Chapter 20 - The Father, The Son, and The Scylla Agent

The Flight of Treachery

Maya clutched the logbook and the vial, the turbulence of the helicopter matching the chaos in her heart. Adrian's father, Adrian King Sr., the esteemed founder of the empire, was the real villain. He hadn't just covered up a crime; he had financed the biological research and forced Elara King into exile.

The harsh truth settled in: Adrian wasn't staging a hostile takeover; he was unknowingly on an assassination mission against his father's legacy, using the very company his father built to do it.

Maya realized she couldn't share this news over a satellite phone. The information was too explosive, too personal, and too risky to reveal unless she was face-to-face with Adrian. She completely trusted him, but the damage this truth could cause to the carefully controlled man was unimaginable.

"We have visual confirmation on Mr. King," Zara's voice broke through the comms. "He's at the rendezvous point. We're diverting to pick him up."

Ten minutes later, the helicopter descended into a remote clearing. Adrian emerged from the trees, muddy and disheveled, but unhurt. He moved with the focused, exhausted energy of a man who had faced darkness and fought a monster.

He climbed into the cabin, his eyes immediately searching for Maya. He pulled her into a tight, overwhelming embrace, relief washing away his control.

"Are you safe? The EMP? The cuff? Did you touch the stabilizer?" he asked, scanning her face.

"I'm fine. The EMP pulse worked, but I didn't touch the stabilizer," Maya whispered, pulling back just enough to see him. "I have the vial. I have the logbook. The containment is stable for now."

Adrian squeezed her shoulder, his eyes shining with pride and relief. "You are amazing, Maya. You saved the island. Now, tell me what you found. What is the Scylla Unit?"

The Confrontation

Maya set aside the presence of Zara and Garrick, knowing the significance of her disclosure went beyond operational security. She handed Adrian the cryo-vial.

"It's a bioluminescent agent that creates a localized EMP and, when aerosolized, induces complete mental compliance," Maya explained quickly. "It's a mind-control weapon. Vance used environmental cover for two decades."

Adrian looked at the vial, his expression shifting to grim satisfaction. "Biological warfare. It confirms the threat level. We have the motive and the means to destroy Vance's reputation. This is enough to finalize everything."

"Adrian, stop," Maya interrupted, placing her hand over the logbook. "This isn't about Vance anymore. Vance was just a pawn. He was protecting his financial backer."

She slowly opened the logbook to the page with the crossed-out financial transfer.

"Vance was right about his founder," Maya said gently, her heart heavy for the storm she was about to unleash. "He was correct that Elara King was running a separate investigation. She wasn't looking into *Vance's* company. She was investigating a silent partner."

Adrian's intense blue eyes narrowed, his control snapping back into place. "Speak plainly, Maya. Who was the partner?"

Maya pointed to the shell company name: K. I. Holdings, Ltd.**

"This shell corporation financed the entire Scylla operation from the beginning. They provided the initial money and political support. This shell corporation is a subsidiary of King Industries. The only person who would have had the authority and access to make this transfer twenty years ago, then cover it up, was the founder."

She locked eyes with him, delivering the final, crushing blow. "Your father, Adrian. **Adrian King Sr. was the true creator of the Scylla Agent. Your mother fled to save you from him."

The revelation hit Adrian like a physical blow. Silence filled the cabin, broken only by the rhythmic *thump* of the rotors. Adrian didn't explode, didn't shout. The color drained from his face, leaving his skin stretched tight over his bones. His expression reflected pure, devastating betrayal. The foundation of his entire life—his loyalty, his drive, his vengeance—was built on a lie crafted by the man he idolized.

"No," Adrian finally replied, the word a dry, guttural rasp. "My father was a visionary. He built this company on integrity. He would never..."

"He built the company on control," Maya corrected gently yet firmly. "The same cold, perfect control you inherited. He used it to finance a bioweapons program and silence his wife when she tried to expose him."

She pushed the logbook into his hands, forcing him to see the evidence. Adrian stared at the page, the intricate corporate deceit, and the undeniable proof of his father's betrayal. The very man he sought revenge against was the one who had shattered his family's peace.

The Counter-Strike

Before Adrian could fully grasp the shattering truth, the emergency satellite phone chimed. It was an encrypted, high-priority alert.

Adrian stared at the screen, his control crumbling. Maya reached out and took the phone.

The message was brief, devastating, and sent directly from King Industries' central server:

*IMMEDIATE HOSTILE TAKEOVER IN PROGRESS. THE KING INDUSTRIES BOARD IS CALLING AN EMERGENCY VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE ON A. KING JR. SIGNED: A. KING SR. (CHAIRMAN EMERITUS).

The silence in the helicopter was washed away by a wave of dread. Adrian King Sr., the Chairman Emeritus, had acted first. He hadn't waited for his son to return from the Galapagos. He knew the merger was nearing completion, which would put pressure on Aethel—and on him. By calling a no-confidence vote, he aimed to strip his son of the CEO title and the power to finalize the Aethel acquisition. He was removing his only threat and protecting his legacy in one ruthless, dangerous act.

Adrian finally spoke, his voice dangerously low, his eyes fixed on the distant horizon.

"He knew. He's been tracking my every move, waiting for me to leave the command center. He's exploiting the power vacuum. He's trying to protect his crime."

He looked at Maya, the raw betrayal hardening into focused, deadly resolve. "He played the long game, but I'm the one holding the evidence, and I'm the one who controls the final vote. We're flying straight to New York. Maya, call the board members. Tell them I have information that will dismantle the entire King legacy. This is no longer a hostile takeover. **This is a family war."

Adrian slammed his hand down on the comms panel, ordering the pilot to full speed.

"We have to beat him to the vote," he declared. "If he wins, he buries the Scylla agent forever, and we lose everything. We need to expose him. We need to win the vote."

He was back in the fight, but this time, the enemy was his blood, and the stakes were the future of his own empire.

Will Adrian and Maya make it back to New York in time to stop Adrian Sr.'s vote, and what final, treacherous act will the Chairman commit to ensure his victory and silence the logbook forever?
