time you may or may not have."

Her voice trembles.

"You are allowed to plan for a future."

That one breaks through everything.

My game logic.

My humor.

My fear.

Terminal.

Irreversible.

Bad ending.

The words that have followed me since I woke up.

Mother brushes a tear from my cheek.

"Plan your wedding."

Another tear.

"Come visit home."

Another.

"Argue with your siblings."

Her own eyes fill.

"Grow tired of your father's lectures."

Father, near the door, says:

"Unlikely."

Mother ignores him.

"Make plans for next year."

My breath catches.

"And the year after that."

She presses her forehead against mine.

"Let tomorrow worry about proving you wrong."

I can't speak.

So I hug her.

Hard.

She hugs me harder.

"I love you."

The words leave before I think about them.

Mother freezes.

Then holds me even tighter.

"I love you too."

And this time—

I don't wonder whether that love belongs to Fiametta.

Or Fumiko.

It's mine.

Because I'm the one feeling it.

Eventually they leave.

The door closes.

Silence settles.

Not empty silence.

The kind left behind after people fill a room with so much love that some of it remains after they're gone.

I stare at the door.

Seraphine exhales.

"Your family is terrifying."

Mira smiles.

"They're wonderful."

Elira settles at the foot of my bed.

"Your father grounded the Final Calamity."

"He did."

"I respect him immensely."

"I don't."

"You do."

"...A little."

Lyriel picks up Lucian's carved figurine.

She studies it.

"Anatomically questionable."

"Put my brother down."

She returns it immediately.

Seraphine sits beside me.

For a moment none of them speak.

Then she gently pulls one of the blankets down from my face.

"You okay?"

I look around.

Seraphine.

My officially betrothed princess.

Elira.

Lyriel.

Mira.

My hoped-for future wives if the empire eventually stops screaming about the paperwork.

My family gone only minutes.

Their food still warm.

Their gifts scattered around me.

Lucian's little carved Fia standing defiantly on the bedside table.

"I think so."

Mira takes my hand.

"You don't sound sure."

"I..."

I laugh weakly.

"I woke up expecting everyone to hate me."

No one interrupts.

"I thought I was supposed to be this villainess who ruined everything."

Seraphine's expression tightens.

"A woman destined to lose every route."

Lyriel watches me carefully.

"And now..."

I look toward the door.

"My mother told me to plan for next year."

The words break slightly.

"And I realized I want to."

Silence.

Then Seraphine takes my other hand.

"I want next year too."

Elira rises.

"And the one after."

Mira smiles through wet eyes.

"And the one after that."

Lyriel closes her notebook.

"For once, I agree with the sentimental majority."

I laugh.

She looks at me.

"I'm serious."

Her voice softens.

"I intend to make your diagnosis regret meeting me."

"That's extremely romantic."

"I know."

Elira settles one hand over my ankle beneath the blankets.

"We'll fight."

"Everything?"

"Everything."

Seraphine leans closer.

"Your illness."

Mira:

"Your fear."

Lyriel:

"Bad medical theory."

Elira:

"Anyone who annoys us."

"That's broad."

"I'm flexible."

I laugh again.

It becomes a yawn.

Mira points immediately.

"Sleep."

"Bossy."

"Sleep."

I settle deeper into the pillows.

Mother's blankets are heavy around me.

Safe.

The HUD appears.

Softly this time.

No joke.

No dramatic warning.

Just words.

Chance of Success: UNKNOWN

The final line flickers.

Then changes.

Reason to Try: Increasing.

My eyes sting.

"Okay."

Seraphine brushes hair away from my forehead.

"Okay what?"

I dismiss the window.

"Nothing."

She gives me the look that says she knows that's a lie.

But she doesn't push.

Instead she kisses my forehead.

Mira pulls the blankets higher.

Elira dims the lamps.

Lyriel closes the curtains.

My eyes drift shut.

Not because I've collapsed.

Not because my body has failed.

Just because I'm tired.

And for once, sleep doesn't feel like surrender.

It feels like something ordinary.

Something people do because they expect to wake up tomorrow.

I hold onto that thought.

Tomorrow.

Ardentis.

My room waiting for me.

A wedding that may involve enough legal paperwork to kill several ministers.

Mira's unfinished shawl.

Lucian's terrible little carving.

Another ball.

Another year.

Maybe another decade.

I don't know how much of it I'll get.

But somewhere between Dawnridge, four impossible women, a ballroom full of fire-roses, and my mother feeding me soup like I was still a little girl—

I stopped merely trying not to die.

I started making plans.

Outside, the evening light turns the windows red and gold.

And just before sleep takes me, the system gives one quiet final message.

FIRE Parameter Updated.

Previous Interpretation: Everything you love can burn.

The words flicker.

Then rewrite themselves.

New Interpretation: A flame protected by many hands is harder to extinguish.

I smile into the pillow.

Maybe the system is finally learning something too.

Then, surrounded by the people who refused to let my story end where it was supposed to—

I fall asleep dreaming of home.
