Chapter 45 - Digimon Hacker: Recollection [45]

BOOM!

After Greymon completed its evolution, Renamon had no choice but to retreat from the battlefield.

Because she quickly discovered that, although Greymon had successfully evolved, its intelligence hadn't increased one bit. Lost in fury, it no longer distinguished friend from foe—every creature in sight became an "enemy."

Of course, Renamon couldn't deny that the intense battle had significantly depleted her strength, and she desperately needed some time to recover.

Such terrifying evolutionary speed… Can this Greymon really be a Digimon born just today?

Watching Greymon wrestling fiercely with Parrotmon, Renamon panted slightly, her worldview undergoing a severe challenge.

If Agumon's evolution to Rookie level in just one day could still be attributed to exceptional innate talent…

Then its sudden evolution just now into Greymon—a form strong enough to stand toe-to-toe with an Ultimate like Parrotmon—could no longer simply be explained by mere talent or aptitude.

Recalling some scattered words Chen Ze once said, Renamon subconsciously turned her gaze toward the Yagami siblings standing behind her.

Or, to be more precise, Renamon focused her attention on the younger sibling, Kari.

If Renamon remembered correctly, Greymon's "sudden evolution" had occurred precisely when Kari blew her whistle.

In other words, there must be some sort of power linking the whistle and Kari herself—a power capable of making a Digimon evolve instantaneously.

Digivolution Program…?

With this thought, Renamon concentrated intently and, sure enough, detected a faint glow on Kari—similar to Mimi's Crest of Purity.

However, compared to Mimi, Kari's glow was purer and more deeply hidden.

"No... It's not only the little girl."

Casually glancing around again, Renamon suddenly noticed that even Tai standing beside Kari was enveloped in a similar light.

But compared to Mimi and Kari, who had both activated their lights, Tai's Crest of Courage remained incomplete, still waiting to awaken fully.

After all, courage differed from purity—it required experiencing danger and gaining resolve before that uniquely human glow could fully manifest.

...

"ROAR!"

Renamon's complicated thoughts aside, after evolving into Greymon, the Digimon formerly known as Agumon finally gained the strength to match Parrotmon blow for blow.

Taking advantage of Parrotmon's momentary shock, Greymon aggressively seized Parrotmon's front claws, forcing it into a direct contest of raw strength.

BOOM!

In this aspect, Greymon—based upon ancient dinosaurs, whose raw physical strength was its strongest attribute—clearly held the advantage. For a moment, Parrotmon actually found itself unable to break free.

"Screee!"

However powerful Greymon's physical strength might be, it was ultimately still a Champion-level Digimon.

Parrotmon, on the other hand, was an Ultimate who'd evolved to the peak of its capabilities, transcending even the limits of its species. Though not the strongest Ultimate in raw power, it certainly wasn't helpless against a Champion-level opponent.

BOOM!

Like two colossal war machines locked in combat, Greymon and Parrotmon's struggle had yet to determine a winner, but already the cement beneath their feet cracked and fractured.

Their enormous hind legs sank more than half a meter deep into the street, steadily burrowing even deeper.

As their fierce stalemate continued, the area around them rapidly broke apart, eventually forming a massive pit that could only be described as a natural disaster.

Crackle…

However, this brief stalemate didn't last long. Sparks of electricity began spreading over Parrotmon's body, stimulating it to surpass previous limits, rising to a new, unprecedented level.

This was the true meaning behind the title "Ultimate."

If not swiftly defeated, an Ultimate-level Digimon, whose bodily functions had already reached the pinnacle of evolution, would gradually adapt to any external "pressure," turning it into fuel for further growth.

Simply put, Parrotmon—still locked in a contest of strength with Greymon—was growing stronger by the second. Little by little, it surpassed Greymon precisely in terms of physical prowess.

"Screee!"

Just when the onlookers assumed the stalemate would drag on further, Parrotmon, now covered head to toe in crackling electricity, abruptly flapped its wings.

In an instant, Parrotmon half-lifted itself from the pit, violently freeing its legs and ruthlessly kicking Greymon.

"ROAR!"

Caught off guard, the gigantic Greymon fell heavily onto its back. Parrotmon immediately seized the opportunity, pinning Greymon's neck with one claw, clearly aiming to snap it.

"Damn it!"

Seeing this, Renamon—who'd been watching carefully from the side—could no longer worry about her own exhaustion. She immediately prepared to leap forward and intervene.

Earlier, Renamon's willingness to join the battle had partly been a ploy to test Mirei Mikagura's bottom line. But now, she genuinely wanted to rescue Greymon.

This desire had nothing to do with calculations or allegiances. Renamon simply felt a Digimon as unique as Greymon shouldn't die here like this.

But Parrotmon—a veteran who'd survived countless battles and evolved into an Ultimate—couldn't possibly overlook Renamon's intentions.

Whoosh!

Anticipating Renamon's move, Parrotmon decisively opened its beak wide. Air mixed with electric currents swiftly condensed in its mouth, forming a dazzling ball of plasma.

In just a fraction of a second, Parrotmon could unleash this plasma sphere, annihilating both Greymon and Renamon instantly, reclaiming their data.

Unfortunately, imagination remained imagination. This world never lacked unexpected events—especially artificially created ones.

"[OVERLOAD FLAME]!"

At this critical moment, a young yet authoritative voice suddenly sounded from behind Parrotmon.

BOOM!

The very next moment, a pale flame shot through the air, crossing dozens of meters in a blink, slamming into Parrotmon's completely unguarded back.

Even more shockingly to everyone present, this pale fire—which appeared even weaker than Agumon's previous orange fireballs—successfully pierced Parrotmon's electromagnetic barrier, striking directly at the back of its head.

"Screee!"

Seizing this rare chance, Greymon—still pinned beneath Parrotmon—suddenly twisted upward, fiercely driving its newly evolved horn straight into Parrotmon's lower jaw.

Crack!

Instantly, the plasma sphere Parrotmon had gathered began leaking violently.

Greymon and Parrotmon, both in extremely close proximity, became the primary victims of this disaster. Caught in the devastating heat exceeding tens of thousands of degrees, both Digimon simultaneously howled in agony.
