Chapter 15
Aria paced the edge of the cliff overlooking the forest, her heart hammering in her chest. The wind tugged at her hair, whipping it around her face as if the elements themselves were urging her to make a decision she wasn't ready for. The past week had been a whirlwind—Kael claiming his place as her mate, the pack whispering, and her own conflicted emotions threatening to unravel her control.
She could still feel his hands on her wrist, the heat of his gaze, the intensity that burned in every word he spoke. Every fiber of her being screamed both to flee and to surrender. She hated him. She feared him. Yet, in the quiet moments, the truth gnawed at her: she couldn't ignore the bond. It had claimed her heart before she even knew it existed.
A rustle behind her made her spin. Kael emerged from the tree line, his long strides closing the distance between them effortlessly. "Aria," he said, his voice calm but tinged with authority. "You're running again."
"I'm not running," she snapped, turning away, though her voice lacked conviction. "I'm… thinking."
Kael stopped a step behind her, his presence suffocating yet magnetic. "Thinking? Or avoiding the inevitable?"
Her wolf growled low in her chest, a warning she couldn't quite interpret. "You don't get it," she said, trying to keep her emotions in check. "I don't want this. I don't want you. Not after everything."
Kael's expression darkened, frustration mixing with longing. "Everything?" he repeated, voice low and dangerous. "You mean the years I watched you struggle, the years I tried to make you notice me in your own stubborn way? You think this changes anything? It doesn't, Aria. I've waited too long, and I won't walk away—not now, not ever."
Her hands trembled at her sides. The wind tugged at her cloak, but she couldn't pull herself from the invisible force drawing her toward him. "I can't… I'm not ready," she whispered, voice trembling.
Kael stepped closer, reducing the space between them until she could feel the heat radiating off him. "Then let me be patient," he said softly, almost tenderly, "but don't think for a second you can fight this bond. Your wolf, your heart… they belong with me. And deep down, you know it too."
Her chest tightened as memories of her childhood flashed vividly—every cruel joke, every taunt, every moment he had used his dominance to intimidate her. And yet, mixed with the anger, there was an undeniable pull, a spark she could never extinguish.
"Why now?" she demanded, tears stinging her eyes. "Why claim me now, when I've spent years hating you?"
Kael's jaw tightened, a flicker of vulnerability crossing his sharp features. "Because I can't wait any longer. Because the pack needs a strong Alpha mate pair. Because I need you. And because I refuse to lose what's mine—what was always mine, even if you didn't see it yet."
Her wolf stirred, the instincts she had fought her entire life clawing to the surface. It wanted him—wanted to merge with the strength, the dominance, the undeniable pull he represented. And yet, she wanted to fight, to preserve the defiance that had carried her through years of cruelty.
"You think this bond makes everything okay?" she asked, voice shaking. "You think it erases all the years of hate, the humiliation, the pain?"
Kael's eyes softened, just for a moment, as if he could see every layer of her soul. "No," he admitted, his voice quiet but resolute. "It doesn't. But it doesn't erase the future either. We get to choose what comes next. Together. You and me. The bond doesn't take away your pain—it just gives us the power to face it… together."
Her breath hitched. The wind carried the scent of pine and earth, mingling with the raw tension that vibrated between them. The pull of the mate bond was nearly unbearable, tugging at every instinct she had buried, every wall she had built.
"I hate that I feel this way," she admitted, her voice barely audible, a mix of fear and desire. "I hate that my wolf responds to you… that my heart—my entire being—wants you, even though I despise you."
Kael smiled faintly, a mixture of triumph and tenderness. "Good. Hate and desire often share the same fire. The trick is learning to control it—or letting it consume you. I won't let it harm you, Aria. I promise. But I won't hide from it either. Not when it defines us."
The forest seemed to hold its breath as they stood on the cliff, two wolves of fate intertwined by destiny, anger, desire, and undeniable love. Every second stretched into eternity, and Aria realized something terrifying: she could never outrun him, nor could she outrun herself.
Kael stepped closer, brushing a loose strand of hair from her face, his touch lingering longer than necessary. "One day, you'll see that the bond doesn't chain you—it frees you. And you'll thank me… even if it's years from now. But for now, you need to trust yourself, your wolf… and me."
Aria closed her eyes, the wind whipping around her, the weight of every memory and emotion pressing down. For the first time, she allowed herself to feel, truly feel, the gravity of their connection. And as she opened her eyes, she knew the path forward wouldn't be easy, but it was inevitable. Kael was her mate. Her wolf had chosen. And whether she wanted it or not, her life had changed forever.
The first step, she realized, was acceptance. The next… would be the hardest—letting him in.
