Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: Attempting Chidori, A Failed First Step

Chapter 40: Attempting Chidori, A Failed First Step

After spending another day at Heaven Dou Royal Academy, Yu Tianlin had already become familiar with the members of the future Royal Dou battle team. At the same time, his two day break was drawing to an end.

During this period, he had tried several times to chat with Dugu Yan about poison, hoping to naturally steer the topic toward medicinal herbs, and from there to immortal herbs.

However, Yu Tianlin quickly realized that while Dugu Yan was extremely knowledgeable about the venom of the Jade Phosphor Serpent and knew a fair amount about other toxins, her understanding of herbs was limited.

Aside from a few common medicinal plants used to stop bleeding or treat colds, she could not recognize much else. It was obvious that Dugu Yan had almost no interest in herbs at all.

Thinking about it carefully, this actually made sense.

If Dugu Yan had liked studying herbs, Dugu Bo would have taken her to the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well long ago. He would not have ended up handing all the immortal herbs over to Tang San in the original story.

It seems I still have to find another way to deal with the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well.

After returning to Thunder Academy, Yu Tianlin's formal school life finally began.

He attended classes every morning. At night, he cultivated his Spirit power by drawing lightning to temper his ring. The only problem was the free time in the afternoon.

He had absolutely nothing to do. It was unbearably boring.

Other students could use the afternoon to spar and exchange pointers, improving their combat experience. Yu Tianlin, however, could only watch from the side. He could not use his martial soul or Spirit skills at all.

Using the afternoons for meditation and cultivating Spirit power was not ideal either.

If you meditated too much during the day, your cultivation efficiency would fall sharply.

This rule, summarized by countless generations of Spirit Masters, was taught even in basic Spirit Master academies. The most efficient daily meditation time was roughly six to eight hours. That was how one maximized gains. It did not mean you could skyrocket your Spirit power by cultivating nonstop for twenty four hours without eating or drinking.

Then I should forget about visiting Cousin Yu Tianxin for now.

My big brother is chasing his cultivation progress relentlessly, so Yu Tianxin is under heavy pressure too, training hard every day. I should not go and distract him.

If sparring is not an option, and I cannot just meditate mindlessly either, what am I supposed to do with my afternoons?

I cannot just wander around with nothing to do. That would make me no different from those spoiled brats at Heaven Dou Royal Academy.

Remembering those idiots he had met on the mountain steps, Yu Tianlin felt irritated.

Those small fry would be easy to handle if he were allowed to go all out. He could drop the whole group in a few moves. But once they released their martial souls and he could not use his own martial soul or Spirit skills, they suddenly became troublesome. In the end, he had been forced to rely on his guard to clean up the mess.

If I run into that kind of trash again, do I have to ask my guard to take action every time? That is way too annoying.

Unwilling to accept that, Yu Tianlin fell into deep thought. Things definitely could not go on like this.

Even though he could not use his martial soul or Spirit skills, using pure Spirit power was not a problem.

Could he create a Spirit skill of his own using Spirit power alone?

Decision made, he immediately put thoughts into action.

He was bored every afternoon anyway. Now he finally had something meaningful to do.

Back in his single dormitory room, Yu Tianlin locked the door, then began to seriously think about developing a self created Spirit skill.

If your Spirit power was of the lightning attribute, what kind of skill should you create?

Naturally, Yu Tianlin thought of Chidori from Naruto.

In his previous life, he had really enjoyed Naruto, and he was especially familiar with Sasuke's iconic skill.

The so called Chidori gathered a high intensity electric current in the palm. The powerful stimulation of the current would greatly enhance the activity of the hand, making it harder and sharper, like a sword that could cut through iron as if it were mud. At the same time, it boosted the speed of the thrust.

Because the crackling of the concentrated lightning sounded like a thousand birds chirping, the move was called Chidori.

Chidori was a very practical technique.

If converted into the system of Douluo Continent, it would be a Spirit skill that enhanced both attack power and speed. Exactly how much it could increase them was unknown, but it would definitely not be low.

If he could successfully develop it, it might even be more useful than the Thunder Dragon Claw granted by his thousand year Spirit Ring, and it could probably rival his Dragon Transformation Right Arm.

Since the goal was clear, the next step was simple. Keep trying.

Yu Tianlin directly released his Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon martial soul and activated his Dragon Transformation Right Arm.

That was right, such experiments had to be done in dragon form.

He had not forgotten the miserable state of his left arm being eroded by lightning when he fought the Thunder Hell Prison Vine two years ago.

Developing Chidori required concentrating a high intensity current in his palm. If he lost control and the current exploded, the consequences would be disastrous.

After transforming his arm into a dragon claw, however, its durability doubled. Even if something went wrong, the damage would be much smaller.

Looking at his dragon transformed right arm wrapped by two purple Spirit Rings, Yu Tianlin gritted his teeth. He channeled his lightning attribute Spirit power into the dragon claw, then carefully tried to generate lightning from within.

"Sizzle."

A weak arc of electricity slid across the surface of the dragon claw. There was no pain, no itch, not even numbness. It was as if nothing had happened.

No good. This current is way too weak. Looks like I am being too cautious.

With that thought, Yu Tianlin decided to increase the intensity of the current just a little.

"Sizzle."

This time, the lightning instantly erupted.

The sudden burst of dazzling electric light almost blinded Yu Tianlin. It did not remain contained within his palm. The entire dragon transformed right arm was struck by the surging current and began to spasm wildly. A moment of numbness was followed by intense, tearing pain.

"Damn, that hurts!"

He hurriedly cut off the flow of Spirit power. The lightning scattered, and his right arm returned to its normal dragon transformed state.

However, the scales were now pitch black from the electric burn, with the dragon claws suffering the worst damage. A faint smell of char hung in the air.

Logically speaking, if that level of lightning came from an external attack, it should not have been able to damage his Dragon Transformation Right Arm at all.

But he had generated this powerful current from inside the arm, which was essentially self harm. Even his dragon transformed arm could not endure that.

Thankfully, he had been cautious enough to conduct the experiment in dragon form.

If his right arm had still been in a human state, that one attempt might have completely destroyed it.

Self created Spirit skills are dangerous. I have to be more careful.

I only increased the intensity a tiny bit, but it went completely out of control. It seems my control over lightning is still terribly weak.

Right now, though, this was not the main issue. Treating his injured arm came first.

With that in mind, Yu Tianlin immediately canceled his Dragon Transformation, withdrew his martial soul, smashed open the dormitory door, and sprinted straight toward the academy infirmary.

Although his injuries were quite serious, this was Thunder Academy.

The teachers in the infirmary had rich experience in treating lightning related injuries. Since Yu Tianlin had arrived in time, there were no permanent sequelae.

Even so, the doctor still wrapped his right arm in thick bandages and sternly warned him not to use it for at least a week.

This is absolutely infuriating.

Yu Tianlin had only wanted to experiment a little. He had not expected it to turn out like this. It was a disaster of a first attempt.

Looks like I cannot continue with this for now. It is too dangerous.

My control over lightning attribute Spirit power is way too poor. I cannot accurately regulate the current. Even if I try a few more times, the result will probably be the same.

I should focus on improving my control over lightning first.

As for training methods, I will just borrow the tree climbing and water walking practices from Naruto.

One emphasizes focused control, the other emphasizes balance and stability.

If I can complete both using lightning attribute Spirit power, my control will improve greatly, and only then will it be truly safe to explore Chidori again.
