Chapter 2 - Act 2: Viktor Degurechaff

It is currently July 26, 1920 according to the Unified Calendar of the world. Summer is reaching it's end and autumn is arriving.

In a humble chapel in Bern, a few children were playing outside running and chasing each other. This chapel also served as an orphanage and there were gravestones at the back.

Watching the children who were playing outside, a young boy can be seen to be looking at them through the window.

This young boy had dirty blonde hair and dark green eyes. With his pale skin, he looked quite frail and is currently sitting in his wheelchair, further enunciating the delicate nature of his physique, while staring outside.

"Tanya... why are you hiding here?"

The young boy removed his eyes from the view outside and looked sideways as he asked with a tired low voice.

Behind him stood a young girl with blonde hair and grey eyes. She was wearing quite a formal attire not befitting of her age making her appear more mature. Her face bore a frown full of concern and a hint of anger.

"They'll evaluate me for my aptitude for being a mage. I am sure that Being X made me have an enormous amount so I would be forced to go to war and go to the front lines."

As she said that, she clicked her tongue and muttered curses upon curses for that Being X she is talking about. Then she looked at her sickly brother.

"I'd rather stay here with you till we can sustain ourselves and profit off of our future knowledge, Viktor. Then, I would have fulfilled my dream of a carefree life."

Viktor didn't react to her words. He knows his sister, she would do anything to earn her peaceful and carefree life even if that means she'll have to go to war. But due to that she played right in the palm of those so called gods...

He then looked outside at the carefree children playing. The two of them are not like those pure children, never was and never will be. They are reincarnated people that is being taught a 'lesson' by god.

For him, he was reincarnated as a sickly person. At this time, no one knows exactly what his sickness was but he can't muster the strength to walk. He is frail and often got sick. If it is was not for the church he would have died outside as a baby along with Tanya.

"Hiding won't do anything. They are gods, Tanya, whether you want to deny it or not it won't change that fact. They can manipulate fate against us."

Tanya's face darkened at the thought of her being in the palms of Being X. This thought alone made her tremble in silent fury.

"That's not god. That's a devil disguised as a god."

Viktor looked at her and was reminded of how he scorned fate in his past too. For taking her away from him. Such is the cruelty of fate.

"But... from what I learned from the mouth of that God himself, it seems like they don't interfere much with advanced worlds. I don't know the authenticity of this but from what happened in history after the medieval era in our original world... there were no news about major miracles that has ties with religious faith right?"

"Yes. That also led to more materialistic than idealistic people."

As he heard this, he chuckled at how ironic it was. From his world there were many people who believes in reincarnation than in god due to the spread of the Japanese anime and manga along with other multimedia works. This world itself was one of those works and Tanya was the protagonist of that story.

But... she don't have to know that. Viktor told her that he was from the same world as her, which was right in some aspects as his and her world were parallels with the same history and media works. With the difference of there not being a light novel called, "The Diary of a War Orphan" from what he gathered from her.

He couldn't help but reminisce about that time when they first told each other's secrets of their past life two years ago.

// Little Tanya looked at her unnaturally smart brother and was in deep thought. After a while, she decided to confront him.

"Are you a reincarnated person?"

"Yes, sister. Just like you."

It was just as she expected. But she was greatly shocked at his second sentence. How did he know?

"I knew since you act so mature and the question you just asked made me assume so."

"I see. That's a logical conclusion even I can reach when asked the same question," Tanya nodded. //

After that exchange between them and when Tanya learned that he has also met and been cursed by Being X, the two of them lived harmoniously with a common foe in mind.

"Tanya, dear. So you're here with your brother. Let's go get you examined now."

Viktor watched as his sister was taken out of his room by one of the nuns. One of them then stayed in the room and talked to him. The nun looked at him with worried eyes before sighing and talking.

"As for you Viktor... we asked the military official and informed them about your condition. They will still examine you but they said that you won't have to go and won't be conscripted."

As soon as she said that, the nun left. Viktor redirected his eyes back to the scenery outside the window. He knows his condition more than anyone. But this won't prevent him from protecting his family and shattering preconceptions to find his loved one across worlds.

"Even those so called gods can't prevent me from protecting my current family and finding her. Nor will this mere sickly body of mine."

He swore in his heart ever since that day. That if he had the chance, he will show his loved ones... a true peaceful place even if it only lasts for their lifetimes.

|| Extra Story: Discussion of Divinity ||

"It has been getting harder and harder to get faith from advanced worlds these days. Were we wrong in our approach?"

In a place far away from the comprehension of the human mind, a handful of beings with unprecedented holy and sacred aura can be seen to be discussing something.

They are some of the various gods from across cultures in different worlds.

Someone that looked like Shiva, with six eyes and six arms, shook his head and told them what he thought.

"Indeed. But we can't interfere or they will be brought back to being nothing but sheep, never achieving divinity."

One of them sighed as he heard his words. Shiva looked at him with a questioning look and this god sighed yet again and explained.

"I saw a human who can achieve divinity without our intervention nor the help of mana. If he had a few more years to live then you all would have taken notice of him."

Yes, the one who spoke was the one whom Tanya called as "Being X".

They were shocked. It has been hundreds of thousands of years since the last human ascended to godhood and it was this god who spoke. But he never achieved divinity on his own, he had the help of an older god.

"Where is he now? Wasn't he supposed to become an angel in heaven now?"

One of the seraphims then asked him. But as soon as she asked this, his faced turned sour and he told them why he's not here.

"He lacks faith. I sent him to live another life to learn faith and love."
