He wanted Tobby to understand that they were from completely different worlds, and he wanted those around them to feel the same.
In Tobby's behavior, Roger felt he had succeeded. He aimed to make Tobby unable to find a voice in any aspect, to make him feel embarrassed or inferior, and to realize that he and Emily Thomas were not from the same world, making him retreat willingly.
