Chapter 17 - The Grandma’s Logic

(Speaker: finding historical documents usually boring. finding historical documents that explain why universe hates you? slightly more engaging. slightly.)

library smelled like trapped time. paper dust. ink. fading magic.

shelves high. scrolls tight. but desk was center of universe.

chair pushed back. as if she just stood up. quill dry in inkwell. open book.

meera approached. hands trembling. kael flanked her. silent guardian. arin watched door. spear ready against ghosts. Or librarians.

"open it," kael murmured.

meera touched page. leather cracked. paper brittle.

handwriting shaky. terrified. same as mahi's copy but... realer. ink stained with something dark. tears? blood? wine?

Day 456.Silence is worse than screaming.I wake up and for second I forget. I reach for water. think of morning prayer. then remember.I am only one left.

meera read aloud. voice echoing in dead room.

Shepherd didn't kill them. Didn't burn them. Just Took.Like weeding garden. Plucked 723 souls because I said no.Is this mercy? Or torture?

"torture," kael growled. "definitely torture."

meera turned page. skipping days of despair. looking for logic. purpose.

Day 2000.Found pattern.Studied old star charts. Studied Stoneback legends. Before empire. Before fall.Shepherd isn't god. Isn't demon.It's... Gardener.

gardener? cosmic gardener?

We are crops. Civilizations are seasons. It offers fertilizer (power/ascension). If we accept, we grow huge. strong. But we become ITS crop. Harvested when ripe.If we refuse... we are weeds. Plucked so we don't choke the others.

"we're weeds?" arin asked. indignant. "we built settlements! we survived!"

"weeds survive best," meera said. dark smile. "stubborn things."

she read on.

But there's glitch. Anomaly.Legends speak of Third Harvest. The Wild Growth. When crop refuses fertilizer but DOESN'T die. Doesn't wither. When it grows... sideways. Deep roots. Tangled.

If crop becomes stronger than Gardener... Gardener can't pluck.Requires too much energy. Risks damage to soil.So Gardener watches. Waits.

I think that's why I'm alive. Why I wasn't plucked with others.I was Control Group.Shepherd wanted to see if Refusal = Death. It did. For my clan. Because I refused ALONE.

meera stopped. fingers tracing words. Refused Alone.

"grandmother figured it out," she whispered. realization hitting like physical blow. "she figured out the game."

"what game?" kael asked.

"test isn't about power. it's about... connection. she refused power but kept isolation. she was still playing by Shepherd's rules. Individual vs Cosmic."

"so how do we cheat?" arin asked.

meera pointed to last entry.

If I had stood with them. If 723 Stonebacks had said NO together. If our roots were tangled so deep that pulling one meant pulling mountain...Shepherd couldn't have plucked us.It would've had to BURN the field. Or LEAVE it.

We made it easy. We were separate stalks.Lesson for future:Don't be stalk. Be thicket. Be forest. Be mountain.

kael stepped closer. hand on her shoulder. heavy. grounding. "we are thicekt," he said. struggling with metaphor but getting spirit. "we are pack."

"yes," meera agreed. tear sliding down cheek. not sad. fierce. "she warned us. she gave us the cheat code."

suddenly library hummed. lights flickered. low drone. deep. vibrating in chest.

DOOOOOOOM.

"what's that?" arin yelled. backing away from door.

"security system?" kael guessed.

"no," meera said. looking at ceiling. through rock. through glass. to sky. "it knows we read it."

Shepherd.

"it's watching," she realized. "gardener shaking the pot. seeing if weeds tremble."

kael drew blades. teeth bared at ceiling. "let it watch. let it see teeth."

"grab the journals," meera ordered. shoving books into pack. "all of them. knowledge is ammo."

room shook. dust falling. "time to go!" arin shouted.

they ran. up stairs. past ghosts. past glass garden.

into vibrating world.

(Speaker: knowledge acquired. achievement unlocked: 'existential dread'. bonus reward: impending doom. yay.)

Scene: The Escape — Goal: Survive the Gaze | Conflict: Presure | Result: Will Tested

outside wasn't same. sky purple. bruising. air heavy. fluid.

moving felt like swimming in mercury.

"pressure!" arin gasped. knees buckling. "can't... breathe..."

"haki," meera thought. wild association. "spiritual pressure. it's trying to crush us."

kael stood tall. struggling. muscles trembling. veins popping. "stand up!" he roared at arin. "alpha command! stand!"

arin forced himself up. whimpering. bleeding from nose. "up. up."

meera felt it too. weight of planet on shoulders. voice in head. not words. feeling.

SUBMIT. BREAK. WITHER.

"no," she gritted out.

YOU ARE SMALL. YOU ARE WEED.

"weeds... break... concrete," she snarled.

shimmer on skin returned. that heat-haze. it flared. not green this time. gold.

meera pushed back. mental shove against sky.

GET OUT OF MY HEAD.

pressure popped. like bubble bursting.

sky returned to blue. air thin again. arin collapsed. gasping. "gods... what was that?"

"hello," meera said. looking up. staring at nothing. "that was hello."

kael wiped blood from nose. grinning. terrifying savage grin. "it blinked," he said. "it pushed. we pushed back. it blinked."

"it's testing," meera said. "checking if we're ripe or rot."

"we're neither," kael said. helping arin up. "we're rocks. rocks don't rot."

meera looked at journals in pack. weight heavy. but good heavy.

"ready to go home?" she asked.

"please," arin wheezed. "somewhere without gravity warping. or voices."

"home," kael agreed.

they walked away. leaving red hollow silent again. but different. secret was out. game was changed.

(Speaker: round one to team underdog. shepherd: 0. outcasts: 1. don't get cocky though. boss fight loading...)
