Chapter 2 - Kushida Kikyo

They didn't spend much time on the bus.

Soon, they arrived at the school gate, and Natsuki Subaru got off with all the other uniformed students.

It was just as Kikyo Kushida had mentioned on the bus; the school prohibited contact with the outside world. All personal electronic devices were confiscated upon entry, and each person was issued a new communication device.

'Tokyo Metropolitan Advanced Nurturing High School.'

'A school I've never heard of before. Am I just ignorant, or is it that…'

'I've been transported to a brand new world again?'

Walking along the school path with Kikyo Kushida, Natsuki Subaru continued to ponder.

It seemed like only a short while had passed, but Natsuki Subaru had already returned five times. Aside from the initial tentative return on the bus, he hadn't come to the school in the other four instances, choosing instead to leave on his own.

The second return took place a week after his arrival. Natsuki Subaru spent that week learning about this world and concluded that it was vastly different from the one he remembered.

At that point, between the possibilities of being transported to another world or being in an illusion, Natsuki Subaru leaned more towards the latter.

The third time was a month after his arrival, and the return point was still the bus at the very beginning.

By then, the scales in Natsuki Subaru's mind had slowly started to shift. At the same time, he became certain that a powerful, unseen hand was manipulating him from behind the scenes.

This was something Natsuki Subaru had felt strongly long ago, back during his time as the Purge King. Every update to his return point coincided with his choices leading him to a new stage.

To confirm this, Natsuki Subaru extended the fourth and fifth loops to half a year and a full year, respectively. During these periods, he used various methods to try and push his life into a completely new phase.

The final result was obvious: the starting point remained the bus at the very beginning.

His life had not entered a 'new' phase. At the same time, Natsuki Subaru became almost certain that he had been transported to a brand new world.

However, compared to the excitement of his first transportation, this second one only left the current Natsuki Subaru feeling a profound exhaustion.

He also came to understand about seventy to eighty percent of 'his' situation in this world. 'His' name was still 'Natsuki Subaru,' but 'his' parents had been dead for many years, which was why the call didn't go through—the number for his parents simply didn't exist.

There were two reasons for enrolling in this Tokyo Metropolitan Advanced Nurturing High School. First, the school was famous; its graduates had a one hundred percent employment and college acceptance rate, which was very appealing.

The second reason was that 'he' was running low on money. The school provided full room and board, and aside from being unable to contact the outside world for three years, it had no drawbacks.

But since 'he' had no relatives left, this drawback wasn't a drawback at all.

So, without a doubt, the 'him' of this world had decisively accepted the school's invitation and become a first-year student. He was now here to complete the enrollment procedures.

"Natsuki-kun, shall we exchange contact info?"

Before Natsuki Subaru could think further, Kikyo Kushida, standing beside him, cheerfully held her phone out to him. It was the daily communication device issued by the school for internal use—a student terminal.

"Sure, no problem."

'Good thing Halibel isn't here, or else I would've had to reset just now.'

Natsuki Subaru suppressed his annoyance at having his thoughts interrupted by Kikyo Kushida, nodded with a smile, and exchanged contact information with her.

He might have been unaccustomed to modern society right after arriving, but now, after resetting five times, Natsuki Subaru had regained his composure for living in the modern world.

Although the world was still drained of color, everything looking gray and hazy, at least Natsuki Subaru didn't have to worry about the risk of dying at any moment.

If he had to compare it with the previous fantasy world, Natsuki Subaru preferred this current one a little more.

Of course, it would be even better if he could possess something 'genuine'.

'Does something genuine exist in this world?'

Natsuki Subaru thought this as he handed the phone back to Kikyo Kushida, giving her another look.

Kikyo Kushida might have thought her performance was perfect and her acting skills were top-notch, but in front of Natsuki Subaru, the Purge King who had weathered countless storms of blood, she was far too naive.

From just his first glance at Kikyo Kushida, Natsuki Subaru had already seen the darkness beneath her energetic, cheerful mask. Kikyo Kushida was a classic 'fake'.

"Kushida-san, you seem quite eager to get my contact info."

"I've never had a girl as pretty as you proactively ask for my contact info before."

Natsuki Subaru smiled slightly at Kikyo Kushida and said, "To be honest, I'm a little flattered."

Unlike the person he was before his very first transportation, when he was a long-term shut-in, that Natsuki Subaru didn't have much interaction with the outside world.

When he first arrived in the other world, his behavior was just an act. He forced himself to appear talkative and sociable, which ended up causing quite a few problems.

It often led to him making a fool of himself, like a clown, saying or doing embarrassing things.

Thinking of this, Natsuki Subaru couldn't help but chuckle silently.

Now, having waded through rivers of blood and dealt with countless hidden daggers behind smiles, Natsuki Subaru was long able to suppress the infinite killing intent in his heart and chat with people with a smile, even with complete composure.

"Hee hee, not at all."

"I just want to become good friends with everyone at school and make wonderful memories together."

Kikyo Kushida said with a laugh, "Natsuki-kun just happened to be my first target~"

"I see."

Natsuki Subaru nodded and said no more.

Wanting to be friends with everyone—that goal itself was probably fine. But whether she genuinely wanted to make wonderful memories together was another matter entirely.

Too naive.

There was no need to reset and use trial and error; with just a few words, he could easily glean about seventy to eighty percent of the real information.

'Back then, I was probably even worse than her.'

Now, Natsuki Subaru stood from a new perspective, re-examining his former self.
