It was still dark outside, only a few minutes past three in the morning. Streetlights streaked by in long, pale lines as the car cut through the quiet roads.
The driver gripped the steering wheel tightly, pushing the car as fast as he dared. Thankfully, the streets were nearly empty at this hour.
Simon sat rigidly in the front passenger seat, eyes red and swollen. In the back, Jin Di cradled Elena in his arms, holding her as if loosening his grip even slightly would cause her to vanish. Xie Mei had been left behind. In her state, she would only have caused more chaos.
Elena stirred. Her lashes fluttered, and after a moment, her eyes opened. She looked fragile and unbearably pale, as if all the color had been drained from her.
"Baby!" Jin Di's voice trembled.
"Boss!" Simon turned halfway in his seat, openly sobbing now.
Jin Di kissed her forehead carefully. "How are you feeling?"
