Chapter 10 - Chapter 9 - Monsters From the Void

The Riftborn screamed—an unearthly, hollow shriek that rattled the crystal trees and shattered lantern-lights hanging in the air. Shadows spilled from its body like smoke crawling across the ground, reaching for Aira's feet.

Kael fought like a man carved from fire and fury. His golden blade burst with light every time it cut through the creature, but each strike only made the monster reform—stronger, darker, hungrier.

The silver-eyed man staggered backward, clutching his infected arm. The shadow spreading through it pulsed like living veins.

"Aira—don't come closer!" he gasped. "It spreads through breath… through touch."

Kael shot him a look of pure rage. "I told you—your presence draws them!"

The silver-eyed man snarled. "If I hadn't shoved her out of the way, she would be dead!"

Aira trembled, torn between them as the ground vibrated with the creature's footsteps.

The Oracle's voice echoed again, colder this time:

"This world corrects itself by unleashing its own nightmares.

The Void stirs, and the Riftborn are only its beginning."

Aira looked up sharply. "Void?"

The Oracle pointed at the creature. "A realm where erased fates rot. It smells a broken thread… and you are the brightest anomaly."

The Riftborn turned its empty eyes toward Aira.

Kael reacted instantly—throwing himself between her and the beast.

"Aira—RUN!"

But the ground split open beneath her, cracks glowing like liquid ink. Tendrils shot upward, trying to pull her into the abyss.

Aira screamed.

Kael lunged, grabbing her arm—

but one of the shadow tendrils wrapped around his leg, yanking him downward.

His sword clattered to the ground.

"KAEL!" Aira cried.

The Riftborn leapt for him—its claws aimed at his throat.

The silver-eyed man tried to intervene, but collapsed to his knee, darkness crawling up his chest.

Aira's heart slammed painfully.

Kael was going to die.

Again.

Just like in the vision.

No.

Not again.

"Aira," Kael gasped, still being pulled down. "Stay back—don't risk yourself—"

His voice broke as the creature pounced.

Aira didn't think.

Didn't breathe.

She ran.

Straight toward the monster.
