Chapter 17 - CH 17. clean up, work, and a scared girl

The next three hours were a blur of activity. A specialized cleanup crew arrived—professionals who dealt

with crime scenes and other unpleasant situations. They worked with impressive efficiency, removing the

bodies, cleaning the blood, even repairing the damaged wall where one of the gang members had been

thrown.

Jason had to close the outdoor and garden department during the cleanup, but the rest of the store

remained open. Surprisingly, business actually picked up. Word had spread quickly about what had

happened, and people were curious. Some came to gawk, others came to show support, and many came

because they felt safer shopping at a store where the owner could and would protect them from criminals.

Jason took the opportunity to get himself cleaned up and changed. He showered thoroughly, washing

away the blood and gore, then dressed in fresh clothes. When he looked at himself in the mirror, he

looked completely normal—no sign of the violence he'd committed just hours earlier.

He found Jessica and asked her to keep Sarah company in his office while he dealt with the aftermath.

Jessica agreed immediately, her eyes full of concern for the traumatized woman.

"Take care of her," Jason said. "She's been through a lot."

"I will," Jessica promised. She hesitated, then added, "What you did today... that was incredibly brave.

And kind. You saved her life."

"I did what anyone should do," Jason said.

"But most people wouldn't. Most people would have looked the other way, or called for guards and hoped

they arrived in time. You acted. You protected her." Jessica stepped closer, rising on her toes to kiss him

softly. "That's one of the many reasons I love you."

Jason returned the kiss, holding her close for a moment. "Go on. Sarah needs you right now."

Jessica nodded and headed to the office. Jason watched her go, then returned to overseeing the cleanup

and managing the store.

By around 2:30 PM, the outdoor and garden department was finally clean and ready to reopen. The

cleanup crew had done an impressive job—there was no sign of the violence that had occurred there just

hours earlier. Even the damaged wall had been repaired and repainted.

Tina returned to her duties in the department, though Jason noticed she kept glancing at him with a

mixture of awe and desire. The display they'd worked on together that morning was intact, and she

busied herself with helping customers who were interested in the plants and seeds.

Jason made his way to his office, where Jessica and Sarah were waiting. He knocked softly before

entering.

Sarah was sitting on the couch, a cup of tea in her hands. She looked calmer than she had earlier, though

her eyes were still red from crying. Jessica sat beside her, one hand resting comfortingly on Sarah's

shoulder.

"How are you feeling?" Jason asked gently.

Sarah looked up at him, and her expression transformed. The fear and trauma were still there, but

overlaying it was something else—gratitude, admiration, and a dawning realization of what he'd done for

her."Better," she said softly. "Thanks to you. And Jessica. She's been very kind."

"I'm glad," Jason said. He looked at Jessica. "Could you give us a few minutes? I'd like to speak with

Sarah privately."

Jessica nodded, standing. She leaned down to give Sarah's shoulder a gentle squeeze. "You're safe now.

Jason will take care of you."

As Jessica passed Jason on her way to the door, she paused to kiss him—a deeper, more passionate

kiss than the one earlier. Her tongue slipped into his mouth briefly, and when she pulled back, her eyes

were dark with desire.

"Later," she whispered, a promise in her voice. Then she left, closing the door behind her.

Jason moved to sit next to Sarah on the couch, maintaining a respectful distance but close enough to be

comforting. His presence, his scent, his aura—all of it washed over Sarah, making her feel safe in a way

she hadn't felt in a very long time.

"Thank you," Sarah said, her voice thick with emotion. "Thank you for saving me. I don't know what would

have happened if you hadn't been there."

"You don't need to thank me," Jason said. "But I would like to understand what happened. If you're

comfortable talking about it, I'd like to hear your story."

Sarah took a deep breath, her hands tightening around the teacup. "I should probably explain everything,"

she said. "You deserve to know what you got involved in."

Jason settled back into the couch, his posture relaxed and patient. "Take your time."

And then, time suddenly stopped.

System Rewards

Everything froze. Sarah, mid-breath, her mouth slightly open. The steam from her tea, suspended in mid-

air. The sounds from the store below, cut off as if someone had pressed a pause button on reality itself.

And then the familiar blue screen appeared in Jason's vision, the System interface that had become a

regular part of his life in this world.

The screens faded, and time resumed its normal flow.

Jason felt a slight tingle in his groin area, a warm sensation that spread through his lower body for just a

moment before fading. He didn't feel dramatically different, but he could sense that something had

changed. The knowledge of his new ability was simply there in his mind, as if he'd always known it.

He filed the information away for later consideration. Right now, Sarah needed his attention.

Sarah seemed to have gathered her thoughts during what, for her, had been just a moment. She began

to speak, her voice soft but steady.

"It started about a year ago," she said, staring into her tea. "My father... he had a gambling problem. He

owed money to some very bad people. The Blue Fang Syndicate."

Jason listened quietly, his expression sympathetic.

"He couldn't pay," Sarah continued. "He kept promising he would, kept taking out more loans to cover the

old ones, but it just got worse and worse. And then one day..." Her voice cracked slightly. "They killed him.

Made it look like an accident, but I knew. Everyone knew."

"I'm sorry," Jason said softly.

Sarah nodded, wiping at her eyes. "But they didn't just kill him. They said his debts transferred to his

family. To me. I was taken as... as collateral. Given to Trex Carver, one of their Capos, to be his woman."

The words came out bitter, full of pain and humiliation.

