Chapter 40 - Tricked

Five days ago, I called a truce with Tessa, and things between us changed.

She became friendlier, more respectful toward me, and even considered my opinion before acting. Honestly, it felt strange—the sudden shift in her attitude. I hadn't met someone who could switch that fast.

Well, if we weren't counting Dante, who was a monster.

Still, I didn't judge her. I didn't overthink it. At that point, I just wanted a friend. Someone I could talk to, someone who wouldn't judge me when they barely knew anything about me.

"Do you like my brother?" Tessa asked, half her body draped across the couch, her eyes flicking from her phone to lock onto mine.

I choked on my Cheerios, coughing as some of it went down the wrong pipe.

"What?" I croaked, once I found my voice.

"You've been talking about him nonstop since morning, how he's the ideal man anyone could ever wish for," Tessa pointed out.

"That doesn't mean I like him," I muttered.
