The shelter had been like a small heaven for people trying to survive the brutal snowstorm. If the only ones living there had been Roxanna and her husbands, they could have lived quite comfortably, maybe playing cards together and even growing plants with hydroponics.
[I know some of them would definitely argue,] Roxanna thought. [But at least none of them would cut off my fingers or sabotage all of my supplies!]
Calen clenched his teeth the moment he heard her words. He already knew about the cruel things her ex-husband had done to her, but hearing them still made his chest burn.
Every time he thought about how this gentle, kind Roxanna had suffered so much, anger inevitably surged in his chest. If he could step into her old world, the first thing he would do would be to hunt down her ex-husband, skin him alive, and throw him to a pack of hungry dogs.
"I wish the same thing too," said Calen softly.
