The Gentle Monster

The world around me was cold, metallic, and brighter than my eyes could bear. It didn't used to be this way, but it is now. I curled inward, and sharp plates rested against each other. My limbs sprawled in the sticky green fluid surrounding me; they were longer than I remembered and bent at strange angles.

Additionally, something heavy dragged behind me as I moved, acting as a counterweight, and instinctively, I knew to use that for balance. Finally, the air stung; each breath scraped my throat and tasted of chemicals I strangely recognized. I was tasting fear—not mine, but theirs.

Beyond my glass confinement, two figures trembled, their heartbeats audible to my super-sensitive ears. They stared at me as if my shape offended the world, as if I had done something wrong. Wasn't it they who had placed me in this cage to begin with? When I raised my limbs, they stepped back in fright, so I lowered them. I didn't want to harm them; I simply wanted to know why they had captured me. Honestly, I am as afraid of them as they are of me, but they didn't realize that. I wish they did; they wouldn't trap me in here a second time.

Yes, you heard me right, it was the second time, and this is how I ended up where I am right now.
