Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: Breaking the Deadlock

Wang He felt a chill run down his back.

He didn't bother checking his injuries.

He even used the force of that slash to sprint forward at full speed.

"Don't run!"

Jiang Feng barked in a low voice.

Wang He didn't even look back.

There was a fork in the road ahead of him.

One path led toward Zhenbei Prison.

The other led toward the Dragon Capital Government Office.

He hesitated for a moment. Instead of fleeing to Zhenbei Prison, he ran toward the Dragon Capital Government Office.

Jiang Feng gave relentless chase from behind.

As if he had a deep, blood feud with Wang He.

"Help! Murder!"

Wang He kept screaming for help as he ran.

His cultivation was only Bone Refining, but he'd learned a body technique. At first, he couldn't use it well inside the house, so Jiang Feng caught up fast. But now they were on the main street, and Wang He was like a fish in water. His legs moved like whips, kicking up sharp gusts of wind.

His speed wasn't any slower than Jiang Feng, who was at the Seventh Grade Realm—maybe even a touch faster.

Wang He was about to escape.

Suddenly.

On the rooftop across the street, a figure appeared.

The man drew his bow and notched an arrow, aiming swiftly at Wang He.

"Bang!"

Jiang Feng saw this and kicked a brick off the ground, sending it flying toward the rooftop figure.

"Whizz!"

The sudden flying brick caught the man off guard. His shot veered off course, and the cold arrow ended up thudding into the ground right in front of Wang He.

Wang He was scared out of his wits once again.

He shrieked nonstop and bolted toward the Dragon Capital Government Office at top speed.

He ran so fast it was like he'd gotten another boost, slipping into the corner ahead in seconds.

The man on the rooftop didn't hesitate; he drew his bow again and went after him.

"Whoosh!"

But at that moment, a fierce gust sliced past his ear.

On the street below, Jiang Feng launched himself off a cart, leaping up onto the rooftop and slashing his Bone-Carving Saber at the black-clad man.

He couldn't let Wang He die at the other man's hands—otherwise, everything would be for nothing.

"Whoosh!"

The man was startled.

He spun around, loosing the arrow he had readied straight behind him.

"Thud."

He fired in a rush, but the shot was devastating in both power and aim. Jiang Feng's saber struck his hand, the arrow shot into Jiang Feng's abdomen—but the arrowhead only pierced his flesh, and Jiang Feng grabbed the shaft with a death grip in his left hand.

Even so, Jiang Feng broke out in a cold sweat.

This man's strength was definitely above his own.

Not only was his archery outstanding, his cultivation, even if not Sixth Grade, had to be at the peak of Seventh Grade Realm.

"What the hell are you doing?"

The man shouted angrily.

He was under orders to kill Wang He.

He'd seen Jiang Feng chasing Wang He and nearly hacking him to death, and thought Jiang Feng was with the same faction. But Jiang Feng had first sabotaged his shot, and now even injured his wrist.

Jiang Feng kept silent.

He swung his Bone-Carving Saber again, slashing toward the attacker at lightning speed.

"Get lost!"

The man roared in fury.

He wielded his great bow like a spear, and in one sweeping counterattack, knocked Jiang Feng's saber flying out of his grip.

Jiang Feng cursed under his breath.

When it came to skills, he only had Prison Guard Long Fist.

No way he'd win this fight!

But now, there was no other choice. He launched Prison Guard Long Fist, aiming a Mountain Ascending Style straight for his opponent's chest.

The other man blocked with his great bow.

Jiang Feng's punch landed on the bow, but he was still knocked back two steps by the force.

"Prison Guard Long Fist—you're from the prison?"

The man gasped in surprise.

Jiang Feng sighed. Prison Guard Long Fist was a low-level, slow-to-show-results skill, mostly used by actual prison guards.

He had trained it to entry level—almost no one in Zhenbei Prison could do that.

But even then, its power was nothing to shake his opponent.

Crisis point.

He quickly added two hundred Fortune Points to Prison Guard Long Fist.

Skill: Prison Guard Long Fist (Proficient)

"Boom!"

In that instant, Jiang Feng felt the Prison Guard Long Fist sharpen remarkably. He hammered out another Mountain Ascending Style. The other man tried to block with his great bow, but Jiang Feng's punch rattled him and forced him back a step.

Jiang Feng seized the moment.

He followed with a Mountain Descending Style.

His fist broke through the bow defense, smashing into the man's abdomen.

"Bang!"

The man tumbled off the rooftop.

But as he was about to crash into the ground, his feet tapped lightly off the alley walls on both sides, vaulting him back up to the rooftop. This time, he drew his bow and aimed at Jiang Feng's head in a flash.

Jiang Feng jerked his head aside, dodging the arrow by a hair's breadth.

"You're not here to kill Wang He. You're here to save him."

The man seemed to see through everything. He had a mission; he didn't want to waste time on Jiang Feng.

After firing the arrow, he dashed off in Wang He's direction.

His body technique was even faster than Wang He's.

He skimmed across the rooftops like a swallow in the dark, flying low through the night—Jiang Feng could only watch him go.

Not that he intended to give chase.

He'd done what he came to do.

As for whether this would break the stalemate, only fate would tell.

That's right.

Wang He was the key to breaking the deadlock.

In Jiang Feng's mind, he had every reason to believe Wang He possessed some criminal evidence against Yang Qi. He managed a bunch of little prison guards—if they knew, how could he not?

After seeing Yang Qi drown today,

Wang He was definitely rattled.

So as long as Jiang Feng provoked him at this moment, Wang He, desperate to survive, would surely spill everything at the Dragon Capital Government Office.

"I'm Junior Captain at Zhenbei Prison—Wang He! Someone's trying to kill me, please help!"

"I need to see Chief Huang!"

Wang He finally reached the Dragon Capital Government Office.

He startled several government officials.

"Whoosh!"

Just as Wang He was about to enter the office,

another cold arrow zipped in from behind.

Wang He was utterly spent. His legs buckled, and he stumbled forward.

"Thud!"

Because Wang He fell ahead, the arrow only stuck into his calf.

"Assassin!"

"Over there!"

The government officials at the Dragon Capital office quickly dragged Wang He inside, while a squad of guards surged out.

"Damn it."

A figure cursed in the darkness, then sped away from the Dragon Capital Government Office.

He knew there were masters stationed here. Stick around any longer and he'd die for sure.

"Lord Wang, don't let me down!"

Jiang Feng couldn't help himself—he had to check. Seeing Wang He finally reach the government office, he smiled quietly inside.

He'd guessed Minister Yang would try to kill Wang He if there was a chance, but he hadn't expected Yang to move so fast—sending assassins after him the very same night. Luckily, Jiang Feng intercepted them, or else both he and Uncle Huo would be finished.

Jiang Feng melted into the night then.

He deliberately circled the city several times.

When he was sure he'd shaken off pursuit,

Jiang Feng changed into his prison guard uniform and headed for the brothel. He did not go home; he wasn't sure if everything he did tonight had any effect. If Wang He had no evidence to accuse Minister Yang—

then all of tonight's efforts were wasted.

All he could do was run.

Still, even if Wang He didn't have enough proof, Minister Yang's attention would be entirely on Wang He. If Jiang Feng made meticulous plans, he should be able to escape Dragon Capital.
