Chapter 169 - Chapter 169 — The Whispering Island

Chapter 169 — The Whispering Island

S.C. 1511 — Mid March

Hidden Island — Deep Forest

The morning breeze was calm.

Birds fluttered between branches.

Sunlight flickered through moving leaves.

But Ren wasn't paying attention to any of those with his eyes.

He was listening—

not to sound,

but to the shifting hum of life across the island.

A faint pulse here.

A heartbeat there.

A small scurry of paws under bushes.

His telepathy had grown steadily over the weeks,

and today was the first time he could truly feel the entire island breathing.

Sensing the Forest

Zemo sat beside him, pupils dilated, ears alert.

Ren closed his eyes.

"Alright… let's try extending the field again."

A soft pulse radiated outward from his mind—

like invisible ripples across a pond.

Bushes rustled.

Birds startled.

A squirrel paused in mid-step.

Ren exhaled slowly as the world painted itself across his mind:

A boar sleeping under a fallen log

Two foxes sneaking along a root

A flock of small birds perched on a high branch

Insects crawling under leaves

The steady pulse of Zemo's heart beside him

The sensory map expanded farther than yesterday.

"Two more meters," Ren murmured.

"Good."

Zemo barked softly.

Ren patted his head.

"Yeah. You helped."

The Voices of Nature

At first, it wasn't voices—

just impulses.

Hunger.

Movement.

Fear.

Curiosity.

Warmth.

Animals didn't think in words.

But their instinctual pulses flowed into Ren like faint emotional brushstrokes.

A bird's nervous flutter.

A fox's confident trot.

A rabbit's startled hop.

Ren focused gently on one nearby creature—

a small wildcat stalking something in the bushes.

His telepathy brushed against it.

"…move… quiet… food… closer…"

He pulled away quickly.

Still too strong.

Still too intrusive.

But clearer than ever before.

Kiro Arrives

Crunch—crunch—

Kiro stepped through the brush, wiping sweat from his brow.

"There you are. Everyone was looking for you."

Ren opened his eyes.

"Sorry. I was testing the range."

Kiro sat beside him.

"How much now?"

"About a hundred meters," Ren answered. "A little more if I really push."

Kiro whistled.

"You can sense everything here, huh?"

"Everything alive," Ren corrected. "Not thoughts. Just… patterns."

"That's still terrifying."

Ren smirked.

"You get used to it."

"No. No normal person gets used to that."

Zemo barked in agreement—at Kiro.

Luffy's Loud Arrival

"REN!! KIRO!! ZEMO!!!"

Both froze as the telepathic field quivered—

a vibration so explosive and chaotic that Ren had only one thought:

Luffy.

The boy burst out of the bushes in a swirl of leaves.

"LOOK WHAT I FOUND!"

He held up a crooked stick.

"It looks like a sword!!"

Ren and Kiro exchanged a look.

Kiro sighed.

"You brought him here during telepathy tests?"

Ren shook his head.

"No, he found us."

Luffy swung the crooked stick wildly.

"SWORD TRAINING TIME!!"

Zemo dodged the stick effortlessly and barked mockingly.

Luffy chased him.

Zemo kept dodging.

Ren watched them circle through the clearing,

shaking his head with a small smile.

Testing Telepathy With Moving Targets

Kiro asked, "Can you track Luffy with that telepathic thing?"

Ren exhaled.

"Let's see."

He extended the pulse again.

Luffy was a chaotic explosion—

burst of energy, sudden stops, loud impulses.

"…meat… ZEMO STOP RUNNING… sword… hungry… meat… REN LOOK—"

Ren pulled back instantly, clutching his forehead.

Kiro burst out laughing.

"Too much?"

"His mind is… very loud."

"That's Luffy for you."

They both watched Luffy tumble, roll, jump, chase Zemo, then fall again.

Ren smiled tiredly.

"Him alone feels like ten animals."

"Strong future pirate captain," Kiro said jokingly.

Ren didn't answer.

Just watched Luffy laugh like the world had no problems.

Extending the Range Further

Once Luffy tired himself out and began drawing circles in the mud,

Ren resumed testing.

Zemo sat beside him, mirroring every focus shift like a trained partner.

Ren's voice was calm:

"Let's push farther… slowly."

The pulse spread again—

cool, wide, gentle.

This time, Ren felt:

A herd of deer grazing deeper inland.

A nesting bird far up the cliff.

A school of fish swimming just off the eastern shore.

Two boars wandering through the west forest.

Insects crawling under bark.

Roots absorbing water.

Kiro watched him quietly.

"How do you see all that?"

Ren whispered:

"I don't see.

I feel their patterns.

Their presence.

Their movement."

He placed a hand over his chest.

"It all comes through here."

Zemo nudged him gently, sensing Ren's mental strain.

The Island is Alive

Ren mapped the terrain mentally:

every burrow

every nest

every wandering creature

every shifting vibration in the soil

every flutter of wings

every ripple in the water

He could almost draw a map of the entire island with his eyes closed.

It wasn't perfect—

but close enough to feel like the island was talking to him.

Zemo barked.

Ren nodded.

"Let's stop. My head is starting to feel tight."

Kiro stood and offered him a hand.

Ren grabbed it and pulled himself up.

"Come on," Kiro said. "Makino made lunch. Luffy will eat everything if we're late."

"True."

Walking Back Together

Luffy marched ahead swinging his crooked "sword."

Zemo followed behind him, pretending to be threatened.

Kael and Jin were waving in the distance.

Mira had set a picnic cloth with Makino.

Ren walked in the middle—

head clearer than earlier,

senses still humming softly.

His telepathic field shrank to a comfortable radius.

He felt the island behind him continue its calm rhythm.

Alive.

Vibrant.

Constant.

Ren smiled faintly.

"It finally feels connected."

Kiro nodded silently beside him.
