Chapter 72 - 72. Echoes in the Atrium

"Run! Run for your lives!" a man shrieked, his voice raw and echoing far beyond the shattered skylight into the surrounding streets. Panic tore through the shopping center like a wildfire. Men and women scrambled over one another in a desperate stampede, many tripping over scattered debris and crashing onto the tile, paralyzed by sheer terror.

The Ghoul's deafening screech reverberated through the hollowed atrium, a sound so violent it made ears bleed and drove the crowd's panic into absolute hysteria.

"It looks like a damn bioweapon!" a man screamed, hit in the face by a spray of dust as a terrified teenager sprinted past him.

From the edge of the corridor, the private bodyguards drew their heavy sidearms, stepping directly into the creature's path. "Shoot it down! Keep it away from the civilians!" the lead guard bellowed, his voice straining over the chaos.

Muzzle flashes strobed through the dimming light as a rapid hail of lead tore through the air. But as the rounds struck the creature, they simply pancaked against its hard, black flesh and exposed skeletal plating, bouncing off with harmless sparks and pinging into the walls.

"Bullets aren't even denting it!" a female bodyguard yelled, her hands trembling on the grip of her pistol.

Before she could adjust her aim, the Ghoul lunged. It moved with unnatural, terrifying speed—a streak of black smoke, dense dark flesh, and sharp bone closing the distance on her partner in a fraction of a second. Its massive jaw unhinged with a sickening crack, spewing thick, toxic smog as rows of jagged, needle-sharp teeth clamped down directly over his upper torso.

A heavy, wet crunch echoed through the hall as the jaws snapped shut. The sheer force cleaved straight through his tactical vest, bone, and spine, severing him in two. Crimson burst outward in a violent wave, painting the white marble floor and splashing across the nearby storefront windows.

He was swallowed in a single, grisly gulp, the creature's throat expanding as it forced the mass down.

"Liam!" the woman screamed, her eyes wide with unadulterated horror as her partner's blood pooled at her boots. She stumbled backward, her legs shaking so violently she could barely maintain her footing, taking a few desperate steps to retreat.

The rampage didn't stall for a heartbeat. The Ghoul swept forward, its tail whipping through the air like a scythe as it cut off her escape before she could even turn around.

"Retreat and call for—"

Her voice was instantly obliterated. The Ghoul's razor-clawed hand shot out, impaling her through the sternum and lifting her off her feet. Before she could drop her gun, its massive jaws clamped down over her head and neck. The crushing pressure pulverized her skull like glass, turning her final scream into a muffled, sickening gurgle. Bone fragmented, brain matter, and dark arterial blood sprayed across the floor as the jaw clenched tight, leaving nothing behind but a mangled, lifeless shell that it casually tossed aside like garbage.

Watching their only line of defense annihilated and devoured in seconds, the trapped civilians completely broke. Hope died on the spot, replaced by the suffocating realization that they were nothing more than cattle waiting for the slaughter.

Nene cowered behind the thick concrete corner of a support pillar, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Wh-Why does it look like that?!" she gasped, her eyes wide with terror. Sweat poured down her face, stinging her eyes, but even as her whole body trembled, she couldn't pull herself away.

Across the atrium, the air was thick with the scent of copper and smoke. Cries for help echoed off the high ceilings, cut short by brutal, sickening crunches as the monster tore through the lower floor. It was a carnage-filled nightmare—yet her stubborn, obsessive curiosity refused to let her run. If she turned back now, she'd lose the only chance she had to prove these things were real.

I just need the data, she told herself, forcing a shaky surge of confidence into her chest. Just enough to document it.

"Please don't look over here... Just stay right there and let me get a shot," she whimpered under her breath.

With agonizing slowness, she unclipped her camera, keeping her movements microscopic so the ghoul wouldn't catch the sudden shift in its peripheral vision. Her hands shook so violently she could barely hold the grip.

"Just... one snap. Just one good picture..."

She crept closer to the edge of the pillar, brought the viewfinder up to her eye, and adjusted the focus on the looming silhouette of black flesh and bone. But as her finger hovered over the shutter, her stomach dropped.

The screen didn't show the monster. There were no razor-sharp fangs, no glowing crimson eyes, no armored tail. The digital display held nothing but a featureless, blank blur—a flickering distortion of warped static where the nightmare was supposed to be.

Meanwhile, beneath the thick mound of shattered concrete and steel, a faint tremor rippled through the debris.

Itsuki's fingers twitched against the cold floor. With a slow, agonized blink, his eyes cracked open, heavy and unfocused.

"Yughh..." he groaned, the sound dry and raspy in his throat. "My head... hurts like hell."

