Chapter 27 - Lines That Cannot Be Unseen

The following morning, Ridgewood International felt different.

Not quieter. Not calmer.

Sharper.

Maya sensed it the moment she stepped through the front gates. Conversations stopped too abruptly. Eyes lingered too long. People were no longer whispering behind her back, but around her, openly unsure of how to treat her now.

She kept her head high.

Liam was waiting near the lockers, exactly where he said he would be. The moment their eyes met, something inside her settled. His gaze anchored her, steady and unflinching.

You good? he asked as she approached.

She nodded. Better than I expected.

He gave a small smile, one meant only for her, then fell into step beside her as they walked down the hall.

Some students stared. Others nodded in quiet acknowledgment. A few looked away, guilt etched into their faces.

Tessa caught up to them near the science wing, her expression tight but relieved.

The school board is involved now, she said under her breath. They suspended Vanessa pending a full investigation.

Maya absorbed the words slowly. Suspended.

And her parents? Maya asked.

Already here. Lawyers too.

Liam's jaw tightened slightly, but he said nothing.

Classes blurred together that day. Teachers spoke, but attention drifted. Every phone buzz carried new speculation, new angles, new opinions. The truth had broken something open, and now everyone was scrambling to decide where they stood.

By lunchtime, Maya needed air.

She slipped out to the bleachers, sitting on the lowest step, wrapping her arms around herself. The sky was overcast, clouds heavy and low.

Footsteps approached.

She did not have to look up.

You disappeared, Liam said softly.

She managed a small smile. Needed space to think.

He sat beside her, close but not crowding her.

Thinking about what?

About how fast everything changed, she said. Yesterday I was invisible. Today everyone knows my name.

He studied her profile. Does that scare you?

A little, she admitted. But not like before.

Why not?

Because I am not alone anymore.

His eyes darkened at that, something unreadable flickering through them.

You were never weak, Maya. You just did not know how powerful your presence was.

She glanced at him. You always talk like you see more than everyone else.

Maybe I do.

Their shoulders brushed. The contact sent a quiet shiver through her.

Liam, she said after a moment. What happens when this ends? When the drama fades?

He turned fully toward her. Then we see what is left when the noise is gone.

And what if people try to tear us apart?

A corner of his mouth lifted. Let them try.

The confidence in him was intoxicating.

Before she could respond, the sound of footsteps echoed behind them. A familiar voice cleared its throat.

Maya. Liam.

They turned to see Principal Harrington standing a few feet away, his expression grave.

We need to speak with you both, he said. In my office. Now.

Maya's heart skipped.

Liam rose first, offering her his hand. Whatever this is, he said quietly, I am with you.

She took his hand, gripping it tightly.

As they followed the principal back toward the building, Maya felt it again.

That shift.

The sense that another line was about to be crossed.

And once crossed, nothing would ever look the same again.
