Chapter 177 — First Foundations of the Island Village

S.C. 1512 — Afternoon

Hidden Island — Central Clearing

The midday sun filtered softly through the treetops as the island bustled with a new kind of movement.

Not fear.

Not panic.

Not starvation.

Work.

For the first time in their lives, many of the refugees moved with purpose instead of desperation.

Ren stood in front of the longhouse, a rolled blueprint under his arm, surveying the clearing where dirt paths would soon become roads and makeshift tents would turn into proper homes.

Zemo sat beside him, watching everyone with alert but gentle eyes.

Leo approached first, notebook in hand.

"Ren, we've finished distributing tasks. Want the report?"

"Tell me," Ren said.

Leo flipped a page.

"Out of the twenty-eight new arrivals, eighteen are strong enough for physical work, six can do light duties, and four need rest and healing."

Ren nodded. "Good. Let's start today."

1. The First Real Work Crew

The strong refugees—men and women alike—gathered in the clearing.

Some still walked with a limp.

Some still had bandaged hands.

But their eyes held something new: hope mixed with uncertainty.

Ren unrolled the blueprint on a wooden table.

It wasn't just a drawing.

It was the beginning of a village.

"Today," Ren began, voice steady, "we start building the first permanent homes."

The refugees leaned closer.

Bram stood beside Ren, tapping the blueprint.

"We're starting with simple structures first—two-room wooden houses. Light, quick to build, strong enough for the island weather."

Ren pointed.

"These marked areas will be the first Residence Zone. Three houses this week. More after."

The workers exchanged looks—disbelief, excitement, doubt.

A man raised his hand hesitantly.

"Are… are we really allowed to live in these houses?"

Ren blinked. "Of course. Why do you ask?"

The man swallowed.

"Because all our lives… we've only been allowed to live where nobles don't look."

Ren's jaw clenched softly.

Not pity.

Not anger.

But a cold understanding of how broken Goa Kingdom was.

"You live where I say," Ren replied firmly. "And I say you live here."

Some of the refugees teared up quietly.

2. Bram Takes Charge

Bram stepped forward, clapping his hands loudly.

"All right, everyone. Grab tools—we start by clearing the land!"

His booming, cheerful voice cut through the lingering gloom.

The workers moved.

The moment they touched the saws, shovels, and KEA-enhanced axes, they froze.

One woman whispered, astonished:

"These tools… they're so sharp…"

Another man swung an axe, and the tree fell in one clean slice.

"Boss Ren… how did you—"

"They're just tools," Ren said, brushing it off.

They didn't need to know the KEA alloy secret.

They only needed to use the strength it gave them.

3. Kiro Leads the Light-Duty Group

Meanwhile, Kiro supervised the lighter workers—mostly women and older men.

He gently guided them:

"These herbs—sort by leaf size and dryness. You can do it sitting down."

"And these ropes—twist them evenly. You'll help reinforce roofs later."

"And kids, you follow Mira."

Two kids saluted him dramatically.

"You got it, big brother Kiro!"

A faint smile cracked on his usually calm face.

4. Mira: The Gentle Instructor

Mira worked in a shaded area beside the longhouse, laying out fabric strips and small wooden frames.

She addressed the weakest group—the four who were still recovering.

"You don't need to push yourselves. Just sit comfortably. Help me sew bedding and blankets for the new houses."

A woman with trembling hands whispered:

"I… I haven't sewn in years."

"That's fine," Mira said warmly. "Your hands will remember."

By the time an hour passed, the refugees were laughing quietly as Mira corrected their stitches.

Hope tasted different when it came through gentle work.

5. The First Wall Goes Up

By late afternoon, the first set of logs had been cut, measured, and carried.

A team of six lifted the first wall frame.

"On three!"

"One—two—three!"

The wall rose.

Everyone stopped to stare.

It was simple.

Just a wooden frame.

But for people who had lived in trash heaps… it was everything.

A woman gasped and covered her mouth.

A child pointed, eyes shining.

Ren watched silently from the side.

Not smiling.

Not basking in praise.

Just… observing.

This was how real foundations were built.

One day at a time.

One wall at a time.

One life at a time.

6. Evening Reflection

When the shadows grew long, Ren ordered the work to stop.

"Rest is also part of building," he said. "Continue tomorrow."

Workers stretched out near the longhouse, exhausted but satisfied.

Some hummed softly.

Some ate freshly cooked stew.

Some stared at the rising wall until nightfall, as if afraid it might disappear.

Zemo sprawled across Ren's legs, snoring gently.

Leo sat beside Ren, scribbling notes.

"Day one," he said. "We actually built something."

Ren replied quietly:

"No… they built something. We just gave direction."

Leo smiled faintly.

"You're still the one who made this possible."

Ren didn't answer.

Instead, he watched the workers.

People who used to dig through trash.

Now building homes with steady hands.

Something warm settled in his chest.

Not pride.

Responsibility.

7. A New Beginning

As night covered the island, the single wall stood firm, lit by lantern light.

It wasn't just wood.

It was the beginning of a village.

The beginning of a future.

And the beginning of the next phase:

Steam Engines.

Shipyard.

Genetic Program.

Fortified Walls.

And a community ready to rise.

Ren whispered to Zemo:

"This is only the first step."

Zemo wagged his tail in agreement.
