POV: Iris Hartwell
Her phone rang while she was making coffee.
Detective Webb's voice came through friendly but professional: "Ms. Hartwell, I'm reopening your husband's case. We've got new information suggesting organized crime involvement. I'd like to schedule an interview at your earliest convenience."
Iris set down the coffee mug. "Organized crime?"
"Yes. Daniel had connections to money laundering networks. Appears he was trying to exit the arrangement, and that made him a liability. I'd like to ask you some questions about his associations, financial patterns, anything unusual you might remember."
Iris heard herself agree to an appointment. Hung up the phone. Stood in the kitchen understanding that something fundamental had just shifted.
Organized crime. Daniel had been involved in organized crime.
Her mind began reorganizing everything. Began pulling apart the structure she'd built over weeks of investigation and suspicion.
