CHAPTER 3 — IRONHEART
The home crowd at West Haven High was loud enough to shake the bleachers. Friday Night Lights had a way of turning ordinary teenagers into giants, but tonight felt different. The air crackled with an energy Jaden could feel under his skin.
He stood on the sideline in full pads, helmet tucked under his arm. He was not expected to play tonight. He was still the second quarterback. But something deep inside him whispered,
You will step onto the field tonight.
Warmups
Jaden threw with the receivers. Each pass was crisp, sharp, and placed exactly where it needed to be. The scout team receivers kept staring at him between catches.
"Brooks, are you sure you are not hiding some kind of bionic arm?" one joked.
Jaden laughed softly."Just working."
But even he knew it was more than that.
Kickoff
The game began rough. The Ridgeview Panthers had a monstrous defensive line and a secondary that hunted interceptions like predators.
The starting quarterback, Walsh, struggled from the beginning.
First drive: three and out.Second drive: sack, sack, interception.Third drive: a brutal hit that shook the entire stadium.
Walsh limped off the field, helmet dangling from his hand, face drained of color.
Coach Daniels rushed to him."You good?"
Walsh shook his head. "I cannot plant my foot. Something is wrong."
Coach Daniels turned slowly toward Jaden.
The noise of the stadium faded into nothing. The moment stretched and held.
"Brooks," Coach said. "Get your helmet."
Jaden did not hesitate.
Stepping Into the Spotlight
The crowd reacted instantly. Some cheered. Some groaned. But everyone watched.
Jaden jogged into the huddle, calm and focused.
His teammates looked unsure.
"Alright," Jaden said, steady and controlled. "We follow Coach's plan. Short throws. Fast reads. Trust me."
Something in his voice made them believe him.
First snap.First throw.A clean five yard hitch.
Second throw. An eight yard out. Perfect placement.
Third throw.A sharp slant that cut the defense in half.
The offense woke up.The crowd noticed.Coach Daniels stared in disbelief.
"Where has this kid been hiding?" the offensive coordinator whispered.
The Hit
Late in the drive, the defense sent a heavy blitz. Jaden recognized it too late. A linebacker crashed into him from the blind side.
The hit was violent.
The entire stadium gasped.
But Jaden rose instantly.
Helmet straight. Eyes calm. Breathing steady.
The Panthers linebacker blinked."Man… how did you get up that fast?"
Jaden did not answer. He simply walked back to the huddle.
That moment, that unshakable poise, planted the first seed of his nickname.
The Drive Continues
On third and fourteen, with pressure closing in again, Jaden rolled left, slipped out of a tackle, set his feet, and fired a missile downfield.
The receiver toe tapped the sideline. First down.
The stadium exploded.
Two plays later, Jaden floated a perfect pass over a defender for West Haven's first touchdown.
West Haven 7. Ridgeview 10.
Whispers began immediately.
"He is built different.""He did not even feel that hit.""Brooks is locked in."
On the sideline, Darius, the hard hitting linebacker from practice, smirked.
"You are not human, man."
Halftime
Coach Daniels pulled Jaden aside.
"Listen," he said quietly. "I do not know what switched on in you this week… but do not lose it. Keep your reads sharp. Protect the ball. You can win this game."
Jaden nodded."I have got this, Coach."
Inside him, the serum hummed like a quiet storm waiting for release.
Second Half — The Moment
Third quarter.Ridgeview leading 17 to 10.
Facing second and long, the Panthers blitzed again. Three defenders broke through the line.
Jaden should have been crushed.
Instead…
He stepped. He spun.He slipped between bodies with impossible fluidity, like water moving around rocks.
The crowd roared.
He planted his foot and launched a deep bomb, forty five yards, directly into the receiver's stride.
Touchdown.
Tie game.
People were not just cheering now.
They were staring.Pointing.Whispering.
"He does not break.""He does not stay down.""He has an iron heart."
From the stands, a chant started.
"Ironheart!""Ironheart Brooks!"
It spread.Grew.Thundered through the stadium.
Jaden Alexander Brooks, the young backup quarterback, officially had a name.
Final Drive
The score was tied 24 to 24 with fifty seven seconds left.
Coach Daniels handed Jaden the play sheet."You want to win this game?"
Jaden met his eyes."Yes, sir."
"Then take it."
Jaden took it.
He carved through the defense with calm precision.
Quick outs.Sideline throws.A clutch scramble.Another strike under pressure.
With seven seconds left, West Haven lined up for the final play.
Coach called a safe run to set up a field goal.
Jaden shook his head.
"We can win it now."
He checked the play at the line.
Fade route. End zone. Trust his arm.
Snap.
He lofted a perfect spiral.
The receiver leaped.
Caught it.
Touchdown.
Game winner.
The stadium erupted like a volcanic blast.
After the Game
Reporters swarmed. Teammates lifted him into the air.
"Ironheart! Ironheart! Ironheart!"
Jaden looked up at the lights, heart pounding, mind clear.
He felt alive.Powerful.Purposeful.
Zero point two percent. One game. One nickname.
And the legend had only just begun.
