I really couldn't explain why the moment Tessa stepped out of the kitchen, something sharp and cold pierced straight through my chest.
It was ridiculous, irrational even. But the pain was real, like someone had taken a fist and shoved it directly through bone and muscle, squeezing hard around my heart. I had never felt anything like it before. Not when Olivia stormed off on me. Not even when we'd fought so badly she didn't speak to me for days. Nothing had ever hit me that fast or that hard.
But with Tessa… it did.
I stood frozen for a half breath, watching the sway of her hair and the stiff set of her shoulders as she walked away. She didn't even look back. Maybe that was what hurt the most.
