Chapter 1 - Unnamed

THE MAN I WANTED part2

Written by Adebisi Blessing

Rachel thought her mother was joking when she said she would cut her off if she didn't follow her wishes. But soon, reality hit her like a storm. The words that had once sounded like an empty threat began to take effect. Her mother stopped speaking to her, the house grew cold, and every door she turned to was shut.

Rachel couldn't bear it anymore. Her heart was heavy, her eyes swollen from crying. So one morning, before dawn, she quietly packed a small bag and left the house. She had no clear destination—only a dream: to find her prince charming, someone who would love her for who she was, not for her mother's wealth or control.

On her journey, Rachel met danger face to face. A group of armed robbers stopped the bus she was traveling in. They took everything—her bag, her little savings, even her phone. By the time they were done, she was left with nothing but the clothes on her back and her trembling hands.

Rachel wandered aimlessly, tears streaming down her face. She had no home, no food, and no way to reach anyone she knew. Pride and fear kept her from going back home. So she decided to survive, no matter what it took.

Days passed. Her strength began to fade. One afternoon, she saw a small roadside shop and begged softly, "Please, sir… can I have just a little bread and water? I haven't eaten in two days."

The old man behind the counter gave her food without question. That small act of kindness gave her a glimmer of hope. But life on the streets was still harsh. She slept in abandoned buildings, sometimes under trees.

One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, Rachel felt dizzy. The world spun before her eyes, and everything went black.

When she opened her eyes again, she was lying on a hospital bed.

"Where… where am I?" she whispered.

A calm voice answered, "You're safe now."

It was a young man named Eric—the one who had found her unconscious by the roadside. He had brought her to the hospital, paid her bills, and visited daily. "You don't even know me, yet you're doing all this," Rachel said one morning.

Eric smiled. "Because everyone deserves a second chance."

Those words touched her deeply.

When Rachel was discharged, Eric offered her a place to stay until she could rebuild her life. "You can live with me," he said, "but promise to find something meaningful to do. I'm just a bricklayer, but together we can make it work."

Rachel accepted gratefully. Determined not to be a burden, she searched for jobs—but her mother secretly blocked every opportunity.

Heartbroken, she humbled herself and took a job as a waitress at a small restaurant. When Eric heard the news, he smiled proudly. "I'm so proud of you. You didn't

Weeks later, Eric received his biggest construction job yet. To celebrate, he took Rachel out for dinner.

Rachel wore her finest dress—simple but neat. She looked at her reflection and whispered, "I may have lost everything, but I haven't lost myself."

When she stepped out, Eric froze. His jaw dropped slightly, and a slow smile spread across his face.

In that moment, Rachel realized something the man she had been searching for was standing right in front of her all along.
