Chapter 1 - A World Built on Strength

The world of Vasil is one ruled by the strong. The only hierarchy that mattered and could withstand the test of time was one based on raw individual strength. Each nation in Vasil was led by a ruler of some kind, whether they be a king, a queen, an emperor, or an empress. Many among them could be called tyrants, despots, dictators, though some could also be called benevolent. Regardless of their individuality, they all shared one thing in common. Absolute strength. Their might was unrivaled within their nation, and it was only matched by the might of other rulers. It was no coincidence that every nation ended up like this. Over a millennia ago, the world was in a much different state. While there were many places ruled by kings or emperors, there were others led by groups of high-status individuals, be they councils, senates, or otherwise. This completely fell by the wayside on one fateful day.

The Blessing.

It was an event unlike any other. Strange energy engulfed the entire world, massive pillars of light descended from the sky, skewering the very world and permanently altering the world they struck. A once tropical region became frozen over, yet directly to the east, another area became molten, covered with lava and fire. Nature itself was uprooted, nothing made sense anymore for the people and even animals that lived there. As the environment's balance was upended, the people and animals fared no better. They merged with one another, creating hybrids, sometimes for the better, and other times for the worse. The changes ranged from humans gaining certain characteristics of bears, wolves, or in some regions even bats or seals. It wasn't merely humans that were affected either. All creatures in the world had changed in some way. Whether they were also hybrids such as horse-shrimp, and dolphin-butterflies, or simply giant versions of previously smaller creatures. Any of these sudden changes to the world on their own would have uprooted the balance of society on their own but none could match the lasting effect that the Agyo had on the world.

The Agyo were objects that took form at the base of the pillars of light that assaulted Vasil. The individuals that originally came into contact with them forged the shape that they would then forever take on. For all, they took the form of an indestructible tool for combat, with dominion over an element, or aspect of reality. The people who wielded them dared to change history, and to do that, they needed power. Power taking the shape of their ideal. The shapes and abilities the Agyo took on varied, ranging from a bow that granted one dominion over the wind and air, to a spear that governed ice and cold itself. The abilities granted by the Agyo weren't at all limited to those wielding the weapon, however. The average person could be taught how to use these abilities, though on a much, much lower level. These powers came to be known as gaima. Specific techniques were discovered with each gaima type, with the techniques eventually earning the name of sima. Users of gaima were granted the title of gaimon, but even the greatest gaimon of the age stood no chance when faced with the wielder of an Agyo. The lucky few that stumbled upon the Agyo and obtained their immense power were easily able to rule the nations they resided in. The period immediately after the Agyo were obtained became known as the age of conquest.

These wars of expansion continued until the nations with Agyo encountered one another and were unable to press forward. It was nearly impossible for any of these battles between Agyo wielders to end well for either side. Killing an Agyo wielder was a tall order even with one on your side, and as such many battles ended in victory for one side, yet the Agyo wielder for the other side survived, allowing them to retaliate by annihilating an enemy's territory. Entire cities were wiped out in this manner, and after enough conflicts ended in naught but total annihilation, the idea of combating a nation with an Agyo was too foolish to consider. Far more damage would be done than what was worth the potential gain from winning. As time went on, the world's nations formed an unwritten rule to not engage in open combat with one another, for fear of utterly annihilating each other. As time went on, and Agyo wielders began to pass on from old age or disease, the Agyo were passed down to their children, and this started a tradition. For one thousand years, the Agyo were passed down the royal lineages of all the world's nations, and with the passage of time, it was believed that each Agyo was tied to the respective family that owned them, and anyone outside of that bloodline would be unable to wield the Agyo.

Now in the current era, the belief that Agyo were tied to specific bloodlines was seen as fact. This meant that no matter how horrendous a ruler may have been, the people of a nation could do nothing but watch as they were subjected to any and all manners of atrocity. They believed that even if they somehow managed to overthrow the corrupt ruler by some miracle, that they'd only be dooming their country to be conquered without the protection of its Agyo. After all, only a fool would risk dying just to ultimately doom their nation.
