Chapter 31 - Chapter Thirty-Two — The Doctor

A door opened behind us.

Mara turned. I stepped in front of her, my claws emerging, my body coiling into a fighting stance.

A woman stood there. Late forties, gray hair pulled back in a severe bun, a white coat stained with old chemicals and older regrets. A pistol in her hand, steady and unafraid. She looked at us with eyes that had seen too much and still couldn't look away.

"Don't move," she said.

I raised my hands, but I didn't retract the claws.

"Who are you?"

"Dr. Elara Voss."

My eyes narrowed. "Related to Commander Voss?"

"My sister." She said it without emotion, a fact delivered like a diagnosis. "You worked here."

Elara nodded. "Before Rainbow buried this facility.

Before they decided the results were too unpredictable to control. Before they locked the doors and poured concrete over the truth."

I looked around at the tanks, the files, the ghosts.

"You know what happened to us?"

"I know what happened to the first generation." She looked at Mara, and something shifted in her eyes.

Recognition. Pity. Fear. "And the second?"

Elara stared at Mara. "You are the second."

Silence. The word hung in the air like smoke.

I stepped forward. "Fix her."

Elara lowered the gun. "I can't."

"Then tell me how."

"I don't know."

My claws appeared, black and glistening. A threat. A plea. "Tell me something useful."

Elara didn't flinch. "I wouldn't recommend threatening me."

"Why?"

"Because I'm the only person left who understands what is inside you. The only one who knows what the first Beast was. The only one who can tell you why you're still alive when every other subject died screaming."

I stopped. The claws hovered in the air between us.

Elara looked directly into my eyes. "Your body isn't infected."

I frowned. "Then what is it?"

"It has been rewritten. Down to the genetic level. The organism didn't invade you. It became you. Every cell, every strand of DNA, every memory in your muscle tissue. You aren't a host, Kael. You're a translation. A new language written in the alphabet of the old."
