[Start of the chapter]

Wintergreen City Pokémon Academy.

At the center of the academy stood a towering, colossal building—the Pokémon Breeding Center.

This was the core building of every Pokémon academy.

Inside the breeding center were thousands of Pokémon eggs that had yet to hatch.

At this moment—

On the incubation rack on the second floor of the center…

A Pokémon egg whose shell was covered in wavy flame-like patterns suddenly began to shake violently.

Inside the egg—

Hirata Shiko stared at his own appearance, his expression utterly stunned.

What's going on!?

Orange skin, a round, chubby little body, big blinking eyes…

And at the end of his tail, a burning flame.

Wasn't this unmistakably the appearance of a Charmander!?

Had he transmigrated?

And turned into a Charmander on top of that!?

"Holy shit!!?"

Shiko spaced out for a long time.

After confirming again and again that he wasn't dreaming, he could only squeeze out those two words to express his shock, anger, and helplessness.

It was one thing to transmigrate.

But he had actually transmigrated into a Pokémon!

How unlucky could you get!!

"So this is a world that's merged with the Pokémon world…"

After finally calming his emotions and sorting out the fragments of memory in his mind,

Shiko at last had a rough understanding of his current situation and circumstances.

A hundred years ago—

The real world and the Pokémon world collided and fused together.

All kinds of Pokémon began appearing in every corner of the world.

Whether sky, ocean, forest, desert, mountains, or cities—

You could find traces of these creatures everywhere.

Faced with this sudden upheaval—

Humanity split into two camps with opposing viewpoints.

One side was the moderate faction.

They advocated taming Pokémon, putting them to use, coexisting peacefully, and benefiting humankind.

The other side was the radical faction.

They believed Pokémon were too wild to tame and called for their extermination in order to maintain absolute human dominance.

In the end, the radicals seized the right to speak.

They began launching extermination campaigns against Pokémon.

However—

Arrogant humans had badly underestimated what Pokémon were capable of.

Forget terrifying legendary Pokémon like Kyogre and Groudon, who could trigger tsunamis and volcanic eruptions.

Even the weakest of Pokémon, Weedle—

The toxin contained in the horn on its head:

Just 0.01 milligrams was enough to kill a person instantly!

It was several times more frightening than the most poisonous native lifeform on the planet!

In this war that dragged on for years—

Humanity lost battle after battle.

At the most dangerous moment—

They had practically been driven to the brink of complete extinction!

But just then—

The discovery of ancient Pokémon ruins in multiple locations brought a turning point.

Humanity began to grasp methods for taming Pokémon.

Genius Trainers emerged one after another.

Combined with the conflicts among Pokémon themselves caused by differences in species and elemental types—

This finally gave humanity a chance to breathe and time to develop.

Later on—

As Trainers grew stronger and stronger, their influence and authority also increased.

The structure of the entire world changed as nations merged together, eventually forming the nine alliances that existed today.

The Wintergreen City Pokémon Academy where Shiko was located

stood in a city under the jurisdiction of the Great Axia Alliance, one of the nine great alliances.

Academies like this—

There were still thousands of them within the Great Axia Alliance alone.

"So that means I'm one of the starter Pokémon for the academy's students to choose from?"

Shiko looked at his own short, clawed hands as he spoke.

"Unbelievable. In my last life I worked myself to death for capitalists; in this life I still have to work for Trainers!?"

Shiko complained, then lay down inside the egg and curled his body up.

Fortunately, the choice between a starter Pokémon and a Trainer went both ways.

As long as he wasn't willing—

No Trainer could forcibly capture him.

And any Pokémon that didn't choose a Trainer—

After hatching, it could continue living in the academy.

Carefree and without worries.

Shiko figured that since he wasn't even human anymore—

He might as well just lie flat and be a total salted-fish slacker.

Live out a safe, steady, comfortable life.

Although he was a Charmander—

And could evolve into a fairly powerful Pokémon like Charizard—

From the memories in his mind, Shiko understood very clearly:

The true Pokémon world was extremely cruel.

In front of legendary Pokémon with overwhelming power that could destroy heaven and earth—

He wouldn't even be able to withstand a simple Tackle from them!

The species you were born as

already determined ninety-nine percent of a Pokémon's growth ceiling.

Games were games.

Reality was reality.

No matter how strong a Charizard was—

It could never be a match for even the weakest third-tier legendary fire-type like Moltres.

After recognizing this reality—

Shiko accepted his fate even more peacefully.

He firmly chose to spend his whole life lying flat in comfort as a salted fish.

Getting him to work hard at training and cultivation—

Unless there was some opportunity that could let him break through his own limits,

an opportunity that would let him keep growing until he could finally rival a creator god at the very end—

Otherwise, forget it.

But how could something like that exist?

That kind of thing only happened in dreams!

Thinking of this—

Shiko lazily stretched out and lay back down inside the eggshell.

Then he started to sleep soundly.

[Ding! Host meets system criteria. Lying Flat System has been activated!]

The sudden mechanical electronic voice exploded in his mind—

Startling Shiko so much that he shot upright.

Before he could recover—

Right before his eyes—

A semi-transparent data panel began to appear and float into view.
