Michael's decision to skip lunch came as no shock to me. The contempt radiating from him whenever Kenneth was around could cut through steel.

The shift in Michael's demeanor had been immediate the second Kenneth entered Orton's office. Before that moment, he'd been tense but manageable, gradually warming to a bearable temperature as our business discussion progressed. But Kenneth's arrival changed everything. Michael's face transformed into a mask of barely contained revulsion, his disgust written across every sharp angle of his features.

Whatever history existed between these two men went far beyond simple professional rivalry. Michael's reaction screamed of deep-seated fury and bitter resentment. My mind flashed back to that afternoon by the pool, remembering the rage that had blazed in his eyes when he'd discovered me swimming with Kenneth.
