Chapter 44 - The First Keeper Hunt

The moment the Keeper vanished, every light inside Medical Wing Seven died.

Not flickered.

Not dimmed.

They simply ceased to exist.

Darkness swallowed the room so completely that even the emergency illumination failed to activate. For three long seconds, the world existed only as breathing, footsteps, and pounding hearts.

Then—

The lights returned.

Doctors stumbled back into motion, confused expressions spreading across exhausted faces.

One nurse blinked repeatedly.

"...What happened?"

Another looked around the ward.

"I... don't remember."

Only a handful of people still remembered everything.

Kairen.

Daniel.

Rowan.

Director Vale.

And Sera, still unconscious on the hospital bed.

---

Twenty minutes later.

The emergency council assembled beneath Ironreach Headquarters.

The room buzzed with overlapping voices.

"...A global memory lapse..."

"...Localized only to direct witnesses..."

"...No Ruin signatures..."

Vale stood before the circular chamber, her expression colder than anyone had ever seen.

"The Keeper wasn't here to kill."

She activated the battle recordings.

Every camera showed static during the Keeper's appearance.

Every sensor returned identical readings.

Nothing.

No energy.

No temperature fluctuation.

No spatial distortion.

It was as though reality itself had refused to acknowledge the entity.

One councilor frowned.

"Impossible."

Vale nodded.

"I agree."

She enlarged the final frame.

Only one object remained visible.

A single thread of faint silver light stretching through the darkness.

Straight toward Kairen.

The room became silent.

"...What is that?"

Vale answered without hesitation.

"The Burden."

---

Kairen stood outside the chamber alone.

He hated meetings.

Especially ones about himself.

The hallway was unusually quiet.

Association personnel who passed him avoided eye contact.

Not because they feared him.

Because they didn't know what he had become.

Monster?

Weapon?

Savior?

Anomaly?

Kairen wasn't sure anymore.

Footsteps echoed behind him.

Eli stopped beside him, carrying several thick data tablets.

"You look awful."

"I've heard."

Eli didn't smile.

"I finished comparing the Keeper recordings."

"And?"

"...They're hunting."

Kairen looked at him.

"Hunting what?"

Eli's face had gone pale.

"You."

---

Inside one of Ironreach's deepest archives...

Ancient records slept beneath layers of forgotten security.

Documents older than the Hunter Association itself.

Older than modern civilization.

Vale unlocked the final seal.

Dust drifted into the air.

Shelves filled with handwritten journals stretched into darkness.

One leather-bound book immediately caught her attention.

Its cover contained no title.

Only one symbol.

A broken circle.

She opened it carefully.

The first page contained a date impossible to believe.

Year 728.

Centuries before Gates.

Before Hunters.

Before Ruin.

The handwriting trembled across yellowed pages.

> They came before history remembered them.

Vale's breathing slowed.

She turned another page.

> They do not invade.

> They arrive when civilizations begin refusing predetermined endings.

Another page.

> We called them Keepers because they never fought wars.

> They only concluded them.

Vale's heartbeat quickened.

Then she reached the final intact page.

Only one sentence remained readable.

> Beware the Hunter who teaches humanity to carry each other's burdens.

Her eyes widened.

"Kairen..."

The journal crumbled into dust.

---

Elsewhere.

Far beyond Earth's atmosphere.

Beyond stars.

Beyond observable reality.

The Keepers gathered.

Seven figures stood upon an endless plain of black crystal.

Each represented a different aspect of Finality.

Silence.

Stillness.

Completion.

Acceptance.

Oblivion.

Memory.

And at their center...

The First Keeper.

The one Kairen had fought.

Its fractured body slowly restored itself.

One of the others spoke.

> Report.

The First Keeper answered.

> The Burden has evolved.

Another Keeper tilted its head.

> Destroy it.

> Impossible.

Silence spread across the crystal plain.

Impossible.

The word had not been spoken among them for billions of years.

The First Keeper continued.

> The Burden is no longer contained within one bearer.

> It has become relational.

A ripple spread across every Keeper.

Another voice emerged.

Cold.

Ancient.

> Then eliminate the relationships.

The crystal beneath them glowed.

A map appeared.

Earth.

Hundreds of tiny lights shimmered across its surface.

Each one represented a connection created by Kairen.

Most were weak.

A few already burned brightly.

The First Keeper pointed toward three lights.

> Begin with these.

The lights dimmed.

Three names echoed through the void.

Sera Kline.

Joren Hale.

Daniel Ashcroft.

---

Back on Earth...

Daniel sneezed.

Rowan looked over from the training room.

"You okay?"

Daniel rubbed his nose.

"Yeah..."

"...Just suddenly felt like someone walked over my grave."

Before Rowan could answer...

Ironreach shook.

A deafening explosion echoed across the western district.

Emergency alarms immediately screamed.

WARNING

RUIN BREACH DETECTED

LEVEL: CALAMITY

Daniel froze.

"No..."

His communicator crackled violently.

"Kairen!"

It was Eli.

"They're not attacking civilians!"

"What?"

"They're attacking every hunter connected to the Burden!"

Daniel's blood ran cold.

---

Across the city...

Sera woke.

Joren collapsed.

Dozens of connected hunters suddenly clutched their chests in agony.

Invisible silver threads became visible for only a heartbeat.

Then—

Something black wrapped around them.

The connections were being strangled.

---

Kairen stopped running.

Not because he was tired.

Because he could feel it.

Every thread.

Every connection.

Someone was pulling them apart simultaneously.

His knees buckled.

Blood spilled from his mouth.

Daniel caught him.

"Kairen!"

Kairen looked toward the burning western skyline.

His eyes widened.

"They found all of them..."

Eli's voice came through the communicator.

"There are seventeen simultaneous attacks!"

Vale shouted from command.

"They're dividing him!"

Kairen slowly stood again.

Despite the blood.

Despite the pain.

Despite every instinct telling him to stop.

Black-and-red energy slowly ignited around him.

Not wildly.

Quietly.

Purposefully.

He looked toward his friends.

"They think..."

"...hunters only know how to fight monsters."

His grip tightened around the Oathblade.

"They're about to learn..."

The Burden spread across his arms like living fire.

"...what happens..."

The city trembled.

"...when the monsters..."

The silver threads flared brighter than ever before.

"...become the hunted."

Across reality...

For the first time...

The Keepers realized something horrifying.

Kairen wasn't running from them.

He had decided...

To hunt them.