He gritted his teeth and slowly lifted his head off the dusty floor, blinking hard against the haze to clear his foggy vision. Everything was a blur of smoke, floating dust, and flickering shadows. Pain throbbed behind his temples like a sledgehammer.

Using his hands, he began pushing off the heavy chunks of tile and stone resting on his back. Rubble clattered down the pile as he forced himself upward, every muscle in his torso screaming in protest.

"Man... what hit me?" he muttered under his breath, coughing as the thick dust bit at the back of his throat.

He planted his right forearm on a flat slab of concrete to push himself the rest of the way up, but the moment he put weight on it, a sharp, white-hot shock of pain shot straight up to his shoulder.

"Gah! Ah—shit!" Itsuki hissed, pulling his arm back instantly and clutching his elbow with his other hand. "Damn it... must've taken a heavy piece on the way down..."

He knelt there for a second, catching his breath and taking stock of his battered body. Shaking off the lingering dizziness, he carefully hoisted himself onto his feet, his arm tucked tightly against his ribs.

"Nene... where the hell did that idiot run off to?" he muttered, his eyes darting around the ruined lower floor as the memory of the ghoul slammed right back into his head.

Itsuki gritted his teeth, his knees buckling for a second before he forced them to lock into place.

"Come on... move, you damn legs," he growled through his teeth, struggling to haul his weight out of the jagged crater of debris. Every shift of his boots sent small avalanches of stone and crushed glass sliding back down into the pit, the sharp edges digging into his clothes and scraping his skin. His elbow throbbed with a dull, sickening beat, but the adrenaline spiking in his blood kept him moving forward.

As he finally scrambled out of the rubble heap and onto the solid, cracked tile of the floor, the heavy silence in his head was abruptly shattered.

The air blew back in, carrying a wall of sound that made his stomach drop. High-pitched screams, hysterical wails, and the chaotic thud of hundreds of panicked feet echoing across the upper balconies cut through the smoke.

"Help! Someone help us!"

"Get to the emergency doors! Move!"

"It's gonna kill us all!"

The raw terror bleeding through the marketplace made the hair on the back of Itsuki's neck stand on end. He clutched his injured arm against his chest, his eyes wide as he looked up through the drifting dust. People were still running, tripping over one another in a mad dash to escape, but the exit routes were jammed, turning the shopping center into a total slaughterhouse.

"Shit..." Itsuki breathed, his chest heaving as the grim reality hit him. "This isn't just an earthquake... we're trapped in here with that damn thing."

"I gotta find Nene..." Itsuki muttered, the haze in his mind instantly clearing as a sharp focus took over.

He shoved his good hand into his pocket, his fingers frantically locking around his smartphone. He pulled it out, praying for a miracle, but his heart sank the second he looked down. The impact from the fall had shattered the screen into a web of splintered glass, rendering the display completely black and totally useless.

"Damn it!" he cursed, slamming the dead piece of plastic back into his pocket.

Without a working phone and zero signal anyway, he couldn't call her or check her location. He was completely on his own. Holding his throbbing elbow tight against his ribs, Itsuki gritted his teeth against the pain and started limping forward through the haze, his eyes scanning the chaotic, smoke-filled corridors for any sign of her.

Only a couple of meters away, the ghoul lingered in the open space, its terrifying posture illuminated by the sparse light pouring through the shattered ceiling. It paced back and forth, sniffing the air with unnatural precision, when it suddenly unleashed a ear-splitting screech.

The violent sound sent a jolt of pure panic straight through Nene. Her hands jerked, nearly sending her camera crashing to the tile floor, but after a few agonizing, frantic fumbles, she managed to catch it.

"Eeek!" a high squeak escaped her lips.

Instantly, she clapped both hands over her mouth and pulled back fully behind the edge of the pillar, her blood running cold as she realized the creature's head had snapped straight in her direction.

She was utterly petrified, balanced precariously on the razor-thin edge of life and death.

I'm so stupid... Stupid, stupid, stupid! she berated herself, her mind racing out of control. She squeezed her eyes shut, pressing the heavy camera tight against her chest as if it could shield her heart. Don't come here... please, just don't come over here... she pleaded silently, repeating the mantra over and over in her head while the heavy, unnatural scrapes of the ghoul's limbs echoed against the polished floor.

Yet, strangely, the creature didn't sprint toward her corner. Something was keeping it at a deliberate, measured pace. It wasn't actively chasing the fleeing crowds or hunting down easy prey; it simply stood there, prowling, searching for someone specific. A target known only to itself.

By now, the majority of the civilians and private bodyguards had successfully broken past the exits and fled the building, leaving only a scattered few trapped inside. But standing directly in the crosshairs of this lingering nightmare were Nene and Itsuki.
