Chapter 1 - A New Day

He woke up and groaned. Rubbing his neck and grimacing like thousands of other mornings. Is life felt dull. Forgetting his pain he sat up and looked out the window. "I can't live like this. My life is a mess and I have eternity to organize it." He said to himself looking down at the tiny specks at the bottom of the towering skyscraper.

The city scape was still weird to him but he got used to it the longer he stayed. He felt as though the world was turning and he was slowing it down. He stood up and walked toward the door. He slept with his clothes on knowing he wouldn't want to put them on in the morning.

He turned the knob as the door creaked open. The echoes of friends talking bounced down the hallway. "Good morning, Marcus!" his neighbor said as if to try and fill him with energy. But it had no effect on the zombie-like walk Marcus was doing trying to drag himself down the long path.

"Top of the morning to you." Marcus whispered in response.

So depleted of energy he finally made it to the elevator. He tried to press the button but it screeched, "Elevator offline, come again later!" In a cheerful robotic voice.

He groaned and started down the stairs instead. The echoing footsteps filled his eardrums as he descended down the complex. Marcus's dread grew the more he thought about his job. He was a factory worker in the industrial part of the city. He was afraid the longer he worked there the more poisoned he would become. The deadly metals poison the workers and many have died.

For him the work was not grueling or hard it was just… he tried to think of a good word. It was, Exhausting.

As he approached the exit he was thinking about the crowd there is going to be on a Friday morning. The large quick-paced crowd that would push him along.
