Chapter 26 - Shadows on the Streets

The afternoon sun was fading, casting long, soft shadows over Kisaragi City. Yuma walked beside Renji, hands shoved deep in his jacket pockets, kicking at loose pebbles on the cracked pavement. The two had just left school, the streets buzzing with the usual after-class chatter, the hum of bicycles, and the distant roar of cars on the avenue.

Renji, taller by a head and always one step slower in thought than Yuma, kept talking about something trivial—a rumor about a new café opening near the station. Yuma only half-listened, his mind drifting, replaying the small gestures of the day: the way Renji laughed at some dumb joke, the way his bag hung off one shoulder, the casual rhythm of their steps.

He hated to admit it, but he enjoyed these little moments. The calm before life inevitably got messy.

"Yuma, you're quiet," Renji said, glancing at him with that lopsided grin. "Did I say something funny?"

"Nah," Yuma muttered, shrugging. "Just tired, I guess."

Renji snorted. "You're always tired. Ever think about sleeping earlier?"

"I like walking," Yuma said simply. He didn't mention the way his chest still thumped with that weird fire feeling whenever he moved, the energy he couldn't explain, the part of him that felt… different.

They turned down a narrow alleyway, the shortcut that cut through a quieter part of the city. Usually empty, the alley smelled faintly of damp concrete and the leftover tang of street food. The sun had nearly disappeared, leaving an orange glow at the horizon, and the streetlights flickered on one by one, humming like a warning.

"That shortcut's kind of sketchy," Renji said, pausing. "We should stick to the main road—"

Before he could finish, a low, guttural sound echoed from the shadows. Something moved. Fast. Wrong.

Yuma froze. His instincts screamed.

Renji's hand shot out, gripping Yuma's sleeve. "Did you hear that?"

"I did," Yuma said, his voice calm but tight. His body coiled like a spring, senses sharpening, every hair on his arms standing. The fire inside him stirred, not visible, not literal yet, but a pulse that made his fingers tingle.

From the darkness ahead, a figure emerged. At first, it looked human—ragged clothes, hunched posture. Then the face twisted. Not human anymore. The eyes glowed faintly red. The jaw seemed… wrong, too wide, too sharp, as if the shadows themselves had reshaped it.

Renji froze, horror overtaking his words. "Yuma… what is that?"

"I don't know," Yuma replied, taking a step forward, a strange mix of curiosity and tension knotting his stomach. He wanted to move, to react, but something told him this was… serious.

The creature lunged.

Renji screamed and tried to shield Yuma, but the being was too fast. Too strong. In an instant, the alley became chaos—Renji thrown aside like a ragdoll, his scream cut short by the snap of something breaking.

Yuma's eyes narrowed. The fire inside surged, heat and instinct mingling into motion. He moved faster than his legs should have allowed, the energy pushing him beyond ordinary speed.

But it was too late for Renji.

Yuma lunged toward the creature, swinging his fists, trying to drive it back. He landed a blow that should have staggered a normal human, but the thing barely flinched. Its gaze snapped to him, red eyes narrowing, teeth bared in a predator's grin.

"No…" Yuma breathed, heart hammering. He couldn't think clearly—only feel. The power inside him was alive, restless, demanding action, but he hesitated.

And when he turned, Renji was gone.

The space where his brother had been collapsed was empty, save for a smear of blood on the alley wall. A metallic scent hit Yuma's nose, sharp, impossible to ignore.

"Renji…" he whispered, dropping to his knees. Rage and helplessness warred inside him, a storm coiling around his chest. His hands were shaking, fingers curling into fists.

The creature hissed, crouched, ready to strike again. Yuma's instinct screamed at him to fight, to burn, to end this. And for the first time, he let the fire rise—not flames, not yet, but the surge of speed, strength, reflex, the raw force that had always been part of him but never fully tested.

The alley seemed to slow. Yuma's punches struck faster, more precise. He wasn't thinking; he was reacting. Every muscle, every nerve, every ounce of the fire within him responded perfectly.

But the creature was clever. It dodged, it twisted, it attacked from angles that defied logic. And through it all, Yuma's mind kept flashing back to Renji's laugh, his stupid jokes, his warm smile. The weight of loss settled heavy, heavier than anything he had felt before.

He swung with everything he had, finally knocking the thing back against the wall. It screeched, a sound that made his teeth ache. Yuma's breathing was ragged, sweat slick on his skin, chest heaving. The fire inside him burned hotter, demanding release.

Then, a figure appeared at the alley entrance—a tall man in a black suit, calm, authoritative. A badge glinted on his chest.

"Step back," the man said, voice low but commanding. "We handle this from here."

Yuma froze, chest still pounding. The creature, sensing more danger, hissed one last time before dissolving into shadows, slipping away.

The man approached Yuma, hand outstretched. "Are you injured?"

Yuma shook his head, voice tight. "He… my friend…"

The man's eyes softened for a moment, then hardened again. "I understand. Come with me. You're not safe here. Not anymore."

Yuma looked back at the alley, at the spot where Renji had fallen. Anger, grief, and something darker mingled in his chest. He took a deep breath and followed the man, knowing that nothing—nothing—would ever be the same.

And in that moment, Yuma Kisaragi's path was set.

The world had just shown him its teeth, and he had barely dodged the bite.
