"Grandma, I'm home!" Serena's voice rang through the Zach house as she burst through the door, practically bouncing with excitement.
I watched Mable spring to her feet, arms outstretched to catch our little whirlwind before she could tumble over in her enthusiasm.
"What's made you so cheerful today?" Mable asked, genuine curiosity sparking in her eyes.
I'd never seen Serena return from kindergarten with this level of pure joy—not even on the days when Natalia picked her up. Something special had clearly happened.
With obvious pride, Serena thrust a certificate toward Mable's hands.
"I won first place today, Grandma! It was for my craft project. I've never gotten first place before," she announced, her chest puffed out with accomplishment.