"For six months, I was his. He... he did things. Made me do things." She shuddered. "But the worst part

was when he started talking about passing me around to his gang members. He wanted to make me their

'trap whore,' as he called it. Said it would be good for morale, good for business."

Jason's jaw tightened, anger flaring in his chest. The men he'd killed had deserved far worse than the

quick deaths he'd given them.

"I couldn't do it," Sarah said, her voice stronger now. "I couldn't let that happen. So I ran. I've been

running for three days, hiding, trying to stay ahead of them. But they found me this morning. I thought... I

thought it was over. I thought they'd catch me and drag me back, and this time there'd be no escape."

She looked up at Jason, her eyes shining with tears and gratitude.

"And then you were there. Like an answer to my prayers. Like the Dark Lady herself sent you to save

me."Jason reached out, placing his hand over hers. The touch was comforting, warm, and Sarah felt a surge

of emotion at the simple kindness of it.

"You're safe now," Jason said firmly. "Trex is dead. His gang members are dead. And I promise you, no

one is going to hurt you again."

"But the Blue Fang Syndicate," Sarah said, worry creeping into her voice. "Trex was a Capo. They'll want

revenge. They'll come after you, after your store, after everyone here. I've put you all in danger."

Jason just chuckled, a sound that was both amused and slightly dark. "Let them come."

Sarah stared at him, confused by his lack of concern. "You don't understand. They're powerful. They have

connections, resources, dozens of members—"

"Sarah," Jason interrupted gently. "Let me show you something."

He stood up and walked to his desk, opening one of the drawers. He pulled out a letter opener—a simple

metal tool with a pointed end, used for slicing open envelopes. He returned to the couch and held it out to

Sarah.

"Take this," he said.

Sarah took the letter opener, confused. "What...?"

"Stab me," Jason said calmly. "Go on, do it."

Sarah's eyes widened. "What!? Are you sure? Are you crazy?"

"Just do it!" Jason insisted, his voice firm but not unkind.

Sarah hesitated, the letter opener trembling in her hand. This man had saved her life, had shown her

kindness, and now he was asking her to stab him? It made no sense.

But something in his eyes, in his absolute confidence, made her trust him. She raised the letter opener,

aimed it at his chest, and thrust forward.

The point hit his shirt, hit his skin beneath, and... stopped. It didn't penetrate. It didn't even dent the skin. It

was like trying to stab a steel plate.

Sarah pulled back and tried again, putting more force behind it. Same result. The letter opener simply

couldn't pierce his skin.

She tried a third time, this time aiming for his arm, putting all her strength into the thrust. The letter opener

bent slightly from the force, but Jason's skin remained completely unmarked.

Sarah dropped the letter opener, her hand flying to her mouth in shock. "How...?"

"Now you know why I'm not scared," Jason said, his voice dropping to a lower, more intense register.

"The Blue Fang Syndicate? They should be afraid. They SHOULD BE!"

The emphasis on those last words sent a shiver through Sarah—not of fear, but of something else

entirely. This man was powerful beyond anything she'd imagined. He was invincible, unstoppable, and he

was offering her his protection.

She felt something shift inside her, something fundamental. All her life, she'd been at the mercy of others

—her father's debts, Trex's cruelty, the Syndicate's power. But here was someone stronger than all of

them, someone who could protect her, someone who already had.

"I don't know what to say," Sarah whispered. "How can I ever repay you?"Jason smiled, a warm expression that made her heart skip. "Actually, I have an idea about that."

A New Beginning

"I'd like to offer you a place here," Jason said. "At Mercees. With me."

Sarah's eyes widened. "You... you want me to work here?"

"More than that," Jason said. "I want you to be part of this. Part of what we're building. You'd have a job, a

home, safety, and a future. No more running. No more fear."

Sarah felt tears welling up again, but these were different—tears of relief, of hope, of gratitude so

profound she could barely contain it. "I... I would be honored. But I don't understand why. Why would you

do this for someone like me? I'm... I'm used goods. I'm damaged. I'm—"

"You're a survivor," Jason interrupted firmly. "You're strong, brave, and you deserve better than what life

has given you. I see that. And I'd like to help you build something new."

Sarah nodded eagerly, unable to speak for a moment. When she finally found her voice, it was thick with

emotion. "Yes. Yes, please. I'll work hard, I promise. I'll do whatever you need. I'll—"

"Perfect," Jason said with satisfaction. "You'll be our department head of Clothing and Accessories. It's a

position that needs filling, and I think you'd be perfect for it."

Sarah's face lit up with a smile—genuine, happy, full of renewed hope and purpose. "I won't let you down.

I swear it."

"I know you won't," Jason said. He stood, offering his hand to help her up. "But before we make this

official, before you truly become part of Mercees, part of my family here... I must make you mine."

The words hung in the air between them, heavy with implication. Sarah understood immediately what he

meant, and she felt a surge of heat through her body. This wasn't just about a job. This was about

belonging, about being claimed, about becoming his in every sense of the word.

And she wanted it. Dark Lady help her, she wanted it more than she'd wanted anything in a long time.

"Yes," she breathed. "Please. Make me yours."

Jason's eyes darkened with desire, and he moved closer. His hand came up to cup her face, his thumb

brushing across her cheek. "Are you sure? After everything you've been through, I don't want to—"

"I'm sure," Sarah interrupted. "You're nothing like him. Nothing like any of them. You're... you're everything

I've prayed for. Please, Jason. I need this. I need you." That was all the permission Jason needed.
