Golden dawn light filters through the forest canopy above me, forcing my gaze upward. Centuries have passed since I last witnessed a sunrise beyond temple walls, and the sight irritates me. Too brilliant. Too full of life.

Behind me, the mortal's breathing creates a steady rhythm. Javier, he told me his name was.

He had refused to stop following me until exhaustion finally claimed him by our small fire. I should have abandoned him hours ago. Every instinct screamed at me to disappear into the shadows. Yet whenever I attempted to leave, something held me back. A subtle vibration in my chest, the whisper of his pulse somehow intertwined with mine.

This wouldn't mark the first time the Moon Goddess has bound me to a mate, but I swear it will be the final one.

As morning light touches his sleeping face, I examine him closely. The mortals from my memories bore no resemblance to this man.
