Chapter 4 - A Raven appears

A few months later..

Sounds of clashing between blades can be heard from time to time. In a secluded part of the forest near Nevermore, Y/N and Igris are going head-to-head conducting combat training. Daggers against sword clashes with ferocity and precision. The Shadow Knights are gathered around the area to keep unwanted visitors from accidentally entering the sparring grounds. After an hour of high intensity fighting, Y/N sat down gasping for air with beads of sweat pouring down from his forehead.

Y/N looked up to the night sky and said, "It's been a few months since I started combat training, but I still can't beat Igris yet. But... I'm slowly getting there. I can already see the flaws in Igris' fighting style."

Y/N sighs and stands up while calling up Igris and the rest of Shadow Knights, "Once again, recently more people are disappearing near Nevermore or Jericho so be sure to alert me if you all find this monster decapitating travelers. Igris, stay for a bit and help me develop some binding power."

Lately I feel like I'm a bit unbalanced since I have the knights as cover in case I get surrounded as well so some binding force could be useful in the long run. Now what can I use for binding to derive from the shadows.

Y/N ponders and gets a clue, "I can use Kurapika from Hunter x Hunter as an example since his main form of attack, defense, and binding revolve around chains. Another example would be Gilgamesh or Enkidu from the Fate series using the Chains of Heaven Noble Phantasm from those golden portals.

As I materialized the shadow chains, I entangled a tree nearby to test the power. After summoning more, I hit my limit on how many I can release.

Y/N smiles and chuckles, "Not bad. I managed to summon about twelve chains in total before I started to feel some strain. I guess I still need to work hard to grow this power. Anyways I should start heading back before I get caught sneaking out again."

Using Shadow Exchange, I swapped with a shadow knight hiding inside the shadow of my roommate. Looking over to the side, my roommate is still asleep. It was an interesting first impression he gave me.

His name is Eugene Ottinger. He's a typical nerdy-looking boy with fluffy brown hair and black glasses and a metal retainer. He seems to exude pity and longing for recognition and friendship around him, but he does have a good personality on him. Though he seems too obsessed with beekeeping or anything bee-related topics.

Considering he's the president of the Nevermore Hummers club, I'm not surprised. I even joined his club since I was told during the start of the school year that I needed a place to join. The location is at least quiet-ish since there's still bees buzzing around but the free honey is a bonus on toasted bread.

Heading towards the bathroom, I took a quick shower to clean off the sweat and grime from combat training earlier. I headed towards the bed fully clothed ready for the next day but before I closed my eyes, a shadow knight just informed me of a cave inside the forest with chains attached to the walls as well as huge claw marks all over.

Y/N commanded, "Leave two knights on sentry duty for the cave and report back if there's anyone or anything entering the cave. I'll investigate tomorrow if there's no surprises in class."

After giving the order, Y/N finally laid back down and slowly drifted to sleep. Never knowing that starting tomorrow, his path would intersect with the fateful Raven.

The next day, Y/N started his morning exercise directly taking inspiration from the One Punch Man routine with 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squats, and a 10km run on a daily basis.

Y/N finally finished and took a breather, "Phew, three months of continuous training really did well for my physique, and I feel more energized after. Saitama-sensei, your teaching didn't let me down!!"

Back to my thoughts, time to shower and get ready for class today and then check out that cave later. After finally getting dressed, I started heading down the stairs and out of the dorm. As I get closer to the main entrance to the academy, I see a classic Cadillac from the 50's. That butler is really tall but feels a bit lifeless. The next people coming out are a couple who have an unnatural attraction to one another as well as a young boy who looked like he needed a backbone.

Y/N chuckles lightly, "Haha.. feels like Eugene in a way."

The last person to get off the car was a young woman who wanted nothing to do with this place. She looks pale as a corpse with medium length hair in twin pigtails as well as wearing dark clothing that wraps around her slim body like the abyss. She looked like she could give Death a run for his money with that murderous gaze she's giving her parents. Seemingly feeling my eyes on her, she turned around and saw a young man walking towards her.

