Chapter 28 - The Woman Who Smiled Too Softly

Adrian hadn't expected his mother to arrive this early. He had expected many things—another message from his brother, another breach, another warning carved into a wall somewhere—but not her. Not here. Not now.

Yet when the elevator doors opened into the penthouse lobby, she was waiting.

Elena Blackwood.

Graceful. Perfect. A calm smile shaped onto her lips as if she had been carved out of composure itself. She wore a pale grey coat, her gloves tucked neatly into one hand, her posture straight and immovable like a sculpture.

Mia froze the moment she saw her.

Elena's gaze shifted toward the movement. Her smile warmed instantly.

"You must be Mia."

Mia's breath caught. She nodded politely, even though her pulse had begun to climb.

Elena stepped toward her, each step measured. "I've heard so much about you."

Adrian tensed. "Mother."

Elena touched his arm gently. "Relax, Adrian. I'm only here to see my son." Then her eyes returned to Mia, calm and assessing. "And the girl who seems to be occupying far more of his thoughts than he realizes."

Mia didn't know how to respond.

Elena's voice was soft, almost affectionate. "Would you join us for a moment, dear? I'd like to speak with you properly."

Mia looked at Adrian.

He gave a subtle shake of his head.

Elena noticed.

"Oh Adrian," she said with a quiet laugh, "you make it too obvious. She'll think I'm here to interrogate her."

"Aren't you?" he said.

She smiled wider. "Only gently."

The guard near the hallway shifted uncomfortably. Adrian ignored him and walked Mia closer to his side.

"Mother," he said, tone lowering, "not today."

Elena's expression didn't change, but something beneath the surface tightened, like silk pulling over steel.

"Adrian, sweetheart," she murmured, "you do not decide when I speak to the people surrounding you."

Mia felt the softness in Elena's voice bend slightly, like something sharp hidden beneath velvet.

Elena turned to her again. "Mia, come sit for a moment. I insist."

Mia hesitated—until Adrian's hand brushed lightly against her back. A quiet signal.

"I'm here," he whispered. "She won't harm you."

Mia nodded and followed Elena into the sitting room.

Elena sat gracefully, gesturing toward the sofa opposite her. "Tell me, Mia… how long have you known my son?"

"Only a short time," Mia answered carefully. "It hasn't been long."

"And yet," Elena said, "you've managed to make him break several of his own rules. Quite impressive."

Mia blinked. "I didn't make him do anything."

Elena tilted her head in a deceptively kind way. "Oh, dear. Men like Adrian don't change themselves. Someone inspires the change."

She folded her hands neatly. "And I would like to understand why."

Adrian stepped between them. "Mother, enough."

But Elena merely touched her own wrist with a sigh. "Adrian, darling, please. I'm talking to her, not you."

Her polite tone never cracked.

She leaned forward slightly. "Mia, do you know what happens to the people close to my son?"

Mia felt the question strike deeper than it sounded.

Elena continued in the same gentle voice. "They become targets. They become vulnerabilities. They make him weak. And weakness, in this family, is fatal."

"Mother," Adrian said sharply.

Elena ignored him.

"Mia," she said, her smile returning in full, "my advice to you is simple. Do not become something he will have to protect."

Mia swallowed. "I never asked him to."

"Oh, I know," Elena said sweetly. "But that doesn't change it. Your presence already affects him. I can see it in the way he stands. The way he watches you. The way he nearly snapped at the board today."

Mia's heart clenched. Elena had seen everything.

Elena rested her chin gently on one hand. "You are special to him. That much is obvious."

Mia didn't know what to say.

"But," Elena added softly, "I do not want you caught inside a war you cannot survive."

A chill went down Mia's spine.

Adrian stepped in front of her fully now. "Mother. That's enough."

Elena finally leaned back, satisfied.

"Very well," she said. "I've said what I came to say."

She rose, smoothing her coat.

"But Mia," she added, pausing at the door, "if you ever feel trapped, confused, or frightened… come to me before you run to Adrian."

Mia froze.

Elena smiled gently. "I will explain to you exactly what you're getting yourself into."

Adrian's eyes darkened. "Don't involve her."

Elena looked at him with a softness that somehow felt colder than anger.

"I already am."

She walked to the elevator, pressed the button, and glanced back one last time.

"Take care of her, Adrian. If you can."

The doors closed.

Silence wrapped the room.

Mia let out a shaky breath. "Adrian… she—she wasn't what I expected."

"No," Adrian said. "She's worse."

"What does she want from me?" Mia whispered.

Adrian turned to face her fully.

"She wants to see whether you break."

Mia felt the words hit her like a blow.

"And if I don't break?"

Adrian's eyes softened with something fierce, protective, and dangerous.

"Then she'll decide if you're strong enough to stay."
