Chapter 1 - Welcome to Gioia Tauro

Wow, your story is off to a

Zara's POV*

I stepped out of the taxi and gazed up at the city skyline. Gioia Tauro, the city of my dreams. "This is my first time in Gioia Tauro city," I whispered to myself, feeling a mix of excitement and nervousness.

"Sono finalmente nella mia città dei sogni!" I exclaimed, unable to contain my excitement. A few passersby turned to look at me, but I didn't care. I was finally free from my uncle and his toxic wife, who had made my life a living hell.

I pulled out my phone to call my best friend, Mari, but she wasn't answering. I had no idea where I was, and the unfamiliar streets seemed to stretch out endlessly. Suddenly, someone grabbed me from behind, and a voice whispered, "Don't move, or I'll shoot."

My heart racing, I remembered Mari's warning about this city: gangs, thieves, criminals, and mafia bosses. Was this really happening to me, just as I arrived?

But then, the person burst out laughing, and I knew exactly who it was.

"What was that, Mari? You scared the devil out of me, girl!" I turned to face her, trying to sound angry.

Mari chuckled and helped me with my luggage. "That's a perfect welcome, Zara. Trust me, you'll get used to it soon. Just give it a few days, amor."

I raised an eyebrow. "A few days? Get used to what, exactly? The crime? The violence?"

Mari shot me a warning look. "Shut up, Zara. Stop asking so many questions. You'll be fine."

We arrived at her apartment, and she tossed my luggage inside. I winced as my belongings scattered across the floor.

"Hey, be careful with my stuff!" I protested.

Mari's expression turned icy. "Don't call me a dumb ass, you idiot."

I took a step back, but then we both burst out laughing. The tension was broken, and we ended up giggling in the kitchen.

Once we'd calmed down, Mari sat me down and took my hands. "Listen, Zara, this city isn't like anything you've seen on TV. Crime is common here. Killing is just a normal day in Gioia. The police... well, they don't really do much."

I felt a shiver run down my spine. Why would Mari live in a city like this? She seemed so calm, so nonchalant.
