Lilian's POV

Herman sat back in his leather chair, coffee mug balanced in his hand like he owned the world.

The second I walked through his office door, he placed the cup down with deliberate precision and fired off his question. "Why didn't you just stay home for the rest of the week?"

Gone was any trace of his usual professional courtesy. Instead, his voice carried a sharp edge that made my stomach clench.

Was he pissed about me missing work yesterday?

Guilt crashed over me as I rushed to explain. "I had a family emergency yesterday and couldn't make it in. I'm truly sorry for the short notice. It won't happen again, I swear."

Herman's gaze swept over me before settling on my midsection.

Something about the way he stared made my skin crawl. Without thinking, I crossed my arms over my stomach protectively.

He caught the gesture and let out a harsh laugh that had zero humor in it. "So you really are carrying a baby?"