Y/N started walking towards the door and as I passed by her, we locked eyes for a moment and said, "You have the darkest eyes I've ever seen like the abyss staring back at me. They look good on you." And then I enter the building, leaving the girl to ponder what I said.

I got to the first class with no problems at all. It's a little boring considering I already learned the whole book beforehand a few weeks ago. The second and third class were alright as well but it's the same situation as the first class. The last class of the day is fencing, so I guess I can get some warm-up before nighttime practice later.

"Thank you body for that accelerated development," Y/N thought.

Anyways, it's lunch break right now and I haven't seen Enid yet. Usually, she's the first one out urging me to grab food with her but she's nowhere to be found. As I lean against the pillar, I see Xavier Thorpe, who was a fellow psychic though a bit broody, is painting a mural on the opposite side of the Quad.

After waiting around for a few minutes, I get tapped on the shoulder. Knowing it's Enid ready to grab some food, I turned around and was surprised to see the girl I saw this morning.

Enid cheerfully greets, "Hey Y/N, sorry for making you wait. Principal Weems called me to take my new roommate around so maybe we can grab some food with her as well. Oh oh oh!! Her name is Wednesday. I'm so happy to finally have a roommate~!"

Y/N replied, "That's all right Enid. We can grab some food later when you're done." I turned to face Wednesday and welcomed her, "Nice to meet you again Wednesday. Seems like you'll be joining us till school term ends. My name is Y/N Ashborn. A pleasure to make your acquaintance.

Wednesday replied back, "Likewise. My name is Wednesday Addams. But you're wrong about one thing, I won't be staying here. I will not be turned into like my mother by sending me to this school. I will find a way to leave one way or another." She finished speaking with utmost certainty.

Y/N chuckles, "It seems like what I felt from you when you came this morning was right. You have a sense of rebellion about you. I can give you a small piece of advice. No one can make you who you want to be. Only you can do that."

Wednesday looked up in slight astonishment that someone can understand her plight and pursuit of her individuality. Remembering what happened this morning came to her mind; she felt her heartbeat sped up a couple beats faster and showed the tiniest blush as heat spread to her cheeks. Immediately she calmed herself down and gained a little recognition for this strange young man.

Wednesday blankly responds, "I'll keep that in mind and.. I appreciate your comment this morning."

Y/N softly smiled and replied, "You're welcome. Whether you'll stay or not, welcome to Nevermore. Feel free to find me or Enid if you need anything." I turned to Enid and said, "Come find me around the Edgar Allan Poe statue when you're done."

Enid happily responds, "Okay, I'll find you later with Wednesday if she wants to come along after the tour." I turned and waved to both girls as I walked away.

Enid turned to Wednesday and happily said, "Y/N is still the same as the day I met him. So nice and got along with everyone.. Well, almost everyone. He put up with me and I know I can be a handful sometimes. I like him a lot. I can confidently say that he's my best male friend."

Wednesday replied, "He's an interesting person." Both girls continued their tour of Nevermore Academy and came back to the front for Wednesday to say her farewells to her family.

While sitting by the Edgar Allan Poe statue, I looked around the area to see if there's anything to see. Looking up, I see a riddle. Probably related to Edgar Allan Poe. Now let's see if we can crack it. After a few minutes deciphering the riddle, the answer was "SNAP TWICE".

Thinking about it for a while, I snapped my fingers twice and the statue started moving backwards only to reveal a stairway towards the underground. I have Igris in my shadow in case something happens, so I walked down and saw a circular room with bookshelves filled with books.

Y/N looks around and sees signs of activity and mutters, "Looks like someone has been here frequently. Well, I'll check it out further later on after checking that cave and plus I think Enid is probably done with her task. Time for food~"

I walked back up and the statue slowly closed after me. I saw Enid heading my way, so I met her halfway and went to grab some food before lunchtime was over. I told her that I'll see her after class and separated from there. I needed to grab my gear for fencing class.

As he walked up to his dorm room thinking about the cave exploration later, he thought, "I wonder what we'll find in that cave."
