The thick fog still lingered in the machine hall, a remnant of the acid rain that had subsided at the end of the previous chapter. The faintly glowing symbols on the walls pulsed slowly, as if waiting for the right moment to erupt. Frey stood at the center of the circle, his body trembling, his eyes vacant as they fixed upon carvings that gleamed like dead stars. Aurelia clutched the ancient book they had just unearthed, its cracked leather cover and brittle pages filled with the same symbols. Selene remained upright, her gaze cold, as though she already knew what was about to unfold.
The resonance began to echo—soft at first, then louder—like a heartbeat that did not belong to any living creature. The ruined city above them quivered, iron towers groaning like dying beasts. The gas lamps flickered, then extinguished one by one, replaced by an alien glow seeping from the symbols etched into the walls.
Frey closed his eyes, the whisper growing sharper. "Frey… you are the door… you are the key…" The words layered with echoes, piercing his mind until it felt as though his skull would shatter. Isolde's shadow appeared again, more vivid this time, her face blurred but her eyes sharp, staring directly into him. "The gate is waiting," she whispered. "And you cannot run."
The floor convulsed violently, as though the city's heart was pounding out of control. Pipes burst, spewing toxic steam into the chamber. From the fog emerged a colossal figure: a mechanical shadow, larger, more tangible, and more ferocious than before. Gears spun of their own accord, forming a body that mimicked life. Its eyes glowed with alien light, and each step made the ground quake, as if the world itself was about to collapse.
Aurelia recoiled, her face pale with terror. "That… that is no ordinary machine. It is a shadow of the Veil!" Her voice trembled, yet she raised her steam pistol, firing smoke-laced bullets into the creature. Small explosions rippled through the fog, but the monster pressed forward undeterred.
The shadow roared, a sound forged from clashing metal and cosmic whispers. The chamber transformed into a battlefield: the glow of symbols clashing against encroaching darkness, the grind of gears battling the hum of alien resonance. Selene stepped forward, lifting her hand, and the symbols on the walls flared brighter. The shadow faltered, as if recognizing her power, then lunged again with violent force.
The fog thickened, swallowing the hall. Aurelia fired in rapid succession, each shot staggering the creature momentarily, only for its body to knit itself back together. Selene remained composed, her eyes glinting with icy resolve, manipulating the symbols to restrain the beast. Light and shadow collided, blinding flashes tearing through the gloom.
Frey staggered, his eyes glowing faintly. The whispers surged, his body becoming a conduit for something vast and alien. In the darkness of his mind, he saw the colossal gate, cracked open, leaking a light not of this world. Hunter stood beyond it, his gaze hollow. "You are me, and I am you," the voice intoned.
The mechanical shadow leapt, gears spinning like a vortex, its massive limbs crashing against the floor. Aurelia screamed, unleashing her final shot, while Selene raised her hand, the wall symbols blazing in defiance. Yet the creature grew stronger, the fog denser, the chamber trembling as though on the brink of collapse.
Frey's eyes snapped open, his body radiating light. He lifted his hand, and the shadow froze, trembling, as if awaiting command. The symbols pulsed faster, the chamber shook, and cracks split the fabric of reality. Through the widening fissures, glimpses of another world bled through: a violet sky, stars that moved like living beings, shapeless shadows crawling across the void.
The creature roared again, lunging with renewed fury. Aurelia rushed to Frey's side, desperate to shield him, while Selene's voice cut through the chaos, cold and unwavering. "You must choose. The gate will not wait forever."
Frey stood firm, his body blazing, his eyes torn with conflict. The whispers of the Veil thundered in his mind, calling his name over and over. "Open… or destroy…" The words reverberated, fracturing his thoughts.
Aurelia cried out, her voice raw with fear. "You are still Frey! Don't let them take you!" Selene's gaze remained fixed, her expression unreadable, as though she already knew the outcome.
The city groaned, the symbols pulsed, the cracks widened. The mechanical shadow lunged once more, stronger, faster, as if intent on devouring the entire chamber. Frey raised his hand, his body blazing, his soul caught between salvation and ruin.
"And in the beat of the cosmic gate," Frey thought, "I knew… this choice would decide the end of the world."
