Chapter 2 - Ch 2. The Hum that Carries Weight

BOOM!

The first sound was produced. Through that sound came a hum. From the first flash to show it self, energy morphed. Twisting and turning, slowly converging into one place.

Sounds rang, hymns and chants blasted around making everything around tremble as to what was to come.

Through vibrations a figure slowly manifested itself into existence. Slow at first then still. Once again a hum produced itself accelerating the beings growth. Once again stillness. Then again another hum. The pattern repeated itself again and again. Time passed, in human terms a year, then two, then three. For us it might have been years but for this being it had only been a second.

__________

Years pass. An energy ball so small to the scale of the universe but massive to the human eye was seen condensing, swelling, twisting, and turning. Till finally it all ceased.

One second, two then three, nothing… Suddenly, a deafening explosion rang out and at the center of it a small figure of an infant came into existence. For a split second you could hear the sound of every musical note and instrument ever created. Should have been chaotic but some way or another it sounded harmonized, perfect.

With his birth came a deafening name that spread out to the far reaches of the universe

"Eranthis Rauk Imu Kôrath".

Finally the first Elder Eldritch has been born. Born to the existence of sound itself. However, he was not the only one who was created, countless other eldritch horrors came to fruition. Nyarlathotep, a name of chaos, rang out. A messenger for the outer eldritch gods in the near future. Azathoth, Cthulhu, Shub-Niggurath, and Hastur. Known as the great old ones. Later bringing chaos to all corners of life.

Name after name was shot across the universe letting everyone know the game has just begun.

But not all were chaos, names of the divine started to shout out one after another. Yog-Sothoth, while not good in a sense, wasn't considered evil, more on the neutral side of things. Then names of familiarity. Destiny, Dream, Destruction, Desire, Despair, Delight later for unknown reasons changed her name to Delirium, and finally Death.

Birth after birth, name after name, some known, some lost to time forgotten or just never let themselves be known to us.

This was the beginning.

__________

Countless years pass.

In a dark void, specks of light splattered around as if someone threw glitter everywhere. Sat a man flouting in space.

The space around him was vibrating and twisting. If one was to see this they would witness wave after wave being pushed and pulled into him. But something was off with the waves; it was almost as if they bounced back once it reached a certain range. One thing was clear: this was not of his own volition.

His name was Eranthis Rauk Imu Kôrath. The originator of sound and the first Eldritch god. No longer just the infant from the beginning of time. Now an older man with medium length black hair tied up in a bun at the back with short hair for sides. Dark blue eyes with white lines in the shape of waves. Dressed in a black tux with a white loose undershirt, tie missing.

Around him float instruments of all varieties from guitars to pianos, drums to hurdy gurdy. Every instrument you can think of lay around him.

Some might think he is "perfect" by his looks alone but if one was to look closely they would notice that is not true. The waves that radiate off him are slow and quiet. Almost as if they are not moving at all.

If you were to look even closer to his eyes the waves are moving at a snail's pace, almost stagnant. A profound loneliness with a hint of something close to rage radiates off him for miles. Even the melodies that are heard are almost nonexistent.

__________

"This is ridiculous," he muttered to himself.

His voice, sometimes gentle and other times melodic, sounded with irritation. "How long has it been? Stuck here millennium after millennium."

The irritation morphed into rage. "All because of one sound. ONE! Stuck here like a caged rat." His voice rose louder and louder.

"The so called GREAT ONES. I am stuck here because of them."

His voice finally reached the peak. "We all were created at the same time. Our powers are almost equal, why is it me that you all decided to gang up on. Was it because I was first?"

Wave after wave of vocal force bouncing around distorting space itself. If a being of any kind was to step close to him they would evaporate instantly.

"Is it because I can use your own sound against you? Do you all think you aren't just as powerful as me?" Silence. "ANSWER ME!" Yet no one responded, only a long silence. Knowing the Great Ones are long gone, haven't been around for millennia.

After a few minutes of nothing he lets out a sigh. Anger subsiding, twisting into annoyance. "He is too dangerous, they say. Seal him away, they say… Bullshit."

He clenched his fist. Then relaxed while muttering "cowards, the lot of them all a bunch of cowards."

Taking a deep breath he finally relaxes, tension fading as if it was never there.

After one last sigh he whispers. "How much longer am I going to be trapped in this bird cage?"

A few seconds go by and the next thing heard was a quiet "Hmph" as he kicks the void as if kicking a pebble on the side of the road. Leading him to a slow uncontrollable spin in space. Muttering "Shit." as he flails around trying to stabilize himself in zero gravity.

He was trapped.

Trapped and slowly spinning…

__________

Years pass.

In the quiet void, a melody was playing. The sound of a piano and violin.

("Cold" by Jorge Mendez)

Erik sat before the piano he had shaped from the void itself. It wasn't real, couldn't be real, not in a place, a cage, where nothing entered or exited unless he willed it into being. Yet when his fingers brushed the keys, the instrument answered with a sound so heavy with sorrow that it seemed almost impossible it came from one being alone.

He exhaled slowly. Then began to play.

The first notes were soft, like the note was trying to cling itself into existence. Sound trembled as the notes drifted towards emptiness, thin strands of sound searching for something, anything. The melody dipped and rose, each note carrying a weight that space could not muffle. Regret, longing, exhaustion. It was as if every key he pressed passed along a little about himself. Emotions suppressed from millennia of isolation.

Erik's shoulders arched forward as he played, eyelids lowered, unfocused. He wasn't looking at the piano. He wasn't looking at anything. Only the emptiness of the void. His fingers moved on their own.

Loneliness, an emotion buried so long it had become its own form of gravity.

Then came the violin stringing on its own playing with pin point accuracy along with him. A hollow sound almost like despair strung along, getting more pronounced the longer the song went on.

The middle section of the piece flowed echoing into the empty space. Exposing him, betraying how desperately he wanted someone to hear him. For someone to answer. The chords stretched, reaching toward depths that should have not existed, then collapsed.

He paused only once, his hand hovering over the keys.

"Still here," he murmured to himself.

His voice sounded small.

Then the finale began. Slow, breaking at the edges. The notes came, tears fell, each one landing like shattered glass. There was no joy, no hope written into the music. Only the simple, crushing truth of an existence who had been alone far too long.

By the last chord, Erik's hands were shaking, whether from anger, sorrow, or simple exhaustion, he couldn't tell. The sound drifted outward, fading into the void.

Silence

No applause

Silence

No echo

Just Silence

No presence but his own.

Erik lowered his head over the keys, letting his hair fall forward like a curtain. Hair bun forgotten.

"I miss people I've never even met," he whispered.

Hey guys, I hope you enjoyed it. I hope you all understand, the beginning will be a little slow. I'm trying to get the hang of writing. I'm happy I could at least get a real chapter out on the first day. Let me know what you guys think. Am I doing anything wrong or something doesn't make sense? I tried hard to make this at least somewhat enjoyable. I mean I stayed up longer than I should have. Got to go to work in 6 hours. Well wee you all tomorrow.

Also, Some clarification.

" " - someone's talking

' ' - someone's thinking

______ - Scene change
