The silence that followed the closing of the golden eye was heavier than any explosion.
No one spoke.
Across the ruined western district, hunters stood frozen where they had been fighting only moments before. Ruin Beasts, which moments ago had charged without hesitation, slowly retreated into the fractured streets as though obeying an invisible command.
The battle had ended.
Not because humanity had won.
Because something greater had ordered it to stop.
Kairen remained motionless, his eyes fixed on the empty sky.
The Sovereign's voice still echoed inside his mind.
"Hunter... Come and find Me."
It hadn't been a threat.
It hadn't even been a challenge.
It had been an invitation.
Daniel finally broke the silence.
"What... was that?"
No one answered.
Even Director Vale looked shaken, her usually composed expression fractured by genuine uncertainty.
"The entire planet heard it," Eli said quietly, studying the readings on his portable scanner. "Every communication network is flooded. Satellites recorded the phenomenon from orbit. Every Ruin Gate across the globe became inactive for exactly twelve seconds."
Rowan tightened his grip on his sword.
"Twelve seconds?"
Eli nodded.
"It was like... the entire world stopped breathing."
Kairen lowered his gaze.
"No."
Everyone looked at him.
"It was listening."
A chill passed through the group.
Before anyone could ask what he meant, alarms erupted throughout Ironreach.
Not emergency alarms.
Priority Alpha alarms.
A holographic projection appeared above every street in the city.
GLOBAL ASSOCIATION EMERGENCY BROADCAST
The image flickered before stabilizing.
Supreme Commander Alistair Ren appeared before the world for the first time in nearly a decade.
His face was lined with age, but his silver eyes remained sharp.
"If every hunter can hear this..."
He paused, choosing his next words carefully.
"...the world has entered a new era."
The hologram shifted.
A planetary map appeared behind him.
Thousands of red lights blinked across every continent.
Gasps spread among the gathered hunters.
"There were never this many Gates," someone whispered.
Alistair nodded.
"They are not Gates."
The image zoomed in.
Each red light was stationary.
Perfectly circular.
"They appeared the moment the Sovereign revealed itself."
Another screen appeared beside the map.
Every red circle carried the same symbol.
A broken crown.
"The Association has designated these phenomena as Finality Domains."
Silence followed.
"Our best estimates suggest that once a Domain fully manifests..."
His expression grew darker.
"...an entire region will permanently cease to exist."
The words struck harder than any weapon.
Not destroyed.
Not consumed.
Cease to exist.
As though history itself had been erased.
"The first Domain is predicted to stabilize within seventy-two hours."
The transmission ended.
The city erupted into chaos.
People shouted over one another.
Hunters rushed toward command centers.
Emergency vehicles flooded the streets.
Daniel stared at the fading hologram.
"Seventy-two hours..."
Kairen was already walking.
"Where are you going?" Rowan asked.
"To the first Domain."
Vale stepped in front of him.
"No."
He stopped.
"You don't even know where it is."
"I will."
"You need time to recover."
"There isn't any."
Vale folded her arms.
"This isn't another Ruin outbreak."
"I know."
"It's exactly what the Sovereign wants."
"I know."
Her voice hardened.
"Then why are you walking straight into it?"
Kairen looked at her with calm, unwavering eyes.
"Because if I don't..."
"...someone else will."
Vale held his gaze for several seconds.
Then she stepped aside.
"I expected that answer."
She tapped her communicator.
"Operation First Hunt begins immediately."
Daniel frowned.
"First Hunt?"
Vale nodded.
"The Sovereign invited one hunter."
She looked directly at Kairen.
"I'm sending an army."
Within minutes, Ironreach Headquarters transformed into a fortress of activity.
Every elite hunter currently stationed in the city received the same summons.
Command rooms filled beyond capacity.
Maps of the newly formed Finality Domains covered every available screen.
Eli stood at the center of the operations room, rapidly analyzing streams of incoming data.
"They're unlike anything we've ever seen."
He enlarged one of the images.
Inside the crimson circle, the city itself appeared... wrong.
Buildings existed at impossible angles.
Roads folded into the sky.
Time stamps from surveillance drones contradicted one another.
One camera recorded sunrise.
Another, taken at the exact same second, showed midnight.
"What causes that?" Rowan asked.
"No idea."
Eli swallowed.
"But physics isn't working correctly inside."
Another analyst rushed into the room.
"We've confirmed the location of the first Domain."
Everyone turned.
The analyst projected the coordinates.
The room fell silent.
Daniel looked twice before speaking.
"...That's impossible."
The crimson marker rested directly over a city.
Not abandoned.
Not evacuated.
Alive.
Nearly two million civilians still lived there.
"Lumina City," Vale whispered.
"The Sovereign chose one of the largest hunter settlements on the continent."
Kairen stared at the projection.
His Burden stirred violently.
Not from fear.
Recognition.
Something inside the Domain was calling him.
A voice no one else could hear.
"Come alone..."
He clenched his fists until blood dripped from his palms.
"No."
The whisper returned.
"Only one hunter is needed."
His black-and-red aura flickered instinctively.
Daniel noticed immediately.
"Kairen?"
The whisper became louder.
"Bring others..."
"They will become endings."
Kairen shut his eyes.
For a brief moment, countless silver threads appeared before him.
Every hunter connected to the Burden.
Every life depending on him.
He opened his eyes again.
"They're trying to separate me."
Vale nodded.
"Then we do the opposite."
She turned toward the assembled commanders.
"No hunter enters the Domain alone."
A chorus of acknowledgments echoed throughout the chamber.
Outside, storm clouds gathered over Ironreach.
Not natural clouds.
The same dark crimson seen within the Ruin.
Rain began to fall.
Each drop shimmered faintly before vanishing the instant it touched the ground.
Eli stared upward.
"The world is changing."
Kairen joined him outside the command center.
He extended one hand toward the disappearing rain.
"It already has."
Far beyond the stars, inside the endless cathedral of dead suns, the Sovereign watched the tiny blue planet.
Millions of golden eyes opened across the darkness.
Each one focused on a single point.
Kairen.
A voice echoed through the endless cathedral.
"Does the Hunter understand?"
The Sovereign answered with perfect calm.
"He understands enough."
"And if he refuses the path?"
"Then he will create another."
The countless eyes slowly closed.
"That..."
"...is why he must be witnessed."
Back on Earth, the first Finality Domain pulsed.
The air around Lumina City fractured like cracked glass.
For an instant, every person inside the city disappeared.
Then they returned.
No one remembered the missing second.
Only one person did.
Kairen suddenly grabbed his chest as another wave of pain surged through the Burden.
He looked toward the distant horizon.
His voice was barely above a whisper.
"The countdown has already begun."
And seventy-two hours suddenly felt far too short.
