Chapter 19 - Chapter 19: Tension on the Trail to Valentine

[We caught one of Colm O'Driscoll's men today.

The poor bastard revealed the location of Colm's hideout, though we're not sure yet if he's telling the truth.]

[What really worries me is Mike.

Maybe because of the Blackwater disaster, he's been on edge.]

[He's far more cautious than before he even clashed with Dutch.]

[He thinks Dutch's plan to rob Cornwall's private train was reckless.]

[Truth is, it's not just Mike. Hosea, the others… even I'm a little worried.]

[But for now, things look good. Dutch has been busy drawing up plans, many of them daydreams.]

[And with this miserable weather finally clearing, the snow is melting.

We headed east… farther east than I've been in years.]

[Hosea seems to know this region well.

He led us to a livestock town called Valentine.

This will be our temporary place to rest.]

In the temporary camp, Susan Grimshaw barked orders as Mary-Beth, Karen, and the others packed supplies.

Arthur Morgan, like always, sat aside writing in his journal, recording the events of the last few weeks.

"What are you writing, Arthur?"

Mike Walker's voice broke his focus as he walked over.

"Just the things we've been through… and Mike, you shouldn't be cleaning a gun inside camp."

Arthur snapped the journal shut and nodded toward the Colt Mike was oiling.

"Relax. No bullets loaded."

Mike spun the revolver's empty cylinder.

"And we'd better check them properly. Colm's boys roam all over New Hanover."

Arthur's expression hardened at once.

Despite the tension between Mike and Dutch these past weeks, and the strange shift in camp morale, the threat of the O'Driscolls outweighed everything.

"You really trust what that rat said?"

Arthur glanced toward the horses, where Kieran Duffy was tending the stables.

Ever since Mike helped him, Kieran was no longer tied up though the gang still treated him coldly.

Only Mary-Beth and Tilly ever showed him any kindness.

"We'll know once we reach Six Point Cabin," Mike said, holstering the Colt.

"Yeah…" Arthur muttered, a dark look in his eyes.

The feud between the Van der Linde gang and Colm ran deep.

Before Mike could answer, another voice approached.

"So how's Davey doing?"

"I think I can help with something now,"

a familiar tone called out.

Davey Callander approached, holding a steaming cup of coffee.

His shoulder wound bad, but far from fatal was nearly healed.

"You sure?" Mike asked.

"You know me. Just a scratch."

Davey grinned confidently.

"You should prob "

Arthur was cut off by raised voices coming from behind the tents.

"We survived."

"For now, Dutch."

"Hosea… We all make mistakes. But I brought these people together.

I kept them alive. I kept us ahead of the noose!"

Arthur immediately hurried over, worried the argument would escalate.

The rest of the camp, however, barely reacted.

They'd gotten used to Dutch and Hosea arguing ever since Mike publicly challenged Dutch back in the mountains.

Not long after, Dutch strode over with Arthur at his side, a cigar clamped between his teeth.

"Lenny and Micah are scouting ahead," Dutch announced.

"Seeing if the Pinkertons are anywhere nearby."

"Strauss will look for opportunities.

Hosea and I will deal with those bonds we took from the ferry."

"Colm's problem… that's on you boys."

Dutch's smile was easy, confident his tone steady.

But Mike could see through it.

Dutch wasn't happy with him.

Not after being openly challenged.

Not after Mike had swayed the gang's mood.

But Dutch needed fighters right now.

So he swallowed it.

He had no choice.
