Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: Chaplain

It's been two years since I first used magic yet I haven't felt much improvement. Within the first year of learning magic I felt a lot of improvement yet I have no idea what to do next. While I know all the ranks I don't really know how to improve upon them and how to upgrade to the next level. I should probably consult my mother seeing as she is a Bishop Energy mage.

Avery: Mother! Mother! Where are you?

Mother: Avery? What is it!

Avery: Can you help me out, recently I've felt stumped in my training.

Mother: Hm, I see. Have you tried ranking up?

Avery: Is there a specific way I'm supposed to go about ranking up or?

Mother: Duh! You've read our books on magic right? If you can perform a Chaplain level water spell in front of an official from the society they rank you up. Lucky for you I have the privilege to do that for you.

Avery: Um alright but what is the next spell?

Mother: Read your damn book! It tells you!

Avery: I did! It only teaches me basic spells!

Mother: Huh? Hand me that.

My mother snatched the book and proceeded to read it quietly. She then began to flip through the pages like a madman before sighing. She looked up at me, her slightly angry expression turned into a soft one.

Mother: It seems you haven't been given the Chaplain book yet. I will fetch it for you.

Dashing up the stairs and into the Library she rummaged around. Mother said she got the Mage, Chaplain and Eredict books but I only got books about Mage water spells and other books about casting and manuals. It seems she has more with her but forgot to give me the next one up? I heard a thump as she ran out carrying two new books.

Mother: Once you can cast a spell from this book then show me and you can fully learn the rest of it.

Avery: Thank you!

Jackpot. This was what I needed. I quickly dashed out heading straight for the hill. It should be easier to learn these spells compared to the Mage spells because I have a hang for magic now. I put the two new books on top of my old three and began flipping through. The spells looked similar to the old ones.

Magic in this world is a lot different to what I expected it to be. For instance in this world the stronger the mage you are depends on how much mana you can let through your body. Training mana flow is practically impossible so the only way to get better is by learning new spells which require more mana flow and practicing that is what helps you improve your magical abilities.

Something that doesn't really line up with the books though is the stagnation with the beginning. It's said that all early mages struggle with running out of mana and the excessive overuse of mana can cause your body to shut down permanently. It's called mana poisoning but so far I haven't seen any potential mana poisoning. I've definitely been pushing it beyond what is suggested.

It says that all mages can only produce about four Mage ranked spells per day within the first three years without running the risk of mana poisoning but I've used about three times that amount of spells in my first two years. It's most likely that I'm running the risk of mana poisoning and that four is just the safe point. That means you can go higher but if you do then you can risk mana poisoning.

I don't feel any sort of strain so I should be safe for now but that is kind of scary. Anyway I should focus on this Chaplain spell. It doesn't look very hard. Creating a water bubble that's about the size of a room would cost a fair bit of mana but it shouldn't be too hard. I began to charge up my mana while in thought.

Also since I've gotten better I need bigger bodies of water to channel magic into. That's why I upgraded to using this giant bucket. It's about the size of a bathtub but I just had my dad carry it out. It was pretty funny to watch him squirm to lift it up but he somehow managed to carry it down our hill and up my training hill in less then an hour. He's pretty strong, if I'm being honest. I'm not too familiar with weapon rankings but I have sort of an idea from my lessons.

There are about seven ranks and you can gain mastery in each weapon. My father mentioned a woman from Verona who got two weapons to the highest rank, a bow and crossbow. The ranks are: Basic, Advanced, Bronze, Silver, Gold, Master and Grandmaster. So it is similar to magic in a way.

Ok! Time to cast the spell. My hand was fully charged with mana, time to let it out. Aiming upon the giant bucket I propelled mana into it, it slowly absorbed as I began to lift it upwards. Next I started shaping it. Rounding it out as it formed a sphere and finally shooting it out. I swished my hand outwards propelling a mana burst as it shot out.

The bubble went flying through the sky, it wasn't as fast as my smaller water attacks but it was bigger and with the amount of mana I put into it, it's bound to hurt a lot.The bubble finally lost its moment in the middle of the field, flying down the aqua bubble began to lose its shape. Swishing around like an obtuse spit bubble violently propelling itself downwards. Then it splashed. Water flung upwards, an array of blue hues flew across the air before nose diving and evaporating.

That was the power of just a Chaplain spell? Holy crap! I stood there in amazement before letting out a giant yell of celebration.

Avery: I'm the Water King, Motherfucker!
