Chapter 45 - Mystery

The fog continued to swirl around the ravine, a thick white curtain that seemed to hum with a strange, static energy. As the silence stretched, my vision began to flicker—not with the usual violet HUD, but with a jagged, pulsing red warning that flared at the edges of my consciousness.

[ SYSTEM URGENT MISSION: LEGACY SYNC ]

[ OBJECTIVE: CONTINUE THE JOURNEY OF 'USER 001'—NAME: RHYS. ]

[ WARNING: UNRESOLVED TIMELINE DETECTED. FAILURE TO SYNC WILL LEAD TO SYSTEM DEGRADATION. ]

[ STATUS: INITIATING TRANCE SLEEP. ]

"Lucas?" Rishie's voice sounded like it was coming from the bottom of a deep well. "You're staring into space again. Are you even listening?"

I didn't answer. I couldn't. My body went limp against the log, my head falling back as a heavy, artificial slumber claimed me. Through the haze, I heard Chen Yue's calm, proactive voice. "Let him sleep, Rishie. He's been carrying the weight of a world we can't see."

I wasn't in the Ozarks anymore. I was inside a mind that wasn't mine, living a life that felt like a series of cruel jokes.

The first vision hit me with the force of a physical blow. I was standing in a small, cramped room—Rhys's room. A landline phone was clutched in my trembling hand. A melodious voice, beautiful yet cold, echoed through the receiver: "I am calling from Reel Estates. We have to inform you that your rent is 3 months due... you'll be evicted from the house in two weeks". The desperation was oily and thick. I felt Rhys's heart break; this was the home where his parents had died, the only place he belonged.

Suddenly, the world vibrated. I pulled a phone from my pocket. A text message glared back, a second blow to a man already down: "Your school dues have reached an amount we cannot ignore... the amount you're required to clear is 50,000 dollars". I felt the sheer unfairness of it—the world crushing the "dregs of society" just for existing.

The scene shifted. I was at a construction site, my hands calloused and dirty. I was late. Mr. Garrison, a man whose gaze made me tremble, shattered my spirit further: "You're gonna receive half-wages!". I couldn't retort. I needed every cent. I was assigned to inspect far-off buildings scheduled for demolition.

I entered the sixth building, a grandiose structure that felt haunted by sleeping demons. It was a place of deep poverty, stripped of furniture. Then, something caught my eye—an upside-down portrait of a lion. I moved to arrange it properly, and as I unhinged it, the world changed. Behind the drawing was a vault.

I reached out. It opened. Inside was a black suitcase.

My hands pulsated with anxiety as I unhinged the locks on the floor of my house. Inside was nothing impressive at first: an ordinary-looking key and a note. But the note held the keys to a kingdom: "Augustus Bank. Safe number: 3801". Beneath it lay an artificial iris, a tool to bypass the very scanners that kept the world out.

The vision accelerated. I was at Augustus Bank, dressed as a "country bumpkin," being led through a lavished room by a gentleman in a black suit. I aligned my eye with the scanner. Beep. The light turned green. I opened Safe 3801 and found it: a company deed for Fantasm Investments and a bank account number.

I saw the deed, a document that made Rhys feel like he was becoming a billionaire. Fantasm wasn't just a company; it was one of the biggest firms in the nation, with a hand in politics, transport, and food. I watched as Rhys, with a mischievous grin and a mind in "ecstasmic calamity," signed his name as the successor to a mysterious figure named Aurea.

My eyes snapped open. The fog was still there, but the world looked different. The System hummed in my ear, its voice no longer just a tool, but a companion in a mystery.

[ SYSTEM OPINION: RHYS SIGNED THE DEED, BUT HE NEVER GOT TO SIT IN THE CHAIR. ]

[ MISSION UPDATED: FIND THE ARCHITECT OF THE EMPTY OFFICE. ]

"You're awake," Chen Yue said, her eyes searching mine. "You were muttering a name. Aurea."

I sat up, the humor returning to my voice, though it was sharper now. "Just an old business partner, Yue. Apparently, I've inherited some very expensive paperwork and a safe that's been waiting far too long to be opened."

Rishie looked at me, her anger fading into a quiet, focused worry. "Lucas, you're scaring me. You're talking like you're not even here."

"I'm here, Rishie," I said, stretching my limbs and feeling the Endurance Protocol hum. "I'm just realizing that the 'Mogul' isn't looking for a new genius. They're looking for the man who signed Rhys's name."

I stood up, looking toward the ridge. "Stevens is still lost, the fog is thick, and I have a multibillion-dollar company to claim. Who's hungry?"
