The massive, ancient Black Oak trees of the Ironwood Witches' territory hummed with a primal energy that felt far older and more complex than Lycan mana or Vampire essence. For Kael, this was not freedom; it was merely a change of captor.
He was sprawled at the base of the massive oak, his chest heaving, his body slick with rain, sweat, and a trace of the Trueblood's blood. The Witch who had found him was terrifyingly serene.
She was tall and slender, perhaps in her mid-twenties, draped in robes woven from thick moss and dark green thread. Her skin was the color of damp earth, and her eyes were a shocking emerald green, unnaturally bright, focused on Kael with an intensity that felt like a physical examination.
"I asked you a question, little Omega," the Witch said, her voice melodic but firm, echoing the forest's ancient rhythm. "What is that metallic coldness clinging to your soul?"
Kael slowly pushed himself up, ignoring the protest from his fractured ribs. He knew better than to lie. Witches were known for their truth-finding spells.
"It is a System," Kael admitted, his voice hoarse. "It was activated when I was near death."
The Witch tilted her head, her curiosity overcoming her caution. "A System? A synthetic mana lattice? No. I've read the Silverfang scrolls. They do not possess the knowledge to construct such a thing. Let me see."
She stepped closer, raising her staff a piece of gnarled wood topped with a pulsing green crystal. The air around the crystal shimmered, and a tendril of pure, green magical energy shot out, heading directly toward Kael's forehead.
Kael instinctively flinched, but he was too slow to dodge the magic.
[WARNING: HIGH-LEVEL MAGICAL INTERROGATION DETECTED.]
[HOST SOUL INTEGRITY AT RISK. SYSTEM DEFENSES INITIATED.]
The System's alarm was deafening in Kael's mind. Before the green magic could touch him, the Omega System reacted violently.
A shield of black, crystalline energy instantly flickered into existence around Kael's skin. It was so transparent it was almost invisible, but it was absolute.
The green energy of the Witch's spell slammed into the black shield. Instead of breaking, the System's defense did something unexpected: it absorbed the magical energy.
The Witch gasped, stumbling back two full steps, her emerald eyes wide with alarm. Her staff trembled violently.
"Impossible! My Divination Ward… it vanished! It was consumed!"
Kael felt a sudden, small surge of energy within his Core.
[MINOR SKILL UNLOCKED: ESSENCE DAMPENING (PASSIVE)]
[DESCRIPTION: The Omega System is hostile to all external magical structures. Any foreign Mana or Essence that attempts to penetrate the Host is dampened and partially absorbed to fuel the System.]
Kael realized the truth of the System's identity. It didn't want to be protected; it wanted to **assimilate**.
"It is hostile to your magic," Kael explained, still panting. "I cannot control it when it feels threatened."
The Witch lowered her staff, studying Kael with a mix of fear and deep fascination. "A defensive mechanism that consumes magic. We call this phenomenon a 'Void Eater.' Only creatures of pure anti-mana are capable of this. You, an Omega, are hosting a Void Eater."
Another Witch, older, with long white hair braided with silver rings, emerged from the dense shadows of the trees, radiating an aura of ancient authority. This was clearly a leader.
"Sister Anya," the older Witch spoke, her voice dry and gravelly. "The Silverfang Betas are at the border, howling like children. And the air carries the scent of fresh Trueblood death. Tell me, does this Omega carry the scent of the kill?"
Anya, the younger Witch, nodded slowly. "Yes, Elder Maeve. He carries the blood of a Vladislaf. And he carries something far more dangerous than any Lycan or Vampire power."
Elder Maeve stepped into the clearing, her gaze sweeping over Kael, her eyes piercing through his ragged clothes and wounded body.
[WARNING: ELDER MAEVE DETECTED. POWER LEVEL: EXTREME. HOST MUST REMAIN COMPLIANT.]
"He killed a Trueblood," Maeve stated, not as a question, but as a fact. "A rare feat even for a high-tier Alpha. How did an Omega accomplish this without a core?"
Anya recounted the events briefly, focusing on the mysterious black shield that had devoured her spell.
Maeve remained silent for a long moment, tapping her staff lightly on the damp earth. "He is a nexus of chaos. If the Vampires find him, they will retaliate against the Ironwood for harboring the killer. If the Lycans find him, they will surrender him to the Vampires to avoid war."
"Then we must kill him," Anya concluded, her hand tightening around her staff. "A single life is not worth a war."
"No," Maeve interrupted, her voice gaining an edge of command. "Anya, look closer. This Omega… he is a weak point in the fabric of the supernatural hierarchy. He is a flaw. And flaws, if nurtured correctly, can unravel the entire tapestry."
Maeve walked a slow circle around Kael, her eyes never leaving him.
"Omega System," she spoke directly to the air around Kael, acknowledging the presence of the hidden power. "You require destruction of the established Mana Pillars to thrive. We, the Witches, require the restoration of balance. Perhaps our goals, though opposite in nature, can share a path."
She stopped directly in front of Kael, her face inches from his.
"Kael Vale," Maeve began, her voice low and serious. "You are a fugitive. We can either hand you over to the Pack, or we can keep you. We choose the latter, but not out of kindness. We choose it because your existence offers us a unique opportunity."
Kael knew he had to play this carefully. "What opportunity?"
"The Ironwood Witches have been seeking to stabilize the Wild Magic that flows beneath the city for centuries. It requires a neutral Core a focus point that is neither Lycan, nor Vampire, nor Witch. It requires a Pure Human Core to anchor its energy," Maeve explained.
Kael realized his Pure Human status, which was his curse, was now his greatest value.
"You will remain in our Sanctuary," Maeve continued. "In exchange for our protection from the Lycans and the Vladislaf House, you will perform one critical task for the Ironwood Coven."
[NEW QUEST UNLOCKED: THE WITCH'S BARGAIN.]
[OBJECTIVE: Anchor the Wild Mana Core beneath the Ironwood Sanctuary for 30 consecutive days. Failure will result in immediate expulsion and exposure to the Lycans and Vampires.]
[REWARD: PERMANENT SANCTUARY STATUS; 10x OMEGA POINTS; Unlock Mana/Essence Stat.]
Kael's eyes widened. Ten Omega Points! And the possibility of finally unlocking his MANA/ESSENCE stat, thus overriding his Omega curse. This was the System's biggest opportunity yet.
"I accept," Kael replied instantly, without hesitation.
Maeve smiled, a slow, knowing smile that was far more unnerving than the Vampire's snarl. "Excellent. Welcome to the Ironwood, Kael Vale. Your survival begins now."
She turned to Anya. "Bind his ribs, then escort him to the lowest chamber. Tell the Sentinel to prepare the Mana Anchor Stone. He starts at sundown."
As Anya led Kael away, he felt a strange sense of quiet optimism. He was still a prisoner, but he had a path now. A path to power, paved with the Witches' protection and the System's demands.
[HOST NOTE: MANA ANCHOR QUEST IS EXTREME RISK. FAILURE THRESHOLD IS HIGH.]
The System's warning was the last thing Kael registered before they disappeared into the dense, magical depths of the Ironwood Sanctuary. His new life among the Witches had begun.
