"You didn't just flatten my little kitty into a pancake, did you?" Ember asked, eyeing the epicenter of the explosion.
"In your heart, am I that brutal?" Star shot him a sidelong look.
"I didn't say that."
Star huffed, then scanned the battlefield.
"This fight's kind of wild."
"Which is why we're here to break it up," Ember said.
"Wanna make it interesting?" Star suddenly suggested.
"Oh? What're we betting?"
"Who convinces more people to stop fighting. How about it?"
"You're an alien bullying a local bumpkin, huh?"
"Just say yes or no."
"Sure. Why not? What do I get if I win?"
"If you lose, you do one thing I ask. Deal?"
"Better not be something weird."
"I'm a girl and I'm not scared. What're you scared of?"
"Guys have to protect themselves out there too, you know!"
They didn't lower their voices at all.
Even amid the chaos, people looked up at them.
The dust cleared as if blown away by a giant fan.
Rosmontis tilted her head up, staring at Star.
The three greatswords that had been pressing Patriot swung up together—
And shot toward the two of them.
It was like a starting gun.
A greatsword and a bat flashed into Star and Ember's hands.
They moved as one, smashing two swords away—
Then both reached out and caught the third.
"Does an elite like this count as one person?" Ember asked.
"Count her as ten!" Star grinned.
Together they heaved and hurled the sword back.
It slammed into the ground, kicking up smoke.
And in that same beat, the two leapt down from above—
Landing heavily in the rubble.
They launched into the crowd.
Ember swung his greatsword like a paddle, knocking enemies out with the flat of the blade.
Star simply reached forward and clenched her fist.
Before the armored operators could react, their own weapons twisted around and smashed into them, dropping a whole swath at once.
Ember yelled, "Oh come on—that's cheating!"
"What do you mean cheating? That's my power!" Star snapped back.
"Relax, Ember. I'll use you properly."
"I'm not holding back either."
He was so irritated he laughed.
But his sword never slowed.
Wherever he moved, bodies fell.
Rosmontis tried to seize control of her four blades again—
Only to find something fighting her for them.
Star's golden pupils flared as she smiled brightly.
"Little kitty, look at big sis~"
Patriot watched the two new arrivals in silence.
"Who... are they? Why are they here?"
He didn't know.
But Rhodes Island was their target.
That made these two— allies.
Patriot raised his halberd high.
Like a general issuing the order, his roar rolled across the warzone.
"Comrades! Warriors! The time to strike back is now!"
A thunderous cheer answered him.
Reunion's morale surged.
And Ember met his own "hero unit."
Logos.
The Banshee lord looked no different from the other controlled operators—eyes hollow, expression blank.
But his Arts didn't stop.
Spells poured out like gunfire, raining toward Ember.
Ember's greatsword blurred, every swing cutting the spells apart.
He kept advancing, unbroken.
Realizing ordinary Arts couldn't slow him, Logos escalated.
The battlefield felt like it split open.
Countless golden glyphs swirled around Logos as his pen carved word after word into the air.
"I will toll the death knell for you."
The first words he'd spoken in the fight—and they weren't conversation.
They were death.
The golden words became blades, tearing through the air and striking at Ember.
Ember smashed one glyph—only to be launched backward more than ten meters by the force.
Behind him, Star's voice drifted over.
"Wow, Ember. You're kinda weak."
"Shut up!" he snapped.
At that moment, the assassin lurking in the shadows struck.
No one knew where she'd been hiding.
When she appeared, she was already behind Star.
Star whipped her bat around. "Been waiting for you!"
Before she could swing—
A towering figure swept in behind her.
Patriot's halberd scythed across the space the assassin occupied. She dodged with uncanny agility—
But the next second, Patriot shoved forward with his shield.
It smashed into her and sent her flying into a building.
"Don't lose focus on the battlefield," Patriot said plainly, marching back to the front.
"...Uh, thanks," Star muttered.
Ember had always admired Logos's strength.
Right now he just wanted to scream: Could you maybe not be this insane?!
Golden words were Logos's sword and shield.
Every time Ember closed in, the glyphs slammed him back.
"Guess I have to actually try," Ember said, golden pupils kindling in his eyes.
Heavy footsteps moved up to his side.
A low voice rumbled.
"I will block the Banshee's Arts."
"...Fine. I'll knock him out."
Logos's next barrage crashed into them.
Patriot stepped forward.
The golden words struck his shield—and couldn't move it an inch.
No.
They couldn't even slow his advance.
Patriot pushed forward like a mountain, forcing Logos back—
Logos's throat tightened, as if to speak another lethal word—
A flicker of light appeared behind him.
A teleportation miracle Ember had learned from Prince Lothric.
A miracle that used to take him seconds to cast.
Now it was instant.
Golden pupils blazing, Ember didn't pause.
Just before the golden words could pierce him—
He brought his greatsword down hard—
Right on Logos's head.
The strike slammed Logos into the ground and knocked him out cold.
