The upper terrace of the Academy offered a flawless, unobstructed view of the
capital skyline.
Below them, the festival was a sea of glowing lanterns and moving crowds. Above
them, the night sky was suddenly torn open by a massive, booming explosion of
color.
Boom.
Red and gold sparks rained down, illuminating the stone terrace.
Cain stood near the railing, his eyes tracking the expanding light.
Magnesium base, Cain analyzed internally. Combined with a low-grade fire mana
infusion to delay the combustion. Visually effective, but tactically
inefficient. The flash-blindness radius is too small to disorient a vanguard.
A blue window chimed into existence, hovering directly over the exploding
fireworks.
[ Notice: You are currently evaluating festive explosives as military ordnance.
] [ Diagnosis: You are ruining the mood inside your own head. ] [ Command: Stop
looking at the sky. Look to your right. ]
Cain closed the window and turned his head.
Liora stood beside him.
Alice had conveniently dragged Rei away to "find better seating" five minutes
ago, and Aera had gone to secure a protective casing for her new water-spirit
plushie. It was a coordinated tactical withdrawal. They had intentionally
isolated Cain and Liora on the terrace.
Liora wasn't looking at the fireworks.
She was looking at him.
The crimson and gold light from the explosions reflected in her silver eyes. The
cool autumn wind caught the edge of her dress, but she stood perfectly still,
her posture radiating that signature Valcrest pride. But there was a heavy,
undeniable tension in the space between them.
"You didn't flinch," Liora said quietly, her voice barely carrying over the
distant cheering of the crowd.
"At the fireworks?" Cain asked.
"At the noise," Liora corrected. She took a slow step closer. "When we first
returned from the dungeon, loud noises made your grip tighten. Your breathing
would shift. You were constantly waiting for an ambush."
Cain didn't deny it. "The environment has stabilized."
"No," Liora said, stopping just inches away from him. She looked up, holding his
gaze with absolute, unwavering intensity. "You stabilized."
She didn't look away. She didn't blush and stutter like the other girls in their
class would have. She was a frontline fighter, and she approached this
conversation with the exact same fearless precision she used in a duel.
"I watched you tear yourself apart in my family's courtyard," Liora continued,
her voice dropping to a fierce whisper. "I watched you carry the weight of a
dead system and a cursed soul, and you never once asked for help. You just stood
in front of us and took the damage."
Cain's jaw tightened slightly. "It was my responsibility."
"I am not a civilian, Cain," Liora said, her eyes flashing. She reached out,
pressing her hand flat against the center of his chest. Right over his heart. "I
am not a glass doll that needs to be kept in a safe room. I am a Valcrest. I am
a vanguard."
A blue window aggressively flashed into Cain's vision, glowing with a bright red
border.
[ WARNING: LETHAL STRIKE IMMINENT. ] [ Target is demanding emotional
clarification. Evasion is impossible. ] [ Command: Choose your words carefully,
Host. If you mention tactical spacing right now, she will throw you off this
balcony. ]
Cain dismissed the window.
He didn't need the system to tell him the stakes. He could feel the heat
radiating from her palm against his chest. He could see the fierce, demanding
vulnerability in her eyes. She wasn't asking for protection. She was asking for
her place in his life.
Cain slowly raised his hand, placing it over hers.
He didn't pull her hand away. He kept it pressed against his chest.
"I know what you are," Cain said, his voice dropping into a low, steady cadence.
"I have never viewed you as a liability. In the dungeon, when the lines broke,
you were the only reason the center held. You are the most capable fighter I
have ever met."
Liora's breath hitched slightly, but she held her ground. "Then why do you
always put yourself between me and the danger? Why do you insist on standing in
front of me?"
Cain looked at her.
He thought of the White Domain. He thought of the absolute terror he had felt
when the Black Veil had tried to use her face against him.
"Because if you fall," Cain said quietly, "my formation breaks."
Liora stared at him.
"I don't want you behind me, Liora," Cain continued, his dark eyes locking onto
hers with absolute, unfiltered honesty. "I need you beside me. Because you are
the only one who can keep my pace."
Boom.
Another firework exploded overhead, showering the terrace in brilliant gold
light.
Liora's immaculate, iron-clad composure completely shattered.
Her lips parted in quiet shock. A deep, furious blush rushed up her neck and
across her cheeks. She tried to maintain her fierce glare, but the corners of
her mouth betrayed her, curving into a helpless, radiant smile. She lowered her
head, resting her forehead gently against his shoulder to hide her face, her
hand gripping the front of his coat.
"You are infuriating," Liora whispered against his collar, though she made no
move to step away.
Cain stood perfectly still, letting her lean against him. He rested his hand
lightly on her back, feeling the quiet, steady rhythm of her breathing.
A soft chime rang in his head.
[ Critical Hit. ] [ Target's Defenses: Obliterated. ] [ Romance EXP +2000. ] [
Status: I bow to your accidental, deadpan rizz, Commander. ]
Cain closed his eyes, ignoring the blue text, and simply listened to the sound
of the fireworks.
